ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL

23/4/2016

Dafabet Welsh Premier League
Aberystwyth Town 4-0 Bangor City
Saturday 23rd April
ATT: 751

A highly successful Family Fun Day at the club was followed by equal success on the pitch as Aberystwyth dispatched Bangor City 4-0 in the Welsh Premier League to keep them in contention for a European Play-Off place
.

An electric atmosphere at Park Avenue, boosted by an impressive away support, was not justified by the play as the two sides struggled to assert their dominance on the match. In a half of very few chances it was Bangor that came closest, speedy winger Christian Langos, causing all sorts of problems down the right flank and whipping the ball across the face of goal. Frustration led to a succession of shots from range, Bangor's Ashley Young going close from 25 yards. The home side's best chance fell to Stuart Jones but his powerful header was sent over the crossbar. Both teams trudged in at half time with the 751 in attendance hoping for a drastic improvement in proceedings.

It was Bangor City who initially came out of the blocks quickest, Shaun Cavanagh forcing a double save from Mike Lewis before Langos again posed a threat, but a rather tame effort was not trouble for Lewis. This seemed to spark the Black and Greens into life and seven minutes later, Chris Venables broke clear on the counter attack from a Kane Owen flick and finished astutely to break the deadlock.

Fast forward only four minutes and Venables is in on goal again, following a neat back heel clearance from Cledan Davies, the lead doubled with a calm finish into the corner. Aber really had the upper hand and pushed to increase their lead, Craig Williams' sublime free kick causing havoc in the box and eventually hacked clear by the Bangor defence. Ross Stephens then came close with a thundering left footed effort that sailed just wide and into the Dias Stand.

Aberystwyth continued to press, and an unnerved Bangor defence let Chris Venables slip away again and the league's top scorer, played in by the league's top assister Craig Williams, rounded the keeper and placed the ball confidently past the defenders on the line to complete an impressive hat-trick. 3-0. The fourth came 5 minutes from time, Ross Stephens completing the rout tucking in from a well placed corner.

The result leaves Aberystwyth in 8th place in the league, hoping for Airbus to win the cup so as to ensure a play-off place. The club would like to offer a massive thank you to the 200 or so who came to the family fun day event before the game. We hope a good time was had by one and all. The next time the Park Avenue turf sees action will be the last time as the Leave Your Mark match takes place on May 13th. Promises to be a good one!
