Wynne was known as an all action wing half, or full back: a local boy who was educated at Ardwyn Grammar School and moved on to study at Loughborough University, whom he also represented. After University Wynne returned to Aberystwyth and became Head of Physical Education at Ardwyn. He later joined the staff of University College Wales Aberystwyth as a Physical Education Lecturer in Teacher Training, and went on to become Director of that Department and an Honorary Life Vice President of Aberystwyth Town Football Club. Wynne coached the University Football Team for many years and won the British Universities Cup under the Captaincy of Donald Kane: he was also Coach to the Welsh and British Universities teams. Hughes was also a well known local sportsman playing golf, tennis, squash, rugby and was also an officer and administrator for many sports. Aberystwyth Town FC sends its sincere condolences to Wynne's family and friends at this difficult time. JD Cymru Premier
Saturday 18th January Aberystwyth Town 1 Penybont 0 Aber Town ended their Phase I with two consecutive wins and clean sheets as Paulo Mendes' dangerous cross tempted the unfortunate Billy Borge of Penybont to score an own goal past his own keeper in the fourth minute, gifting the Black and Greens a vital home win. On a cold evening defences were on top and the Seasiders retained their lead stoutly in a game of few chances to claim the spoils and continue their great start to 2020. Manager Mathew Bishop gave home debuts to David Thompson, Pavel Vieira and Ilan Hughes, and a full debut up front to new signing Alhagi Touray Sisay, whose international clearance had arrived overnight. A hectic start saw Aber starting well, with Matthew Jones sending in some excellent crosses from the left: however the hosts’ goal came from the opposite side. Magnificent Paulo Mendes pulled out a great trick down the right wing to beat his marker, and sent in such a dangerous cross that Borge deflected it past his own keeper Ashley Morris to give the Black and Greens a crucial lead: Mendes’ fourth assist in the last two matches! Back came the visitors with the lightning fast Nathan Wood winning the ball in midfield before shooting wide, only for Touray to turn his defender at the other end and send in a shot which Morris parried to safety. A nice move from Penybont ended with Ashley Evans sending in a low shot for Connor Roberts to save, then Michael George surged down the right and crossed for Dan Griffiths to curl a shot just past the post. After a promising start for the hosts, the visitors were now taking the initiative, with Aber showing good defensive discipline through Thompson and Lee Jenkins in particular. Another searching cross from Jones just evaded Touray at the far post, and the same pair combined minutes later as Touray flicked past the post. Kane Owen’s free kick was headed wide by Kostya Georgievsky, with Penybont threatening again, then Jenkins pulled out a superb goal saving challenge to deny Wood a strike on goal. James Sadler saw a shot deflected safely to Roberts in Aber’s goal, and in injury time Mendes and Wes Baynes were denied by strong blocks, and the Black and Greens went into half time a goal to the good. Another hectic start characterised the second half, although clear cut chances were limited. Touray beat his man and curled a left footed volley goalbound only for Morris to save, and then Jenkins surged upfield from centre back, and his effort aimed at the far corner also threatened Morris, only to be deflected back to Geoff Kellaway who fired over. Mendes sent in a ball which Captain Marc Williams headed at the visiting goalkeeper. Penybont were dominating possession but their final ball was frustrating their attempts to score, for example when Wood’s cross was aimed straight at Connor Roberts: and the disciplined Seasiders were working very hard to deny the visitors any clear cut opportunities. Georgievsky headed wide again, then Jones sent in yet another quality cross for Williams to glance wide. Jones’ corner was then deflected and cleared off the line by a visiting defender, and Penybont went close with a header at the death, but Aber held on for a crucial clean sheet and three points. Saturday’s win was a very different type of game to last week, and Penybont certainly deserve credit for the progressive style of football they displayed, but once again Aber defended excellently, created plenty of chances and showed the know how to win a game of football. With a three week break ahead in the JD Cymru Premier the Black and Greens are solid in ninth place at the split with 23 points, and have eight points to make up on Cardiff Met in seventh if they are to challenge for a UEFA Europa League Play Off spot at the end of the season. Well done Aber! Photo courtesy of Colin Ewart Saturday 18th January (ko 5.15pm) JD Cymru Premier Aberystwyth Town v Penybont Aberystwyth Town look to extend the Feelgood Factor they created up at Caernarfon last Friday night as they welcome Penybont FC to Park Avenue on Matchday 22 of the JD Cymru League’s 2019/20 season, for a Saturday tea time kick off. This will be the final match of the first phase of games, and with Aber sitting on twenty points in ninth place, they already know that the Bottom Six, or Play Off Conference, is their destiny. The Black and Greens sit eight point clear of relegation, and eight points behind Cardiff Met who currently occupy the UEFA Europa League Play Off Spot of seventh, so a win on Saturday evening will have the Seasiders looking upwards as Phase II gets underway in three weeks’ time. Mathew Bishop’s Players did magnificently last Friday night in a blowing gale to deny Caernarfon Town direct qualification to the Top Half with a 3-0 victory. Midfield Maestro Paulo Mendes got three assists, and Captain Fantastic Marc Williams notched 2 goals, with his first effort amended to an own goal after the game. Aber’s new signings Ilan Hughes, Pavel Vieira and David Thompson all did well too, not the Black and Greens’ magnificent supporters who sang and disco danced all night behind Caernarfon's goal. Their support will be so important for the remainder of the season as Aber aim to climb up the table and get involved in the race for seventh place. Visitors Penybont are making a good fist of it in their first season in the Cymru Premier, and are currently a few points clear of the relegation zone in tenth. Their Manager Rhys Griffiths of course spent a season up front at Park Avenue, and he has done a great job to ensure his side show the resilience to remain in close games, giving them the chance to earn valuable "bonus" points, as they did through another ex Seasider, Kostya Geogievsky in Aber’s 1-1 draw down in Bridgend back in October. Penybont also got a great win up at Druids last weekend and will also be eagerly anticipating Saturday’s game. Admission for this JD Cymru Premier clash will cost £7 for Adults, £4 for Concessions and just £1 for Kids. Join the Black and Green Bandwaggon to see if they can remain unbeaten in the 2020s! Kick off is at 5.15pm. Aberystwyth Town are delighted to announce the signing of Adam Davies, who joins the Club having already scored seventeen goals for JD Cymru North side Guilsfield this season. Adam, needless to say, is a forward and strong target man who has previous played for TNS, Welshpool Town, Haughmond and Ellesmere Port. His performances in the Cymru North have caught the eye this season and the Black and Greens will be hoping that his superb goal scoring run continues in Phase II of the JD Cymru Premier 2019/20. 23 year old Adam from Shrewsbury is subject to a one match suspension next week but will join the First Team Squad for the JD Welsh Cup match at TNS a week on Saturday. Everyone at Aberystwyth Town FC welcomes Adam to Park Avenue! JD Cymru Premier
Friday 10th January Caernarfon Town 0 Aberystwyth Town 3 New look Aber Town started the new decade off in the perfect way with a commanding 3-0 victory away to Top Six chasing Caernarfon Town, on a windy night by the Menai Straits last night. Captain Marc Williams got Town on their way on 35 minutes, and further second half strikes from Williams on 70 and 80 minutes had the Black and Greens and their fantastic supporters in Dreamland by the final whistle! Town’s three new signings: Pavel Vieira, Ilan Hughes and David Thompson all started, and their influence down the middle of the field was impressive. On a night of gale force winds Aber started with the natural advantage, but in truth the conditions affected the play and chances were few and far between early on. Geoff Kellaway tested Alex Ramsey in the first minute, Vieira almost picked out Williams in the box with a through ball, and Williams volleyed wide from 30 yards, while the off colour hosts were struggling to put passes together in the difficult conditions. Then the excellent Paulo Mendes won the ball down the right, and sent in a testing cross which was headed into the net by Williams. Aber’s amazing travelling support, who sang from the first minute to the last, danced for joy and Town were a goal up. The Black and Greens upped the tempo before the break with Hughes, Vieira and Mendes showing some nice touches in midfield: a Kellaway cross was deflected for a corner with super sniffer Williams ready to pounce, Mendes had a shot cleared and Richie Ricketts’ powerful volley brought a great save from Ramsay, who then denied Kellaway again from 30 yards to keep the score at 0-1 for half time. Aber were prepared for an onslaught after the break against the wind but the visitors remained in control. Kellaway nearly picked out Mendes in a breakaway, then Darren Thomas send the ball flying just over the bar for the Cofis’ first real opportunity of note in the game. Sion Bradley’s shot was deflected nicely to Connor Roberts in goal, but the strong winds was hindering Caernarfon’s plans with over hit passes the order of the day. Then Ilan Hughes made an incredible goal saving tackle in his own area to deny sub Sam Jones what looked a certain strike: as good as a goal. Kellaway went on another dangerous run and his cross just eluded Mendes, then Aber’s Portuguese enforcer won the ball in midfield, ran 40 yards towards goal before playing in Williams to volley Aber’s second into the bottom corner in front of the Green Army: 2-0! Williams had a shot blocked, then fired the next one wide, and for the hosts Thomas curled a volley wide, and sub Noah Edwards also missed the target after some trickery in midfield. Then with ten minutes to go Matty Jones’ free kick out 30 yards out on the right was headed goalbound by Mendes, and Ramsay’s parry fell perfectly for Williams to snaffle up his hat trick, and Aber’s third at the far post, with the Green Army disco dancing in delight as Aber lead by three. Jamie Breese for Caernarfon, and sub Luke Boundford for Aber volleyed wide and Thomas’ low shot was easy for Roberts in Aber’s goal, with the visitors holding on for victory after a strong and impressive performance which bodes well for the New Year. Supporters judged this to be Aber’s best performance of the season, and given the conditions and Caernarfon’s impressive home record it is hard to argue with that assertion. Certainly the Players and Management deserved huge credit for gelling so well so early, and the Black and Greens really need to kick on now if they are to challenge for a seventh placed finish. Next up is Penybont at Park Avenue on Saturday (ko 5.15pm). Join Us! |
