Penybont vs Aberystwyth Town
JD Cymru Premier Friday 23rd September 7.45pm KO It’s a quick return to South Wales for ATFC tomorrow night, as the Seasiders travel to Bridgend to face Penybont, three days after Tuesday night’s thrilling Nathaniel MG Cup tie at Cardiff Met. Goals from Charley Edge and Alex Darlington had put Aber in pole position and thrilled the sizeable away following, but the Capital club struck back through Matt Chubb and Sam Jones, and then scored all five of their penalties to progress to the next round. Tomorrow night’s hosts, Penybont, also exited the competition on Tuesday night as they went down 2-1 at home to JD Cymru South outfit Ammanford AFC. They have started their league campaign strongly however and sit in joint second place in the JD Cymru Premier league table with 4 wins and 12 points from their opening 6 games. Their most recent league match saw them triumph 3-2 at Newtown on Saturday evening. Summer arrivals at the SDM Glass Stadium include experienced former Football League defender Mark Little, ex-Barry Town shot stopper Kelland Absalom and midfielder Keyon Reffell who joined from Merthyr Tydfil. There are a number of familiar faces in the Bont ranks as well, none more so than Manager Rhys Griffiths, who spent the 2015/16 at Park Avenue (scoring 7 goals in 21 appearances). He is joined by former ATFC shot stopper Alex Pennock, who swapped Ceredigion for Bridgend in the summer and by Kane Owen & Kostya Georgievsky, who both had brief spells at Park Avenue back in 2016. The SDM Glass Stadium can be found on Llangewydd Road, Bridgend and the postcode for your sat-nav is CF31 4JU. Tickets are priced at £7 for Adults, £5 for Concessions and £2 for u16s. Its time for another Friday night on the road with ATFC…! Aberystwyth Town Women have been honoured by the FAW for their work in the area – and now hope to go even further in the national awards. In Wednesday evening’s event, Aber picked up the Central Wales Equality, Diversity and Inclusion prize for their grassroots girls’ camps and addition of a girls’ development centre – with many of their first-team players coaching and giving the girls role models to look up to. They will now move forward to the nationwide final. “We’re really happy to get this award,” said camp coach and first-team player Lucie Gwilt. “The camps have been a massive success this year. We had 100 at our last camp, and we’ve been applying for grants so we can make as many of them as possible free. “It’s giving so much to girls in the area. We’ve had so many beginners and we hope some of them will be rising stars at Aberystwyth Town in the years to come.” by carrie dunn
Nathaniel MG Cup Third Round
Tuesday 20th September Cardiff Met 2 Aberystwyth Town 2 (Met win 5-3 on pens) Aber Town and Cardiff Met played out a thrilling Cup Tie at Cyncoed Campus last night in front of a large, freshers week boosted crowd, with Met prevailing on penalties to leave the visitors gutted. Goals from Charley Edge (27 mins) and Alex Darlington (34 mins) had put the visitors in pole position and thrilled the sizeable away following, but the Capital club struck back through Matt Chubb (45+2) and Sam Jones (78 mins), and then scored all five of their penalties to progress to the next round. The Black and Greens came into the game in good spirits following a morale boosting win at home to Connah’s Quay last Friday, and started the game positively. Harry Arnison intercepted but aimed his shot straight at Max Manson in the home goal, then Iwan Lewis sent an attempt wide. Lewis Webb in Aber’s goal made a point blank save, but then Sam Litchfield saw a header saved, before Niall Flint went on a great run down the right and crossed only for Edge to be denied by keeper and defenders. Lewis Rees sent in a grass tickler for Webb to gather, then back at the other end Jack Thorn headed over from a corner, before Darlington was expertly picked out down the left, and he crossed for Edge to tap in a well deserved opener. Rees had another shot saved before crossing for Chris Baker to head over – but then Darlington gathered the ball from fully 30 yards out, spotted Manson off his line and lobbed him sumptuously to double the lead and bring delirium to the away supporters. Flint hit the post from an offside position and Aber looked solid, with Litchfield commanding at the back, but then in injury time Rees took a free kick from out on the right which dropped perfectly for Chubb to nick a crucial goal and spark home hopes of a revival. This cup tie continued on its fascinating trajectory after the break: Webb parried a near post header from Baker, Emlyn Lewis headed wide for Met, then a neat Aber move almost ended in glory for the fleet footed Sam Phillips, but Alaric Jones blocked his attempt. Harri Horwood made a swashbuckling run all the way from right back to the edge of the area before being blocked, and with sub John Owen putting himself about, the next goal was vital. Edge curled an attemot over the bar for Aber, and Alaric Jones sent a header in which was saved by Webb, but then with seventeen to go Cymru Prem top scorer Sam Jones gathered the ball on the right, cut inside and sent a bullet shot into the far corner for a crucial equaliser. Both sides defended stoutly: Rees headed over for Met, Baker volleyed wide and an Edge volley from distance was fumbled, then gathered by Manson, and the game ended in an honourable stalemate and a great watch for a decent crowd. The match then went straight to a penalty shoot out. Harry Owen, Jones, Rees, Chubb and Lewis converted Met’s attempts while Aber’s Phillips had a penalty saved, meaning that Thorn, Edge and Flint’s goals were academic. From an Aber Town perspective this was a disappointing conclusion to an engrossing game, but there is no doubt that their level of performance over the past two match has significantly improved. This was attested to by the fulsome applause they received at the end of the game from the Black and Green Tifosi, and Manager Anthony Williams celebrated his birthday with a performance to build on. Good luck to Cardiff Met in the next round: Aber move on to a league match at Penybont on Friday night. Reassemble Green Army!! Cardiff Metropolitan University vs Aberystwyth Town
Tuesday 20th September Nathaniel MG Cup (Round 3) 7.45pm KO ATFC travel south to the capital tonight, for what is fast becoming one of the club’s most played fixtures. Aber Manager Anthony Williams only left the students in the summer, but this will be the third time he has faced his former team in only 4 months since his appointment at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue. So far, it is one win each, with Aber triumphing 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at Park Avenue, before Met won 4-0 on their return visit in the league. The teams were familiar foes last season as well, facing each other no less than 6 times, with Met victorious on 4 occasions, Aber winning one and the other resulting in a draw. Met reached the 3rd round by defeating Newtown 2-1 at Cyncoed Campus back on the 7th August, thanks to goals from Eliot Evans and Harry Owen. The previous evening, ATFC had beaten Llanidloes Town by the same scoreline with Phil Perry & Steff Davies on target at Park Avenue. The teams come into this fixture having had contrasting results over the weekend. ATFC recorded an impressive victory over much-fancied Connahs Quay Nomads, whilst Met were on the wrong end of a dominant performance by The New Saints, who hit the students for 7 at Cyncoed. Despite Saturday’s result, Met have made a strong start to the season and currently sit in 4th place in the Cymru Premier, with 4 wins from Ryan Jenkins first 6 games as Manager, since he took over from former Seasider Christian Edwards in the summer. Jenkins squad remains largely the same as the one he inherited from Edwards, with familiar names such as Kyle McCarthy, Emlyn Lewis and former ATFC loanee Tom Price all still with the club. Club stalwart Eliot Evans remains a key player on the pitch, but his influence now stretches to the dugout also following his appointment as Player / Coach. Cyncoed Campus can be found on Cyncoed Road, Cardiff and the postcode is CF23 6XD. Parking is available on campus in the form of a Pay & Display car park. Tickets are priced at £7 for Adults, £4 for Concessions & £3 for Students (£2 for Students of Cardiff Met Uni). Another cup tie under the lights awaits! ADRAN PREMIER: MATCHDAY 2 |
