Roger Blair Davies

Roger Davies was one of a number of local teenagers who were drafted into the Aber 1st team on the withdrawl from the Welsh league in the 1963-1964 season.

He slotted into the full back berth and there he claimed the position making 222 appearences over 10 seasons. Roger was ever present and ever reliable making a wonderful paring with Dai 'Bwchi' Evans. He was part of the triumphant Welsh Amateur Cup side which lifted the trophy in 1970 where his tough tackling and creative link play will long be remembered.

Aberystwyth Town has lost one of its outstanding post war defenders with the tragic death on Sunday of Roger Davies.

Along with his fellow full back partner, the late Dai ‘Bwch’ Evans, Roger was a Town regular for some ten years in the 1960s and early 1970s during one of the most successful periods in the Club’s history.

I had the pleasure of watching most of his 222 games for the Black and Greens and I cannot recall him ever having a run-around. Indeed, I know that many of the revered wingers of the day used to hate playing against Roger because he always seemed to get the better of them.

He was never a particularly stylish player; indeed in many ways he was an unconventional right back. But he read the game well and his grit, determination and never-say-die approach made him a big favourite amongst the Park Avenue faithful. He really was Mr Consistency – and a genuinely nice person at the same time. I cannot recall him ever being booked, let alone sent off.

His crowning glory was helping Aberystwyth to their first Welsh Amateur Cup success for over 30 years in 1970 when he played in the same side as his two cousins, Alan and Neal Blair. It was a deserved honour for someone who had served the Club so well.

In recent years Roger battled his illness with the same courage and determination that he had showed on the football field.

A great many soccer supporters in Aberystwyth will share my sadness at his sad passing and extend our thoughts to his family.

Roy Hancock, former Aberystwyth Town FC Secretary

The death of Roger Davies will sadden many supporters particularly those of us who remember him playing for Aberystwyth in the 60s and 70s.  Roger played over 200 games for Aberystwyth during a golden era in the clubs history and was an integral part of the team that won the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1970. His performance in that memorable game in Llanidloes as well as the Welsh Cup match against Cardiff City (a side which featured Current Wales manager John Toshack) at Park Avenue in 1969 established him as legend in a team of Green Legends.
