Dafabet Welsh Premier League Friday 25th September (Kick off 7.45pm) Bangor City v Aberystwyth Town The Dafabet Welsh Premier League Action never stops at Aberystwyth Town and a mere 20 hours on from the final whistle of the Black and Greens epic encounter with Bala last night, thoughts are already turning to Friday night's game away to Bangor City at the Bangor University Stadium (ko 7.45pm). A draw last night was scant reward for a match which Aber dominated for long periods, nevertheless the point gained did take them back into the Top Six, which is now identical in make up to last season's Elite. Friday night's game pits Town against one of the three sides they share the 7 point tally with, so a positive result would give Ian Hughes' men some breathing space. Bangor are fresh from their first home win of the season, a 2-1 win over Gap Connah's Quay, though their striker Porya Ahmadi was sent off in that game and will miss Friday's encounter. They nevertheless have a good record recently against the Seasiders and have not lost to Aber in three years. Aber Manager Ian Hughes told atfc.org.uk this afternoon: "It's been a good week so far, winning comprehensively away at Carmarthen then putting in probably the best display of the season against leave leaders Bala. We should have won the game with the amount of chances we created. Performances have been improving since the start of the season and if we can pick up some more points on Friday it will leave us in a good position. The league is very tight at the moment and we know we will have to be on our game for 90 minutes on Friday. We look a much more solid unit and will have to be solid once again come the weekend. Thank you to the supporters on Tuesday, I really thought we were going to score the winner and the crowd kept pushing us on. We are getting stronger and with Rhys Griffiths nearing full match fitness it give us a full squad to chose from. We are in the middle of 7 games in 21 days which is a big ask for any team, so we will have to call on all of our squad in the coming weeks." The Coach leaves Park Avenue at 3.45pm and a Twilight Trip to Bangor will cost you a mere £10, or £5 for Students. Entertainment is Guaranteed! Aberystwyth played fantastically to earn a draw against the league leaders, Bala, and perhaps were unlucky not to get more from the game. The visitors started strongly, showing why they’re top of the table and came close on several occasions but the defence that played so well last week held out. Aberystwyth began to work their way back into the game, Chris Venables heading inches wide of the upright from a well worked cross. Despite the growing balance in the game, it was Bala who took the lead on 13 minutes. A ball over the top evaded Stuart Jones and fell to Lakesiders forward Lee Hunt who rifled it under Mike Lewis in the Aber goal. Aber fought back, keeping possession well but were unable to unlock the Bala defence, a few cross-field diagonal balls not reaching their desired targets. Chances did come though and it was midfield maestro Luke Sherbon who tested Bala ‘keeper Ashley Morris’ with a 20 yard drive which proved too hot to handle but was gratefully gathered by the keeper on the rebound. Jamie Reed also created a handful of chances as Geoff Kellaway made inroads down the wing. The noise level grew as the half progressed as the Black and Greens looked ever more dangerous and came agonisingly close to levelling the score through Stuart Jones from a corner in the dying minutes of the first period, but Ashley Morris pulled off a wonder save to keep Bala ahead. A change of tactics saw pacy Aber winger, Geoff Kellaway get more opportunities to run at the defence and Aber began to grow in confidence as Kellaway persistently troubled the visiting back four. The chances came in abundance but still they couldn’t find that all important goal. Darren Thomas had a pop from the edge of the box but it flew wide and then several chances were blocked away within the box. The equalizer finally came in the 78th minute as substitute Rhys Griffiths fired home to send the large home attendance, boosted by 75 Freshers, into raptures. A winner was on the cards for Aber and they knocked on the door time and time again but a strong performance from Morris in the Bala goal kept the score level. A very satisfying result and a performance that is sure to serve as a good advert for the league to new students. This result and results elsewhere mean Aberystwyth remain in the Top 6 as they look to emulate last season’s success. Dafabet Welsh Premier League Tuesday 22nd September (ko 7.45pm) Aberystwyth Town v Bala Town Aberystwyth Town will be looking for a Freshers Week boost on Tuesday evening as they prepare to host League Leaders Bala Town off the back of a terrific 3-0 win in Carmarthen last Friday night. The hosts' confidence will be high after that performance, which showcased a strong defensive foundation and a devastating attacking prowess to defeat a side which had not lost at home all season. For the first time in 2015/6 Manager Ian Hughes had a full squad to choose from, and Jamie Reed, Darren Thomas and Chris Venables all found the back of the net in the last twenty minutes of Friday's match. Rhys Griffiths' appearance as a late substitute was another big boost for the Seasiders, who are the League's top scorers on eleven goals Club Marketing Officers Jed Woodcock and Tomos Ings will be attending the University Freshers Fair on Tuesday to recruit new Supporters and the Black and Greens hope and anticipate that a large number of Freshers will be in attendance to cheer Town on to another famous result. Bala Town for their part have enjoyed an excellent start to the season, beating Airbus, Connah's Quay and Bangor at home and drawing away with Port Talbot and Carmarthen Town. They currently lead the table having finished runners up last season, though almost exactly a year ago they visited Park Avenue for a WPL League game and were routed by the Black and Greens by four goals to nil. If Town can replicate the defensive tenacity and bite shown last Friday then a positive result is on the cards, and a Big Roar from the Dias Stand will show Aber the way. Admission will cost £6 for Adults, £4 Concessions and £1 for Children, and Kick off is at 7.45pm. The Club of course extends a very warm welcome to all Freshers - a visit to Park Avenue is a must for anyone wanting to get a feel for a new and wonderful world by the sea! Aber produced the complete performance on Friday night, writes Club Media Assistant Matthew Wallace. Three goals, three different scorers and more importantly a clean sheet, a feat that has eluded Town since December 2014, made it a fantastic evening for all involved at the club. “The clean sheet is the important thing tonight. Not keeping a clean sheet in so long, the players were aware of that and it had been something that was on their minds. It’s something that we have worked on in training with Wyn Thomas. He deserves praise for that,” boss Ian Hughes told atfc.org.uk. Goals from Jamie Reed, Darren Thomas and Chris Venables ensured a rather one sided scoreline despite the game being a close one until the 70th minute. But despite the game being close, Carmarthen were frustrated by a superb rear guard performance from the Aber defence. “The team as a whole deserve great credit. Tonight we stopped people taking shots at our goalkeeper and we defended very well as a unit. Except for a couple of crosses and a header over the bar, I don’t remember Mike [Lewis] having much to do”. Aber will be looking to build on the momentum generated from this game as they host Bala Town on Tuesday night in front of a new wave of supporters as the game incorporates the University’s Freshers Week. “It’s only one win. We’ve got a big game against Bala on Tuesday and hopefully we can get the supporters down in force because their support does make a big difference to the side.” Watch Matthew Wallace's post match interviews with Manager Ian Hughes and Mike Lewis on Aber Town's Youtube Channel here. Aberystwyth Town's home match at home to League Leaders Bala Town takes place at Park Avenue on Tuesday evening with a 7.45pm Kick Off. Admission will cost £6 for Adults, £4 Concessions and £1 for Children. Sunday 20th September Welsh Womens Premier League Aberystwyth Town 1 Rhyl & Prestatyn Town 2 A ninth minute goal from Aberystwyth's Lowri Morgan could not prevent the Welsh Premier side going down 2-1 to Rhyl and Prestatyn. A close and physical match saw the game race from end to end and in the 16th minute Rhyl's and Prestatyn's Ashley Mills scored a cracking volley over the head of home keeper Chelsea Maiklem to equalise. The second half saw chances for Ffiona Evans and Amy Jenkins for the home side and Laura Williams and Rachel Lloyd for the visitors, but a 76th winner from Rebecca Bannister that saw the visitors take the spoils back home. Aberystwyth Town travel to PILCS and Rhyl and Prestatyn host Wrexham on Sunday 27th September in round three of the Premier competition (ko 2pm). Report and photo courtesy of Chris Howells |
