Dafabet Welsh Premier League
Saturday 20th February (ko 2.30pm) Haverfordwest County v Aberystwyth Town After two 1-0 wins in a row Aberystwyth Town aim to extend their love affair with the Dafabet Welsh Premier League Play Off Conference with a positive result away at Conygar Bridge Meadow, Haverfordwest on Saturday afternoon, knowing that a win would bring them three consecutive wins for the first time this season. Victories over Port Talbot Town and Rhyl were attained mostly through defensive solidity, hard graft and a couple of moments of inspiration which have given the Black and Greens belief that a seventh placed finish is still a realistic aspiration for Interim Manager Wyn Thomas and his players. However overconfidence will not be an issue on Saturday, as the Pembrokeshire Bluebirds have already beaten Aber three times out of four this season, Town's one win coming on Boxing Day in Haverfordwest, when Jack Rimmer's extravagant cross turned into a match winner. Rimmer himself is likely to be unavailable for selection this weekend, having been selected for Wales' Semi Pro Under 18s squad, and Luke Sherbon is still undoing treatment for a groin strain. With a best run of the season beckoning Aber's Coach will be full of positivity on Saturday and it leaves Park Avenue at 11.30am. A return trip to Haverfordwest will cost a mere £10 for Adults and £5 Concessions. Come along and bring your Good Vibes with you! Dafabet Welsh Premier League
Friday 12th February Rhyl 0 Aberystwyth Town 1 Craig Williams’ deft lob in first half injury time won this evening’s game at Rhyl for Aberystwyth Town, earning Interim Manager Wyn Thomas a second consecutive victory in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League Play Off Conference, and sending Aber past the thirty point mark for the season. On a clear but cold evening the hosts started slightly the stronger, with Chay Dysart heading wide before John Owen tested Mike Lewis’ handiwork. However after the first ten minutes Aber found their form and went on to take the initiative through the remainder of the first half with a confident performance. Williams played in Geoff Kellaway who saw his shot blocked, Williams and Rhys Griffiths also had efforts on goal and then Williams set up a chanced with a great run down the left, but Griffiths fired just over. Zac Corbett and Corey Williams sent tame efforts off target for Rhyl, and then Levi Mackin burst through the middle and sent in a piledriver which was kept out by a great right handed stop from Lewis. Rhyl however were looking the shakier at the back and Stuart Jones almost scored with a header from a Williams free kick, but home keeper Terry McCormick touched the ball to safety. Then in the second minute of injury time came the best moment of the game, as the returning Chris Venables showed superb desire to win the ball in his own half before unleashing a peach of a diag towards Williams loitering on the right wing. Spotting McCormick off his line and rushing towards the ball Aber’s super winger got there first and lofted the ball past the despairing keeper, to fall beautifully into the net for a crucial strike on a night low on clear cut chances. The visitors started the second half in good spirits, and with Rhyl gifting them the ball, Aber were soon creating chances again. The imperious Venables picked Kellaway out down the right wing, but his low shot was parried by McCormick before Jonathan Evans fired over from the edge of the box. Dysart set up Connor Bell, who hit the side netting for Rhyl, but then Aber underlined themselves as the more dangerous attacking side, as Evans set up Kellaway again down the right, but his low effort fizzed just past the post. Evans then played in another great ball, but McCormick cleared the danger just before Griffiths could nip in. After a good hour of dominance from the Black and Greens Rhyl came back once again towards the end of the game, and forced a number of corners and free kicks in dangerous areas: however Town’s back four of Antonio Corbisiero, Jones, Lee Surman and Cledan Davies defended stoutly, with excellent support from their other six colleagues, and prevented too many clear cut chances, the best of which fell to Rhyl sub Josh Gordon who brought a save from a Mike Lewis happy to gather the ball at the second attempt. Aber were still coming though: Venables headed yet another quality Williams free kick at McCormick and then saw a late attempt trickle just past the post, and Aber held out through four minutes of injury time to see the job through. The Black and Greens will be extremely pleased to have gained three hard earned points in their first away game of 2016, and this result coming after another tough win at Park Avenue two weeks ago gives Wyn Thomas some positive momentum to work on as Aber turn their minds to another away game at Conygar Bridge Meadow, Haverfordwest next Saturday (ko 2.30pm). Seventh place, and a UEFA Europa League Play Off spot, currently only a single goal away, is still very much within Aber’s grasp. With your support the Boys Can Do It! Dafabet Welsh Premier Friday 12th February (ko 7.45pm) Rhyl v Aberystwyth Town Aberystwyth Town return to Dafabet Welsh Premier League action on Friday night in high spirits following a hard earned victory over Port Talbot in difficult conditions twelve days ago. Town travel to North Wales to take on Rhyl at their Belle Vue ground, and will be looking to build on the positive momentum gained over the past two weeks. Interim Manager Wyn Thomas told Aber Town's Youtube Channel that he and the players would be working hard to build on the win, and hopefully the fruits of that labour will be apparent on Friday night. The good news for Thomas is that twice WPL Player of the Season Chris Venables is back in contention for a starting place having served his one match suspension last time round. Thomas told atfc.org.uk this evening: "The lads trained well on Tuesday night, and everyone now knows their job. We have no injury concerns, everyone is fit and we're going up there to get a result. We can't wait for Friday!" Will Aber provide their supporters with another Fab Friday? There's only one way to find out! The Coach leaves Park Avenue at 3.30pm and a return trip will cost a mere £10 for Adults and £5 Concessions. Aberystwyth Town FC were delighted to host Show Racism The Red Card this week, who put on an Educational Event in the John Charles Lounge on Tuesday with Students from Ysgol Plascrug. The following report comes courtesy of their website here. Aberystwyth Town FC Club Event, February 9th 2016 We held our educational club event with Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town FC. Young people from Plascrug CP school attended the Park Avenue stadium to take part in our educational club event with Aberystwyth Town FC for the day. Former professional player Steve Jenkins delivered a workshop in the morning to the young people educating them on the topic of racism using interactive activities and discussions. Pupils prior to attending the ground at school were set a task to prepare for the afternoons anti-racism “press conference”. Pupils had to create a newspaper name and were tasked with researching racism in sport and society. Pupils also were required to read newspapers and online blogs to explore how they are designed and written. From the information they had learnt they had to prepare questions for the press conference at the event to help produce their article for their newspaper after the event. In the afternoon pupils watched our educational DVD which gave them a last opportunity to obtain further knowledge on the topic before the question and answer session in our “media / press conference event.” Aberystwyth Town FC players Geoff Kellaway and Stephanie Land attended the event to take part in the press conference joined by Steve Jenkins. Pupils now in the role of newspaper journalists were selected to ask questions, introduce themselves and the newspaper they “worked” for followed by their question. The journalists posed some really challenging questions for the players and had clearly researched and planned some well thought out questions. The best asked question won a match tickets and a SRtRC goodie bag. When the pupils return to school they will use all the information they had learnt at the event along with the responses from the players to write and design their article. We would like to thank the school for attending the event and the club for working in partnership to host the event and providing the prizes for the pupils. Everyone at Aberystwyth Town FC congratulates young prodigy Jack Rimmer for his selection for the Wales Under 18s Academy Squad for two matches against Ireland U18. The two matches are likely to take place in the Republic between Saturday the 20th of February and Wednesday the 24th of February 2016, and we await confirmation of the exact details. 16 year old Jack has been Aber Town Under 19s stand out performer to date this season and has also made three starts and seven sub appearances for the Black and Greens First Team, scoring a memorable winner at Haverfordwest County on Boxing Day. He also spent a week on trial at Leicester City in the Autumn, scoring in an Academy fixture. Da iawn ti Jack - we look forward to adding another International Cap portrait to the wall of the John Charles Lounge before too long! February is the international campaign month of ‘Football v Homophobia’ (FvH) and Aberystwyth Town are supporting the initiative. FvH is a campaign uniting fans, players, communities, grassroots teams, professional clubs and the Football Authorities in opposing homophobia and prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in football. Year round, FvH enables people to take action against prejudice and discrimination based on sexuality or gender identity in football, and to celebrate and welcome diversity in the game. This culminates in an international show of support in February to raise awareness of the issue and to join together in making a visible stand against prejudice and for inclusion. The campaign was launched in 2010 and manages to generate global attention. In the UK there has been a massive show of support and many professional clubs take action every year. Club Chairman Tony Bates said: "Homophobia has no place in our Football Club so Aber Town are pleased to be supporting the campaign again this season." Homophobia and LGBT discrimination has long been an issue in football. In 1990 the first professional football player in the UK to come out as gay, Justin Fashanu, had an intense struggle with his sexuality and how it was received in the game. More recently we have seen Robbie Rogers come out. Robbie retired briefly when he made the announcement about his sexuality. But now, following massive support from players and fans alike, he plays in the US for LA Galaxy. In 2014 former Premier League player Thomas Hitzlsperger also came out as gay. Both of these players have talked about the challenge of being gay and working as professional footballers, and the impact that anti-gay jokes and language can have on confidence and self-esteem. Casey Stoney, former England Women’s Captain has also spoken out about her sexuality. Whilst she felt accepted within football circles, she has also spoken of her fears of stereotypes and of being judged by the ‘outside world’ for being gay. More than twenty years after our first professional player came out, football is starting to show progress on the issue of homophobia in the game. However we still have some way to go. Even heterosexual players and supporters can suffer homophobic abuse, when fans and teammates think its ok to call someone ‘gay’ as a term of abuse or make jokes about someone’s sexuality because they don’t fit in with the team or simply because they’re not having a very good game. Change always starts with education and Aberystwyth Town recognises it has a role to play in leading the way on raising awareness of homophobia and LGBT discrimination within the club and its community. Aberystwyth Town FC believes in a game where LGBT people can be seen and heard, and appreciated for their contribution to the football family. Therefore we will work to create a safe and inclusive football environment for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We want our supporters to help us achieve this. Aberystwyth Town Ladies' home Welsh Premier Womens League game at home to PILCS this Sunday (ko 2pm) has been designated a game in support of the Football v Homophobia campaign. This is an opportunity for our supporters to also get behind the campaign and show everyone that Aberystwyth Town has no place for hate or bigotry.
