An 86th minute goal from Newcastle Emlyn's Claire Thomas saw Aberystwyth Town Ladies crash out of the Central Wales Cup at the semi-final stage, on the away goal ruling.
A nervous start saw both teams test each other early on. Kelly Thomas in midfield had her hands full with Emlyn's Josie Wyngrave and it was the home team that stirred things up in the 21st minute, as a through ball from Carys Davies just evaded the path of Stacey Wells. Minutes later, Aber’s keeper Keryn Hawkins had to pull off a stunning save to keep out Marie Tilley’s strike. At the other end a well executed one two between Ffiona Evans and Cat Davies had home keeper Ffion Ashman at full stretch to deny the Seasiders. With 32 minutes on the clock, Aber’s Mel Davies barged through the home defence only to be bravely intercepted by Kirsty Fisher, while Lucy Hughes' cross found Samantha Gant who's header went narrowly over the crossbar.
The second half saw a pacier game with Meg Cook testing the visitors defence, while Angharad Jenkins, sitting in for an absent Sam Lumb, kept Aber in the game. With 59 minutes on the clock, Jackie McKinley almost broke the deadlock with a volley that was cleared off the line by Aber’s Stacey Davies. The play was even throughout most of the second half and a free kick just outside the box by Amanda John was kept out by Keryn Hawkins. With just four minutes of time remaining, the ball went over the stretched hand of keeper Keryn Hawkings, and fell to the path of Claire Thomas who slotted home and clinched a place in the final for Emlyn Ladies.
All in all, an exciting game that was a credit to women’s football, but Ray Hughes and his team must now concentrate on claiming the Ceredigion Ladies League title.
