Aberystwyth Town 0 Penybont 3: Match Report

23/10/2021

JD Cymru Premier
Friday 22nd October
Aberystwyth Town 0 Penybont 3

Aber Town suffered a really bad night at the office as goals from James Waite (16 and 49 minutes) and Keane Watts (33 mins) condemned them to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Penybont FC. The visitors were the beneficiaries of some very generous defending as individual mistakes lead directly to all three goals, to leave a sour taste in the mouth for those of a Black and Green persuasion feeling sick as a parrot.

After two morale boosting wins in four days away to Cefn Druids and Saltney Town the Black and Greens were looking to continue their positive momentum, and the game kicked off at a high pace. Jonathan Evans had a flicked volley blocked and then Penybont’s Nathan Wood went on a trademark mazy run, but his cross evaded everyone. Jack Rimmer burst forward before playing in Evans but once again his shot hit a blue barrier, then at the other end a mix up allowed Waite to burst through the backline and lob home goalie Gregor Zabret to put the Bont a goal to the good. Back came Aber and Owain Jones’ goalbound corner was punched clear by Ashley Morris, and Harry Franklin shot over the bar. Sam Snaith saw a header saved by Zabret, then Louis Bradford shot over for Aber, and then came the killer second, when Zabret’s clearance freakishly found the belly of Keane Watts and deflected back 30 yards into the goal for two-nil. With Penybont attacking and pressing with pace and sharpness, Aber were forced back and looked second best, and although Bradford again went close with a header from Rimmer’s diagonal cross the visitors were good value for a two goal lead at half time.

The hosts made a determined start to the second half with Bradford again heading wide from a corner, but then another mix up allowed Waite to nick in at pace and chip the ball over Zabret to kill the game with 40 minutes left  to play. Mael Davies had a shot saved by Zabret, who then denied the livewire Waite a hat trick. Franklin was looking Aber’s best chance of a score and he sent an attempt wide, Evans sent a backheader goalwards but Morris saved easily, and sub Matty Jones sent in some testing balls, but it was just not happening for disappointing Aber. Raul Correia couldn’t convert Rhys Davies’ ball in, Nathan Wood had a shot deflected back to Zabret and then Aber’s match was summed up in injury time when Matty’s Jones free kick from the edge of the area sailed over the bar, to ensure the score remained at 0-3.

Aber have bemoaned some bad luck in tight matches so far this season but last night’s was a comprehensive defeat and the Black and Greens will now know that any defensive frailties will be cruelly punished at this level. Manager Antonio Corbisiero will be expecting a huge response from his side when Flint Town United come to town next Friday evening (ko 8pm). Better days lie ahead!
