Friday 17th November Aberystwyth Town 1 Bala Town 2 In front of a bumper crowd of 643 at Park Avenue on Friday evening, Aberystwyth Town fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bala Town, as a brace from Mike Hayes was enough to send the lakesiders home with all three points in an entertaining game. Hayes netted his first goal on 52 minutes before doubling the visitors’ lead on 80 minutes. Chris Mullock had kept Town in the game with an astonishing penalty save from Chris Venables, and although a Les Davies own goal pulled Aber back into it in the 86th minute the home side were unable to find the equaliser in the dying seconds. The visitors started the game strongest, as Chris Venables saw an early goal bound header blocked by Aber’s Matthew Jones before Mike Hayes fired a shot just over the bar. On 14 minutes, Aber created a good opportunity themselves as John Owen back-heeled a lovely ball into the path of Declan Walker, who lobbed the ball just over goalkeeper Ashley Morris’ crossbar. Soon after, Bala went even closer as Chris Mullock made an incredible fingertip save from Chris Venables’ header before smothering the follow up inside the penalty area. The visitors continued to press, but Aber also began to find some joy in attack as Ryan Wade sent an inviting cross into the penalty area, which was cleared for a corner kick by Stuart Jones. From the resulting corner Wade saw his goal bound effort cleared off the line as Bala counted themselves fortunate not to be behind. As half-time approached, the visitors threatened once more as Les Davies rattled the crossbar with a header, before Hayes again sent a left footed drive just over, but it was to remain goalless at the break. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Bala looking the more likely side to open the scoring. On 49 minutes, Aber goalie Mullock was again called into action as first he saved Jordan Evans’ low strike before producing a fantastic full-stretch save to deny Evans just seconds later. However, on 52 minutes the visitors finally broke the deadlock as Evans played in Hayes, who produced a clinical left footed finish to make it 1-0. Just sixty seconds later Aber were almost instantly level as full back Declan Walker fired an outrageous 30-yard effort against the crossbar. Soon after, Town hit the woodwork yet again as the ball fell to captain Jonny Spittle, who turned and volleyed his shot against the outside of the post. The game began to open up as Aber committed more men forwards, with Craig Hobson replacing the industrious Luke Borrelli on 65 minutes to add physical presence up front. As the hosts continued to push for the equaliser, they were caught out on the counter attack as Mike Hayes surged into the penalty area and was brought down, leaving referee Dean John no option but to award a penalty kick. Bala talisman Chris Venables stepped up to take the spot kick, and as he fired the ball towards the top right corner, goalkeeper Chris Mullock dived at full stretch to tip the ball over the crossbar with a simply astounding save. This gave Aber some added hope, but on 80 minutes those hopes were soon dashed as Hayes latched on to a loose ball in the penalty area and fired past the unlucky Mullock to make it 2-0. Town continued to battle and were soon back in the game as Les Davies back headed an Ashley Young throw-in on 84 minutes into his own net to make it 2-1 and hand the hosts a lifeline. Suddenly the visitors were camped in their own half as Aber applied huge pressure on their back line. Ryan Wade fired a shot wide on 86 minutes before sending a header straight at Bala ‘keeper Ashley Morris in the dying seconds, but it wasn’t to be as the referee blew the full-time whistle. A frustrating night for Nev Powell’s men, who will count themselves unlucky not to have taken a point from the game after twice hitting the woodwork. It must also be said that goalkeeper Chris Mullock kept Aber in the game on more than one occasion with some magnificent saves, in what was a thoroughly entertaining affair at Park Avenue. Town must now look to bounce back with another Friday night game at home to Newtown in the JD Welsh Premier League next week. JD Welsh Premier League Friday 17th November (8p.m Kick Off) Aberystwyth Town v Bala Town Aberystwyth Town will look to return to winning ways on Friday night as they welcome Bala Town to Park Avenue in the JD Welsh Premier League. After a narrow 3-2 defeat away at Bangor City last time out, Town will be pleased to be back in front of their home supporters for what is the first of three consecutive home games for Neville Powell’s side. Aber will be looking to continue to build on their improving home form after a well-earned 1-0 win over Cefn Druids in their last JD Welsh Premier League outing at Park Avenue. Manager Nev Powell spoke of his disappointment after Town’s defeat to Bangor 8 days ago, but urged the players and supporters alike to remain positive, stating “You can see the direction that we’re trying to go with this team now and the lads will get their heads up and work hard in training, and there’s no reason we can’t get another unbeaten run going again now because we’ve got a good squad of players”. Indeed, Aber’s manager will be looking for continued togetherness and consistency within his squad as they enter a crucial part of the season, with three games in three weeks coming up at Park Avenue. After facing Bala on Friday night, Town will host Mid-Wales rivals Newtown on November 24th before facing Bala yet again in the JD Welsh Cup on December 2nd. With three massive games on the horizon, Aber’s players and management will be looking for the support of a vocal Park Avenue crowd to spur them on to three big results. Bala Town travel to Park Avenue on Friday evening on the back of a five game unbeaten run, having picked up four victories and most recently a 1-1 draw at home to Connah’s Quay. In the reverse fixture earlier in the season, the game ended in a 1-1 draw as Jonny Spittle equalised on the stroke of half time after Nathan Burke had given the lakesiders the lead. Colin Caton’s squad features a number of former Black and Greens including Will Bell, Stuart Jones and former talisman Chris Venables. In what promises to be another exciting Friday night at Park Avenue, be sure to come down and support the boys towards another good result. Sunday 12th November Barry Town Under 19s 5 Aberystwyth Town Under 19s 2 Aberystwyth Town’s young development squad fell to only their second defeat of the season at the hands of Barry Town United on a crisp Sunday afternoon at Jenner Park. Two goals from Liam Doherty had looked like handing Aber all three points but a strong second half performance from the hosts, capped off by a Brad Cotterill hat-trick meant Bari Morgan’s side went home empty handed. Aber’s youngsters started the game on the front foot, but it was the hosts who created the game’s first meaningful chances as striker Brad Cotterill first hit the post with a low drive, before shooting narrowly wide shortly afterwards. Aber weren’t fazed however, and on 9 minutes they took the lead as tricky winger Steffan Gittins cut inside his marker and crossed for Liam Doherty to volley home inside the six-yard box and make it 1-0. Soon after, Doherty had another golden opportunity but his low shot was well saved by Barry’s goalkeeper. Bari Morgan’s side continued to boss the game in midfield with Niall Coleridge especially effective, and on 25 minutes Harri Horwood created another good opportunity for the visitors, as his dangerous cross was well defended after a weaving run down the left flank. However, on 34 minutes the home side found an equaliser against the run of play as Callum Flynn latched on to a loose ball and finished well past Aber goalie Alex Pennock to make it 1-1. Barry found some momentum and on 36 minutes had a goal disallowed for a push on Harri Rowe, before Cotterill again went close for the hosts, but the scores remained level at half time. The second half began similarly to the first, with Aber keeping possession nicely, and using the pace of Gittins and Horwood to attack on both flanks. Carwyn Morgan and Lee Jenkins marshalled the defence well, whilst midfielders Jack Rimmer and Tom Evans began to influence the game more. On 55 minutes, Aber again took the lead after Liam Doherty pounced on a long throw and drilled an excellent low shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-1. Soon after, Aber’s dangerous front man almost got his hat trick as he pressured Barry’s goalie into a mistake, only for the ‘keeper to rectify it almost immediately by spreading himself well and preventing a third goal. Indeed, it proved to be a pivotal moment in the game as on 66 minutes Barry again found an equaliser as left back Luke Davidson smashed a 20 yard screamer into the top corner to make it 2-2. Suddenly Aber began to look a little heavy-legged and lost their grip on the game. On 68 minutes, the home side took the lead for the first time in the game as Cotterill tapped into an empty net after more good work from left back Davidson. Soon after it was 4-2 to the hosts, as Cotterill again found the net after turning sharply inside the penalty area and firing past ‘keeper Alex Pennock. Bari Morgan’s men tried in vain to find a way back into the game as Harri Rowe and substitute Josh Crowl provided good width from both flanks but it just wasn’t to be. As the game entered stoppage time, Barry striker Cotterill capped off an excellent performance by grabbing his hat-trick after a weaving run and shot from just inside the penalty area. A disappointing finish after what was a very promising start by Bari Morgan’s young side; who for large spells of the game looked confident and assured, playing attractive possession football. Manager Morgan was quick to admit after the game that his side weren’t quite at the races at Jenner Park, but that he’s been pleased with the performance of his players up until this point in the season. His side will now look to bounce back in next Sunday’s Welsh Youth Cup tie against Afan Lido at Park Avenue. Park Avenue was granted a huge cup tie in Monday's Welsh Cup Third Round Draw as the Black and Greens were drawn to host holders Bala Town over the weekend of the 2nd/3rd December 2017, the only all WPL tie of the round. Bala pulled off a huge upset, scoring two late late goals to defeat TNS 2-1 in the 2017 Welsh Cup Final at Nantporth, and went on to represent Wales in the Europa League. The Lakesiders will also visit Park Avenue for a dress rehearsal in the WPL a week on Friday, 17th November, and Aber are awaiting precise confirmation of the Welsh Cup match date and kick off time. Wales goalkeeper coach Tony Roberts and former international Danny Gabbidon assisted with the JD Welsh Cup Round 3 draw, which will see many southern based teams travel north in Round 3 for fixtures that are due to be played on 2/3 December. The full draw is as follows: Aberystwyth Town v Bala Town Airbus UK Broughton v Goytre Ammanford v Carmarthen Town Bangor City v Cwmamman United Buckley Town v Flint Town United Caernarfon Town v Barry Town United Connah’s Quay Nomads v Cwmbran Celtic Llandudno Junction v Penydarren BGC Llandudno v Gresford Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant v Cefn Druids Newtown v Guilsfield Penybont v Cardiff Met University Pontypridd Town v Haverfordwest County Porthmadog v Panteg Prestatyn Town v Ruthin Town The New Saints v Penrhyncoch |
