Aber’s Young Guns Crown a Wonderful Night in Black and Greens’ 1000th Cymru Premier Match

Tuesday 1st February
Aberystwyth Town 2 Haverfordwest County 0

Aber Town’s superb young guns crowned a wonderful occasion at Park Avenue last night as an immense crowd of 883 turned up to celebrate the Black and Greens’ 1000th Cymru Premier match. A good result was needed to top off the evening and Antonio Corbisiero’s players delivered, with second half goals from Sam Phillips (65 mins) and a penalty from Matty Jones (74 mins) sealing a hard fought win, as visiting sub Henry Jones was sent off after just two minutes to compound the visitors’ misery.

For Town Sam Phillips came into replace the injured Jon Owen from the start and the importance of the game was reflected in a cagey start, with few chances of note. Jordan Davies blasted over for County, Aber’s Jamie Veale almost picked out Harry Franklin and Davies had another effort from distance touched round the post by the ever reliable Gregor Zabret. The visitors posed a threat going forward but the home defence was solid, with Louis Bradford particularly commanding, along with his erstwhile centre back partner Lee Jenkins.  At the other end Bradford headed a Matty Jones free kick wide, and visiting keeper Lee Idzi got out well to deny Steff Davies. Franklin directed a back post header straight at Idzi, and Jack Thorn saw a huge volley blocked, with Aber looking dangerous. Davies blazed wide again for Haverfordwest, before Bradford again went close with a header which landed on top of the net, from Veale’s free kick: and a cagey first half ended goalless.

Into the second half and Phillips cut just past the near post with an early chance, while Zabret remained alert to deny Davies and Kurtis Rees. Then Jonathan Evans replaced the industrious Steff Davies, and injected vigour into Aber’s attacking press with a committed display.  Lee Jenkins saw a header cleared and then Phillips had a goal disallowed, but minutes later a vigorous press saw Dylan Rees dispossessed by Phillips, and he cut a beautiful finish from the right into Idzi’s far corner for a goal of enormous significance, his fifth of the season. The visitors tried to respond but Ricky Watts’ effort was high and wide, and in fact the Black and Greens almost had more joy when Matty Jones nicked the ball off Jazz Richards, and Jonathan Evans curled his cross wide. The irrepressible bus driver made amends seconds later however: another huge volley from Thorn was parried by Idzi, and Evans acrobatically send it back towards Franklin, who was summarily upended by Idzi for the most stonewall penalty seen all season at Park Avenue. In remonstrating with the ref Henry Jones was sent off, presumable for foul and abusive language, and Matty Jones retained his composure to slot home Town’s second and send the Dias Stand into raptures. New signing Ben Wynne then came on to replace super Sam Phillips; Davies chipped over the bar for Haverfordwest with Zabret out well soon after to protect his clean sheet. Bradford pulled out a huge tackle to deny sub Sisay in the box, and once Aber had repelled some late corners, the final whistle went to seal a perfect evening at Park Avenue.

Two huge home wins in four days has turned Aber’s season for the better, and Antonio Corbisiero’s men can start looking up the table. Currently in ninth with 23 points, two more positive results in Aber’s remaining matches at Haverfordwest (Friday 11th Feb) and Bala (Sat 26th Feb) would ensure a really positive vibe at the Club looking ahead to phase II. Thank you for your amazing and loyal support: and here’s to the next 1000 matches!
