Friday 13th April
Aberystwyth Town 2 Airbus UK Broughton 0

Aberystwyth Town gained a crucial win this evening at Park Avenue beating Airbus UK Broughton 2-0 thanks to goals from Sean Thornton and Geoff Kellaway, in a game they thoroughly deserved to win.

Aber received an early blow when Craig Williams was injured, but Liam James came on and impressed at right back. Mark Cadwallader broke for the visitors and shot wide, but that was a rare error at the back for the hosts, whose defence was almost impeccable for the remainder of the game. The Black and Greens were working hard, none more so than the evergreen Andy Parkinson, who went on a good run and created an opening for Thornton, who lobbed over from a narrow angle. Kellaway’s electric pace was shocking the Airbus back four, and his endeavour earned him a great chance which Mulliner saved. A promising half for Aber ended 0-0, but home supporters had good hope for the second half.

They were right to do so. Eleven minutes in Parkinson down the left gave defender Danny Taylor twisted blood inside the box, and was hacked down for a penalty. Sean Thornton dispatched the spot kick confidently to widespread relief. Aber kept control of the game and continued attacking, and Josh Macauley delivered a superb cross from the left which Kellaway headed just wide. In a rare attempt on goal for Airbus, Mark Cadwallader curled a left footed shot into Steve Cann’s arms, but generally Wyn Thomas was imperious in the air and there was no way through. As the game moved into injury time, Macauley found a wonderful spot in the right channel, and played Kellaway in, and the flying winger’s run and shot flew past Andy Mulliner in the goal to cap a wonderful evening for the Black and Greens.

Three wins out of four have transformed Aber’s season and, amazingly, given them an outside chance of earning a Europa League Play Off in May, as they now stand only two points behind Afan Lido and Port Talbot. Smiles have replaced frowns at Park Avenue, and admission to next Saturday’s game at Newtown is free of charge, so come and support the boys. Kick off time is currently 3.30pm, but this is to be confirmed later in the week.
