Saturday 16th January 2008 W-P report: Venue Y Traeth

CPD Porthmadog - Gareth Owen 74, Gareth Parry 85
Aberystwyth Town 6 - Geoff Kellaway 17, 45, 87, Luke Sherbon 27, 40, Gareth Owen og 50

On a bright sunny day Aber travelled to Porthmadog and this reporter was making his first appearance at Y Traeth. Alas due to train delays and a long wait at Dovey Junction did not arrive at the ground until 3:00.

Back in Porth Aber were without the suspended captain Bari Morgan and Stuart Roberts. Brian had a selection headache as the Reserves faced an important league cup encounter against Bow Street. Assistant manager Martyn Griffths named himself as a 3rd sub.

On the pitch Andy Evans had the first attempt on the first minute when he headed against the crossbar while Porthmadogs Rhys Roberts powered a shot which was parried away by Dave Jones.

Aber deservedly drew first blood after 7 minutes from a Geoff Kellaway burst down the right driving his shot past Richard Harvey.

12 minutes later it was Luke Sherbon's turn to break free to fire a powerful shot past the helpless keeper who was in a torrid afternoon . Luke Sherbon had a cracking shot outside the box disallowed for reasons only known to the officials. Kellaway added the 4th right on half time after the defence were not for the first time caught completely stranded.

Half time - The Porth players were sent out 5 mins into the break to reflect on their shambolic performance and by the looks of the majority they didnt appear to be bothered and certainly did not look like they would rectify things.

2nd half got underway and the Porth Horror show continued, who knows what Gareth Owen was thinking when he made a hash of a simple looking back pass which went straight past keeper Richard Harvey to make it 5-0 Aber. a 2nd similar back pass was made just a few mins later but fortunately for them it went just the wrong side of the post

The game by this point had turned into nothing more as a training session and Aber began to sit back and this allowed Port more of the possession and play was more towards the Aber goal. 74th minute something for the home side to cheer about at last when Gareth Owen headed in at the right end of the net. 83rd minute a penalty was awarded to Porth following a scramble in the box. Dave Jones repeated his exact same penalty save as Wednesday to deny Paul Roberts. Some sloppy defending and conceding yet another goal from a set piece saw Gareth Parry make it 5-2. Now for the landmark moment as Martyn Griffths came on to replace Luke Sherbon for the duration of the game and did alright :)

Geoff claimed a deserved hattrick on 87 minutes when he beat the defence yet again and Richard Harvey in the Port goal managed to drop the ball and it rolled back into the net to finish the game 6-2 and yet the margin of victory could have been so much bigger still.

Aber will go into the Connahs Quay game full of confidence following the performance and result as for the visitors well......... unless they defend alot better and play with some spirit and heart they will be have to rely on results or technicalities elsewhere to prevent them falling into the Cymru Alliance.
