Uwchgynghrair JD Cymru Premier Mawrth/Tuesday 3 Medi/September Y Seintiau Newydd/TNS 2 Tref Aberystwyth Town 0 Roedd goliau Jordan Williams (59 munud) a cyn arwr y Gwyrdd a’r Duon Jake Canavan (90+2 munud) yn ddigon i’r Seintiau Newydd, sydd ar fin camu i Gynghrair Cyngres Europa, i orchfygu Tref Aber ar ol iddynt amddiffyn am eu bywydau am nawdeg munud. Arbedodd Dave Jones cic o’r smotyn gan Adrian Ciesliewicz i gadw’r sgor yn barchus. Goals from Jordan Williams (59 minutes) and ex Aber starlet Jake Canavan (90+2 minutes) were enough for Europa Conference League bound TNS to overcome an Aber Town side which defended extremely well over the ninety minutes. Aber keeper Dave Jones also saved a penalty from Adrian Ciesliewicz (80 minutes) to keep the score respectable. After a momentous night last Thursday for TNS, Tuesday evening’s game was a lower key event, however the Black and Greens, or Black and Yellows on the night, set out to defend with determination and organisation from the off. Jordan Williams curled wide for TNS in the first minute and Adam Wilson cut inside and tested Dave Jones’ gloves with a low effort soon afterwards. The hosts went on to thoroughly dominate possession, but failed to create too many clear cut chances with Aber sitting deep and defending for their lives. Matthew Olosunde blasted wide after a great block, but then the visitors pushed forward and sent in three set pieces which the Saints repelled well. Dan Williams was next to curl just over, as did Sion Bradley soon afterwards. Working so hard and defending like tigers meant that Aber really struggled to keep possession, with the Saints snapping the ball back within seconds of losing it, and Wilson curled a late effort towards goal, which Jones was again equal to. Three minutes of injury time came and went and the half time arrived with a commendable goal less scoreline for the visitors.
The match pattern continued after the break and Ben Clark was next to fire over for the hosts. Jones caught another effort from Wilson, then Jordan Williams and last season’s Green Idol Ben Woollam sent attempts over the bar with the Champions starting to look frustrated. Then a series of corners from Bradley ended with Jordan Williams sending an acrobatic overhead kick at the back post into the bottom corner, and the Saints had a lead which they surely deserved on the balance of play. TNS now looked to kill off the game but the Seasiders stood firm with a huge defensive shift. Ciesliewicz danced through before stabbing wide, but then with fifteen minutes to go the visitors started to threaten what would have been a momentous draw. Sub Steff Davies was causing havoc and earned a couple of free kicks on the edge of the TNS area, the first of which sub Alex Darlington sent a cute effort just over the bar, and the second of which lead to Iwan Lewis seeing a big shot on goal blocked. The hosts were awarded a penalty with ten minutes to go, but Dave Jones got down brilliantly to his right to deny Ciesliewicz, and with the board of three minutes additional time going up Aber were pressing for a leveller. However with seconds remaining Canavan danced into space and found the bottom corner for a second goal, which was maybe even a little harsh on Aber given the admirable organisation and defensive solidity they had shown for so long, away to the Champions. Defeats are never to be celebrated but if there was ever such a thing as a good defeat, this was it. Huge credit has to go in particular to Jones in goal along with Zac Hartley, Frankie Ealing, Rhys Davies, Louis Bradford and Jack Thorn at the back, however each and every player played their defensive part and if Town can defend like this for the rest of the season, they will be fine. The scene is now set for Saturday’s teatime test against Flint at Park Avenue – please remember the later kick off time of 5.15pm!
