Ben Becomes Black & Green on Deadline Day!

31/1/2022

Picture
Aberystwyth Town are delighted to announce the signing of central midfielder Ben Wynne from fellow Cymru Premier side Cefn Druids.

A former pupil of the Steven Gerrard Academy, Ben impressed last summer to earn himself a move to Wales' top flight, signing with Cefn Druids alongside two others from the Liverpool legend's academy setup. Since joining The Ancients, Ben amassed 17 league appearances, finding the net twice, and two Welsh Cup appearances including against The Seasiders in September where he scored Druids' sole goal as Town came out on top 4-1.

Manager Antonio Corbisiero commented:

"Ben is a young lad that we've watched a number of times since the summer, including against ourselves where he's flashed his abilities. He's a very exciting talent and we're keen to get to work with him to take his game to the next level.

He's a fresh face for the squad who wants to make the most of his opportunities and prove himself at this level, so we're delighted to give him that chance. He'll be available for selection tomorrow so we're excited to see him in action - welcome Ben!"

Ben told us:

"I felt like this was the best decision for me to make as I can see many opportunities for myself in this team. From everyone I’ve spoken to so far, I’ve been warmly welcomed to the club. I feel like it’s a very well run club who focus on improving their players, as well as the good fan base they’ve got.

I’m a very versatile player and definitely someone who likes to have the ball at their feet and dribble well with it. I believe I can link up well with my teammates and look for ways we can keep improving as a team.

At this club, I’d like to add to my goals and assists tally. With the team I want to focus on winning games and moving up the table. I’m really looking forward to getting started here at Aberystwyth and continuing my hard work."

Croeso, Ben!

Match Preview: ATFC vs Hav'west County

31/1/2022

Aberystwyth Town vs Haverfordwest County
ATFC’S 1000th JD CYRMU PREMIER FIXTURE!!
Tuesday 1st February
8pm KO

Aberystwyth Town will become the first team to reach the significant milestone of 1000 Cymru Premier fixtures tomorrow night when the Seasiders host Haverfordwest County.

This run stretches right back to the very first matchday of then Konica League of Wales – 15th August 1992 – when Tomi Morgan led the team to a 3-2 victory over Mid-Wales rivals Caersws.

The first season would be a successful one for the Black & Greens, as the club challenged for the inaugural title, eventually finishing in 3rd place as Cwmbran Town, led by the legendary Tony Wilcox, claimed the honours.

Kevin Morrison was top scorer in that very first season, hitting 20 goals, whilst Michael Davies hit 17 as the club finished with 25 wins from 38 games.

To date, this is the clubs highest placed finish in the league, although 4th place finishes have occurred on no less than five occasions – in 1999, 2003, 2004, 2010 & 2015 – two of these resulted in UEFA Cup Football, whilst Europa League football came to Park Avenue in 2014 thanks to a runners-up.

15 different managers have managed the Seasiders during the 1000 games, with some having more than one spell at the helm.

Both sides come into tomorrow nights game on the back of a positive result, Aber beating Cefn Druids 5-0 at home on Friday night, whilst Haverfordwest drew their second successive game following the resumption of football – 2-2 against Penybont on Friday.

Aberystwyth Town FC are delighted to confirm that to celebrate the Black and Greens’ 1000th Cymru Premier match on Tuesday evening, supporters will be admitted for free.

In addition to free entry, we can also announce that courtesy of our Club Sponsors Cambrian Tyres, supporters arriving before 7.15pm will be allowed one free drink in the John Charles Lounge, and Ruth’s Kitchen will be offering 150 free hot dogs (first come first served).

The gates for spectators will open at 6.30pm, and the match kicks off at 8pm.

Finally in lieu of the free entry the Club will be coordinating a bucket collection for Bronglais Hospital’s Chemotherapy Appeal on Tuesday evening. A slate plaque commemorating the achievement of 1000 matches, kindly commissioned by the Football Association of Wales, will be unveiled in the John Charles Lounge prior to the match.

Franklin and Phillips Fire Up Aber in Five Goal Frenzy: Aberystwyth Town 5 Cefn Druids 0

29/1/2022

JD Cymru Premier
Friday 28th January
Aberystwyth Town 5 Cefn Druids 0

Imperious Aber Town earned a fantastic three points last night at a misty Park Avenue, hitting luckless Cefn Druids for five. Two super strikes from Harry Franklin (14 and 44 minutes), plus two more from supersub Sam Phillips (71 and 87 mins), and a cute finish from Jamie Veale (43 mins) saw Aber through.

Despite the inclement weather a very respectable crowd of 428 turned up and were vocal in their support of the Black and Greens. Aber in turn were at it from the start, snapping into tackles, pressing high and playing with an intensity which earned them domination of the first half. Steff Davies was released down the channel for a one on one, but visiting keeper Mike Jones made the first of a series of good saves to keep Aber at bay. Lee Jenkins headed wide from Veale’s cross, then just before the quarter hour the ball fell to Franklin thirty yards out and the Hereford hitman unleashed an audacious lob which flew into the top corner and delighted the home supporters – one nil! Davies was causing havoc in the visiting defence with a hugely committed performance, and Louis Bradford was next to head wide from a Jack Rimmer free kick. Franklin was denied a shot on goal by a strong challenge in the box then at the other end Aber-born Charley Edge dropped a free kick over the bar. Matty Jones had a shot punched wide by Mike Jones, and he fired another effort just wide minutes later. Veale was inches wide with a free kick then sent another effort just over the bar and Jon Owen was next to have an effort parried by the keeper, but then the incessant pressure paid off on 43 minutes when Owen released Jones who crossed for Veale to slot home a neat finish at the near post. Less than sixty seconds later Franklin was released down the right channel and he volleyed a scintillating strike into the far corner of the net to put the cheery on the top of a determined first half for Antonio Corbisiero’s men.

Into the second half and Veale had the first attempt on goal with a free kick which Jones caught, and he hit the crossbar with his next free kick with a thrilling effort. The Druids threatened a recovery of sorts as a back flicked effort was deflected for a corner, Liam Buckley had an effort blocked and Edge saw a free kick drift wide. Back came Aber with Davies almost setting up Franklin with a right wing cross, then seeing his own acrobatic volley saved by Jones. The unfortunate Kieran Smith was then sent off for Druids on 67 minutes for a second yellow card awarded for a foul on livewire sub Phillips, and Phillips himself made use of the space down the middle to run through and finish smartly under Jones for Aber’s fourth, assisted by Steff Davies. Franklin had a shot and then a header deflected for corners, and Rhys Davies headed wide also. Aber remained resolute at the back and sub Jonathan Evans was next to be denied by Jones, whose hands must have been stinging by the end of the game. Young Cameron Allen came on up front for his Park Avenue first team debut, and with three minutes to go Phillips was again released in space, this town down the right flank, and he found the opposite corner of the net to net a joyous fifth to crown a great night for anyone of a Black and Green persuasion.

Antonio Corbisiero’s young side delighted Park Avenue last night with a committed and skilful performance, which will give them great confidence heading into a double header against Haverfordwest County. Tuesday’s clash at Park Avenue is Aberystwyth Town’s 1000th Cymru Premier match, as the Seasiders become the first club to reach that significant milestone. Kick off is at 8pm - don’t miss out!

Match Preview: ATFC vs Cefn Druids

Aberystwyth Town vs Cefn Druids

8pm KO
Live Commentary - Welsh: Radio Aber, English: Radio Aber

Aberystwyth Town are back at Park Avenue for the first time in 7 weeks tonight as Antonio Corbisiero’s side host Cefn Druids in the Seasiders first home game of 2022.

Both teams tasted defeat on their return to league action last weekend, following the enforced winter break due to rise of the Omicron CV-19 variant, with Druids going down 3-1 at home to Caernarfon and Aber coming back from Penybont empty handed.

The team were backed by a loud Black & Green Army at the SDM Glass Stadium and Manager Corbisiero is hoping that a similar level of support to last weekend will help his team to get a positive result tomorrow night on home turf:

“Hopefully that gave the boys motivation to realise that the fans are 100% committed and behind them, and I firmly believe that we can look forward to the game with Cefn Druids next week and get the 3 points we vitally need.”

Tomorrow night’s opponents, Cefn Druids, are having a tough season so far and currently sit in 12th position in the table, having registered 2 points from their opening 18 games.

Joint top-scorer Charley Edge is available once again following suspension, as is Emmanuel Agyemang, although Joe Faux & former Seasider George Harry have recently departed The Rock for pastures new.

The two sides have already met twice this season, with Aber triumphing 4-1 at home in the Welsh Cup in September thanks to a Mathew Jones hat-trick and another from Owain Jones, whilst a Lee Jenkins header was enough to secure all three points at The Rock in October.

This will be Aber’s 999th match in the Cymru Premier, with the 1000th coming on Tuesday night at home to Haverfordwest County – the first of a double header against the Bluebirds with the return match in two weeks at Bridge Meadow.

Its another Friday night under the lights at Park Avenue and tickets are available at £7 to Adults, £4 to Concessions with Under 16’s free!

Corbs: “Thank You for the Fantastic Support”

24/1/2022

Aber Town Manager Antonio Corbisiero took time out over the weekend to express gratitude to the forty or so loyal Black and Green supporters at Penybont who stayed loud and loyal despite a disappointing result.

“Thank you to the supporters who turned up to Penybont away for the fantastic support for the Club and for us, with the return to football.

Unfortunately it wasn’t the result that we wanted, but we can’t thank you enough for continuing to support the players and the staff throughout the whole game, and for staying behind after, to clap and to sing to the boys as we were coming off the pitch.”

The supporters continued to sing for fully five minutes after the final whistle and Corbs hopes that their loyalty can inspire the team next week:

“Hopefully that gave the boys motivation to realise that the fans are 100% committed and behind them, and I firmly believe that we can look forward to the game with Cefn Druids next week and get the 3 points we vitally need.”

Aber Town host Cefn Druids on Friday night in the JD Cymru Premier (KO 8pm) and a similar level of support will help the Back and Greens to get a positive result:

“A massive thank you from myself and the coaching staff and the players for your continued support and we look forward to hearing the drum and the songs being sung down at Park Ave next Friday”.
