Saturday 25th January (ko 2.30pm)
The New Saints v Aberystwyth Town
It’s fair to say that Aberystwyth Town have not enjoyed the luck of the draw this season. In the Nathaniel MG Cup they faced four consecutive away draws, and had to beat both of last season’s Finalists, Cambrian & Clydach, and Cardiff Met, away from home to reach the Semi Finals.
After a brief respite from the Road with a Welsh Cup Third Round tie at home to Ruthin Town, which Aber won 2-1 thanks to goals from Geoff Kellaway and a last minute screamer from Wes Baynes, the Footballing Gods once again turned their backs on the Black and Greens, sending them off on their travels again – this time to take on the Welsh Cup Holders and Welsh Premier League Champs The New Saints.
Favourites TNS should be wary however, as Aber have saved their best form for away matches this season, and have lost only two of their last ten matches on the road, winning five. Town’s new look side, which featured four transfer windows signings last week in Alhagi Touray Sisay, Ilan Hughes, Pavel Vieira and David Thompson have had a brilliant start to the Twenties, winning both games and yet to concede a single goal in 2020, and Paulo Mendes has caught the eye with four assists already.
Manager Mathew Bishop is delighted with the way his new recruits are bedding in, but the test facing Town on Saturday is of a different magnitude, and an Aber win at Park Hall would be a sensation. Town will be unable to select Connor Roberts in goal, as he is on loan from TNS, so Alex Pennock will deputise, and the Seasiders will be looking for the same disciplined defensive display they gave last time out at Park Hall, when the game ended 2-0 to the hosts.
The match at Park Hall will kick off at 2.30pm and further details are available on TNS’ excellent website here. Join the Black and Green fans hoping to fall in love with Aber’s performance, and avoid a massacre on Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen – the Welsh Valentine’s Day!
