Aberystwyth Town Ladies 2 Shrewsbury Town Ladies 1
Aber made it two wins in just four days with a 2-1 victory against very tough opponents Shrewsbury Town Ladies.
Shrewsbury started off the better side and were dominant in possession whilst Aberystwyth were looking a bit nervy, and young Aber goalkeeper Katie Christopher had to make some good saves to keep the scores level. Despite Shrewsbury having most of the ball it was the home side that opened the scoring on 32 minutes. A free kick from the left eventually came to Cat Davies who scored with her first touch after coming on as a substitute. Aberystwyth started to play some good football and were causing the Shrewsbury defence some problems but were unable to double their lead. Shrewsbury then went very close with the last kick of the half. A shot from the edge of the box went narrowly wide of the Aber goal.
Like the first half, it was Shrewsbury who started the better side and 10 minutes into the half, the scores were level as Nic Durnall’s well taken free kick from 30 yards ended up in the top corner. Despite conceding, Aber stayed calm as they looked for a second to re-gain the lead and their wide players were causing the Shrews defence some problems. Shrewsbury then came extremely close to taking the lead when Durnall’s free-kick deflected off the wall and smashed the cross bar. On 66 minutes the home side were back in front, as a cross into the box fell to an Aber trialist who was able to score from close range. The home team were now looking strong going forward and were causing the Shrewsbury defence all sorts of problems with their pace up front. Aber thought they’d scored again but this time the goal was ruled out for offside. Shrewsbury did push forward for an equaliser but it was Aber who came off the pitch as the winning side.
This was a very tough match for the Black and Greens but they worked extremely hard for the victory against very good opposition. The league season starts on 3rd September and if you’d like to join the team please contact one of the coaches or email email@example.com
