Aberystwyth Town FC are delighted to announce the signing of right back Dylan Rees from Cardiff City, and the promotion of Under 19s Squad Players Dan Hopton and Sion Ewart to the First Team Squad. Pembrokeshire based Rees is an energetic right-sided defender who spent a decade with the Cardiff Bluebirds. He signed a first year scholarship deal with City four years ago, before earned a professional contract in May 2015, going on to score the winner for Cardiff in a pre season friendly at Carmarthen that summer. Dylan had spent eight years making progress through the Cardiff City Academy, while he completed Btec qualifications equating to two A’ Levels plus his level two coaching badge. Dylan played regular under-21 team football until his release from Cardiff last year. A former Ysgol Greenhill School pupil, Dylan started playing for Tenby AFC before joining City. He travelled regularly from West Wales to Cardiff for a number of seasons before taking up a Bluebirds’ football scholarship and moving to be closer to the club. In other Squad news, Youth Team Players Dan Hopton and Sion Ewart have signed First Team forms, and Will Bell have left the Club permanently to rejoin Bala Town. Aberystwyth Town FC thanks Will for his service and wishes him all the best at Maes Tegid. Welsh Premier Development League Cup Group Stage
Sunday 29th January Merthyr Town 0 Aberystwyth Town 1 Aber Town's Under 19s travelled to Merthyr on Sunday to play their third game in the League Cup group stage, hoping to get the 3 points that would all but guarantee a place in the semi-finals, writes Gwion ap Dafydd. It was the visitors who started the game on the front foot, creating a few chances but weren’t able to test the Merthyr Town goalkeeper. Aber were rewarded for their bright start just over 10 minutes into the game, when Harri Horwood won the ball just inside the opposition’s half, played the ball forward to Geoff Kellaway, who moved the ball on to Liam Doherty. He cut inside the last defender and drove the ball across the keeper into the bottom left corner of the goal. Horwood and Jack Rimmer both narrowly missed chances to double Aber’s lead as the home side started to get a foothold on the game. But, thanks to some good keeping by Oliver Farebrother in goal, the score remained 1-0 at half time. Merthyr came out strongly in the second half and tested Farebrother in goal a few times, before Aber almost went 2-0 up through Liam Doherty, but his volley was saved by the keeper, who recovered, and pulled off another point blank save to deny Horwood. The home side threw everything at Aber in an attempt to find an equaliser, but luck was on the visitors’ side as Merthyr struck the crossbar 3 times in the last 10 minutes of the match. However, there was still time for one more chance for the Martyrs, but they were denied yet again by Farebrother, who got down quickly to his left to tip the ball around the post and ensure that Aber picked up all 3 points. Aber's line up was: Oliver Farebrother, Tomos Evans, Siôn Ewart, Daniel Hopton, Carwyn Morgan, Geoff Kellaway, Harri Horwood, Jack Rimmer, Alex Davies, Guto Havard, Liam Doherty. Subs Dafydd Morgan, Josh Crowl and Josh Abbott. |
