Aberystwyth Town Women have picked up £1,000 from Nationwide Building Society after impressing judges in a UK-wide competition built around mutual respect within the grassroots game. Britain’s biggest building society have partnered with Football Associations across the UK in landmark three-year deals to help foster positivity and respect across grassroots football. The simple aim is to create a society that's built on mutual respect. In August Nationwide committed to donating £50,000 to their newly formed Mutual Respect Grants fund to help support grassroots football. Clubs and teams could apply for one of the 50 grants by explaining why respect is important to their club to be in the chance with being awarded £1,000. There were more than 300 applications from across the UK, with Aberystwyth Town Women who train at Park Avenue Stadium in Aberystwyth chosen as one of the lucky deserving winners. In their application they highlighted the work they have done in increasing participation opportunities for women and girls in the Ceredigion area, through the introduction of a Girls' Development Centre, an U19 youth team, a Senior Development side as well as holding regular grassroots Girls' Camps in school holidays. Lucie Gwilt, club volunteer and first team player, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be receiving this grant in reward for our hard work this past year. Women and girls’ participation in football is booming right now and we are delighted to be a small part of it. We will be using the money to further invest in our Girls' Centre and Camps by purchasing new equipment to account for our rise in attendance numbers.” Emily Barker, Brand Partnerships Manager at Nationwide Building Society, said: “Mutual respect is something that we value at the core of Nationwide in everything we do, so to be able to give these grants to the clubs that need them the most and those that themselves have demonstrated respect on and off the pitch is really exciting. We are looking forward to seeing how grassroots clubs put the money to use and the difference it makes.” CARRIE DUNNABER TOWN WOMEN HEAD WRITER Caernarfon Town vs Aberystwyth Town
JD Cymru Premier Friday 21st October 7.45pm KO Aber Town hit the road again tomorrow night with The Oval, Caernarfon the venue for the Seasiders latest Cymru Premier outing. Sprits will be high in the Black & Green ranks, with progression in the Welsh Cup two weeks ago followed by last Friday’s third successive home win, which came against Haverfordwest County in front of the Sgorio cameras and saw Anthony Williams’ men rise to 8th in the Cymru Premier table. Tomorrow nights hosts, Caernarfon Town, currently sit three places and three points ahead of Aber, having played one game less. They have taken 5 wins from their opening 9 games, losing the remaining 4. Although both teams are yet to draw a league game this season, this fixture has ended in a stalemate in the previous two seasons. Last season, the points were shared in an entertaining 3-3 draw just before Christmas, whilst in 2020/21 a last minute Jamie Veale free-kick levelled matters at 2-2 on the day Cymru Premier football returned after a 3-month hiatus due to the Covid-19 winter lockdown. There are a couple of familiar faces in the Caernarfon squad this season. Ben Wynne, who is currently the hosts top goal scorer this season with 4 goals, spent the latter half of last season at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue before moving north in the summer, whilst Darren Thomas signed for Aber from Caernarfon back in 2015 during Ian Hughes’ tenure and had a six month spell in Black & Green before returning to The Oval, where he continues to hit the net on a regular basis, having netted 3 times already this season. The Oval can be found on Marcus Street, Caernarfon and the postcode for your sat-nav is LL55 2HT. Its time for another Friday night on the road with ATFC! ADRAN PREMIER |
