Aber Town started off their season with an excellent two goal victory away to Colwyn Bay yesterday, with goals from Niall Flint (penalty, 38 mins) and John Owen (75 mins) enough to send the Black and Greens through to Round Three in high spirits ahead of Friday’s league kick off away to Newtown. On a balmy Saturday afternoon in North Wales the Black and Greens kicked off their 2024/25 campaign, with new signings Christoph Aziamale and Frankie Eales slotting into the line up, and Azaiamale battled well to get an early shot in from the left, which was saved. Craig Lindfield had a shot blocked for the Bay then at the other end Johnny Evans won a corner for Town, but Niall Flint’s delivery just avoided everyone. Louis Bradford, solid at the back, also sent in a back header from a set piece which was saved by Rhys Williams, then Eales made a superb late block down Aber’s right to deny Lindfield. Lewis Sirrell headed wide from the resultant corner showing the Colwyn Bay did have a goal threat, and Dave Jones saved a shot from Gwion Dafydd, but Flint was becoming evermore influential in the game, and Flint it was who earned a penalty for the Black and Greens when his shirt was pulled by Cai Owen, and he dispatched the spot kick confidently for a crucial lead. Harry Arnison then had a shot blocked for a corner and Liam Walsh went on a swashbuckling run from left back before sending in a super curler which Williams just turned round the post. Aber defended a late set piece well and saw out the half for a one nil margin at the break.
Into the second half and Ethan Roberts fired wide for the hosts, and Sirrell saw a dangerous header cleared. Dave Jones saved a glancing header from Dafydd, and blocked another effort, but then Aber broke and Man of the Match Flint sent Evans down the right flank with a superb ball, only for the flying bus driver to fire just over the crossbar in a dramatic moment. Town fielded some more set pieces then John Owen pulled off a trick down the left but saw his shot saved. With Aber needing a second they started to play some excellent football on a very good surface. Ealing went on a surging run into the box but his penalty call went unheeded, and then minutes later Flint roared down the right past Sirrell to the corner, before playing the ball back perfectly for Owen to slot home, and kill the game in the Seasiders’ favour. Credit to the hosts who kept going: sub Tom Weir blasted over from a good position, then saw another shot blocked, Joel Giblin danced through before testing Jones with a low shot, and Tom Marsh-Hughes side footed wide, but clinical Aber applied some later pressure with the subs prominent. Devon Torry won a free kick down the right, Ealing crossed for Gwion Dafis to fire over from a good position, and the old master Alex Darlington sent in a later corner for Bradford to head wide, and the job was done. This was a promising start to the season for Aber and a very good result away to tough opponents who never gave up. Their clinical finishing and solid defending was the difference in a relatively close game and hopefully this will stand Anthony Williams’ men in good stead ahead of the JD Cymru opener away to Newtown on Friday (ko 7.45pm).
