Welsh Premier League Cup First Round Second Leg
Tuesday 31st January
Aberystwyth Town 1 Afan Lido 0
(Afan Lido win 2-1 on aggregate)

Aberystwyth Town played well this evening as their young side won their League Cup First Round Second Leg game against Afan Lido 1-0, but the Black and Greens were unfortunate to bow out of the tournament 2-1 on aggregate.

With new signing Michael Walsh making his debut in midfield, Aber took a short while to compose themselves as Lido pushed forward. However, once the hosts started passing the ball around they looked the better side, and created chance after chance in the first half. Chris Llewellyn’s low shot was gathered by Craig Morris in the Lido goal, the dangerous Geoff Kellaway shot just wide, and Aneurin Thomas too missed the target. Despite playing well, the killer touch was missing, and in fact Carl Evans and Alex Ricketts fired shots wide for Lido, who looked most dangerous using their pace on the break.

After Shane Williams fired wide for the visitors from the left early on in the second half, Aber once again took control and Kellaway worked himself an opening but sent his shot narrowly wide. Then on 65 minutes came the breakthrough that the Black and Greens so richly deserved, as Parkinson played in Krzystzof Nalborski on the right wing, and he cut inside to shoot low under the keeper to take the lead. Three substitutes from the Academy boosted Aber’s chances with Liam James at right back, Rhydian Davies in centre midfield and Alex Samuel up front all looking very comfortable on the ball. Parkinson unleashed a terrific volley which Morris did well to catch, Josh Shaw had an attempt parried, and Samuel missed the target by the narrowest of margins. It seemed the second goal must come, but with ten men behind the ball Lido held on, and progress to the second round to face Port Talbot or Carmarthen.

Despite losing the tie, the home team were clapped off and their performance should give Alan Morgan’s men a confidence boost before their first Play Off Conference game at Afan Lido this Friday evening (ko 7.30pm).
