Jonny Evans’ second goal of the season secured the victory against Barry Town United on Friday evening and left Aber with 4 points from the opening 3 games – a solid start overall and an unbeaten start to the season at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue!
Penybont have also started the season well and have 5 points from 3 games. They beat Briton Ferry Llansawel 2-0 on opening night, before registering goalless draws at home to Newtown and away to Haverfordwest County. During the summer they added Pontypridd United captain Clayton Green and former Cardiff City forward James Crole and the latter has already hit the goal trail with two goals against Briton Ferry. Another addition to the roster at the SDM Glass stadium is Mike Lewis – the former Aber shotstopper joining after several successful years at Barry Town United. Their squad on Saturday will feature a number of other familiar faces; non more so than Aber legend Chris Venables, who had two spells at Park Avenue earlier in his career. Venables was once again a proflic goalscorer last season, hitting over 20 goals in all competitions. The host’s Manager, Rhys Griffiths, spent the 2015/16 at Park Avenue, netting 7 goals in 21 appearances, whilst Captain Kane Owen is another who wore Black & Green earlier in his career; having had a brief spell at Park Avenue back in 2016. There were four meetings between the two sides last season. Penybont were the victors on two occasions, both at Park Avenue, whilst Aber secured a win and a draw from the meetings at the SDM Glass Stadium.
