Uwchgynghrair JD Cymru Premier Gwener/Friday 16 Awst/August Tref Aberystwyth Town 1 Cei Conna/Connah’s Quay Nomads 1 Bachodd gol gwefreiddiol John Owen yn y 76ed munud o gornel y bocs gem gyfartal gwerth chweil i Aber, gartre i Gei Conna, y neu gem gartref cyntaf o’r tymor newydd. Roedd Fumpa Mwandwe wedi agor y sgorio i’r Nomadiad ddeng munud ynghynt, ond roedd Aber yn llawn headdu’r pwynt ar drail perfformiad amddiffynol solet a dewr. John Owen’s sumptuous 76th minute volley from the edge of the area earned Aber an honourable draw at home to last season’s Runners Up Connah’s Quay Nomads, in their first home match of the 2024/25 season. Fumpa Mwandwe had given the Nomads the lead ten minutes earlier, but Owen’s response was nothing more than Aber deserved for a gutsy defensive performance New season excitement abounded before kick off with 340 supporters in place, travelling from as far away as Kent for Park Avenue’s bow, with the picturesque backdrop of the mid August setting sun in Ceredigion Bay framing events nicely. However the visitors were straight into it and Chris Marriott brought a sharp save from Dave Jones early on to serve notice of intent. Callum Huxley had a free kick saved soon afterwards but the Nomads went on to dominate the half for long periods. Livewire Mwandwe down the left set up Eliot Duggan to fire over, Aber defended a number of corners solidly, then Noah Edwards fired over the bar. Devon Torry turned and fired over for Aber and soon after had a lob saved, but at the other end Declan Poole had a low shot blocked as did Edwards, before Mwandwe hot the side netting. Jonathan Evans nearly found Owen in space, but then Rhys Hughes twice blasted wide, Aron Williams had a low effort saved by Jones for a corner and Dugan headed over in injury time so that a big defensive half for Aber ended goalless.
The pattern of the game remained after the break with the Nomads dominating the ball and creating half chances. Williams stabbed wide, then Mwandwe headed wide at the back post. Ben Nash almost opened the scoring for Aber with a dangerous backpass which George Radcliffe desperately cleared, then Owen surged down the right and crossed for Evans to tap wide for Aber. Steff Davies came on up front to rattle a few feathers, but then at the three quarter point of the game a surging run from onetime Aber loanee Luca Hogan created consternation, and the ball fell nicely for Mwandwe to score from close range and give Nomads the lead they had worked so hard for. If anything the goal livened the hosts more than the visitors: Jack Thorn headed wide at the near post from Evans’ cross, then with a quarter hour remaining Iwan Lewis’ speculative ball into the box was cleared only as far as Owen, and the Aber legend controlled the ball before sending a right footed volley arching over Radcliffe for a superb goal and a Gol y Mis contender which sent the Dias Stand into raptures. The Black and Greens now faced even more pressure, but with Thorn and Louis Bradford outstanding at the back, and Dave Jones commanding in goal, they held firm. Corner after corner piled in, but six nervy minutes of injury time created no more clear cut efforts, and finally the whistle went and Aber the a point they had worked so hard for. This was an excellent defensive performance, but Anthony Williams’ men showed that they can threaten the Top Two side too and John Owen’s super strike was just what was needed to lift the supporters’ hearts as a new home season began for Aber Town. Next up is another Fab Friday fixture at home to Barry Town, next Friday night with an 8pm kick off. We can’t wait! Comments are closed.
