Aberystwyth Town 2 v 2 Port Talbot Town
Corbettsports Welsh Premier League Friday 13th March (ko 7.45pm) A bumper crowd of 463, helped by the ever successful student deal, were treated to a thrilling match as Aberystwyth Town came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Port Talbot Town. It was the visitors who had the best of the first half, the first shot easily saved by Aber goalkeeper, Mike Lewis, before Chris Jones blasted a shot over the bar from distance. The home side fought back and came close to taking the lead from two Ross Stephens set pieces. The first, a corner, was headed just over by Luke Sherbon and then Mark Jones was unable to squeeze in a free-kick at the back post. Aber were left to rue their missed chances as Port Talbot broke and Luke Bowen rounded the 'keeper to fire the Steelmen into a 25th minute lead. Port Talbot could've doubled their lead but Mike Lewis kept the Black and Greens in the game with an outstanding double save, first denying Keiran Williams and then Lee Surman at close range. Both sides saw acrobatic efforts miss the target as an enthralling first half was brought to a close. The second half got off to the worst possible start for Aber as they conceded after just 4 minutes, Chad Bond capitalising on a charged down goal kick to double Port Talbot's lead. Encouraged by the rocking Dias Stand, the home side forged a way back into the game, Craig Williams finishing off an excellent move to halve the defecit. Aber continued to press relentlessly for 20 minutes and were unlucky not to equalize as Stephen Wright headed just over. All the pressure finally payed off as Port Talbot keeper, Steve Cann, brought down Mark Jones in the box, the resulting penalty confidently dispatched by Craig Williams to equalize. It was Aberystwyth who were on top for the final 15 minutes as Mark Jones, Craig Williams, Stephen Wright and Stuart Jones came agonizingly close to snatching all three points at the death. An evenly matched contest and an electric atmosphere under the lights proved a good advert for the league. As the race for 2nd heats up, Aberystwyth head to Newtown next week in search of a win. Report by Tomos Ings Ahead of Aber's crucial WPL game at home to Port Talbot Town, Manager Ian Hughes is calling on Black and Green supporters to create an electric atmosphere at Park Avenue tomorrow night.
"I'm really looking forward to a game under the lights at Park Avenue,"Hughes told atfc.org.uk, "and the Players can't wait for the match to start." Town's Manager is positive a raucous crowd on Friday can have a major influence on proceedings: "Our Fans should not underestimate the importance of them cheering the Players on on Friday." "Any Footballer will tell you they feed off the atmosphere the fans create, and ours are no different. Invariably the boys play better with a big crowd fully behind them, so please make your support heard on Friday night!" Friday night's match at home to Port Talbot, boosted by a Student Promotion, kicks off at 7.45pm. Aberystwyth Town v Port Talbot Town
Corbettsports Welsh Premier League Friday 13th March (ko 7.45pm) Aberystwyth Town will be hoping that Friday the 13th turns out to be lucky for them in two days’ time, as they host the Steelmen of Port Talbot Town in another mouth watering Championship Conference WPL match. Following last week’s unlucky defeat at home to Airbus in the Welsh Cup Quarter Finals The Black and Greens are now free to focus entirely on the Challenge of securing a Top Two finish for the first time in their history – a target the Players are certainly good enough to achieve, having spent a good deal of the season in just that position. The competition from Airbus and Bala is fierce, but Aber’s key matches will take place at Park Avenue, starting on Friday night. Port Talbot’s form dipped worryingly as they lost their first three matches in the Top Six, but after Manager Bernard McInally’s departure they rallied to beat Newtown 4-0 two weeks ago, taking them up to fifth place in the WPL just below Aber. Since then Andy Dyer has been named as Permanent Manager and Friday will be his first game in charge. Aber for their part report a clean bill of health and Manager Ian Hughes will be glad to welcome back Ross Stephens to the Squad, who last week was Cup tied, as Chris Venables sits out the last game of his suspension on Friday. A terrific End of Term Atmosphere is guaranteed by a Student Promotion which sees Aberystwyth University Students admitted for £2 and treated to a complimentary Hot Dog. Kick off is at 7.45pm - there's no better place to start your last Friday night of term, than at Park Avenue! Aberystwyth Town's home game in the Corbettsports Welsh Premier League against Airbus UK Broughton has been chosen as S4C's live game of the week, to be featured on Clwb. Consequently the match has been moved from Saturday afternoon to Sunday 29th March, with a 1pm kick off. The WPL Development game at home to Prestatyn due to be held at Park Avenue on the 29th will now be either relocated, or postponed. For the second time in as many rounds, Aberystwyth Town’s Welsh Cup fate lay in the hands of the footballing Gods after ending 120 minutes of action with the scores level, writes Matthew Wallace. But there were to be no repeat of the heroics witnessed at Holywell as Town bowed out of the competition after losing 4-2 on penalties. The game had to be decided from 12 yards out after the sides ended extra time level 1-1 with both goals coming in the extra 30 minutes.
Despite the obvious disappointment in leaving the competition in such a manner, Assistant Manager Wyn Thomas told Aber Town's Youtube Channel that he was happy with the level of performance the side put in: “I think we did enough to win it, but it was a disappointment to lose. We did well up in Holywell with the penalties so we were confident enough going into it.” After a somewhat drab 90 minutes, the game exploded into life in the added half an hour. The Seasiders grabbed the initiative in the 93rd minute when Craig Williams gave the hosts the lead, only to be immediately pegged back from the head of Ryan Wignall who received his marching orders moments later. There was yet more drama to come as Lewis again proved his penalty saving credentials with a top save against Tom Field. “When we went 1-0 up with Craig Williams, I thought that was it and that we could shut up shop. Although it’s disappointing to give a goal away and get to penalties, we’ll move on.” With the club out of the cup now, there is nothing to distract Ian Hughes men from completing a historic campaign and claiming that second place that all associated with the club are hoping they can achieve. “We’ve got the league to concentrate on now, we’re fighting for that second place and that automatic European spot now. The team we’ve got here, we’ll push them on and drive them on. The few games we’ve got left now, hopefully we can win enough to get that place.” Town move on when they return to action next Friday night at Park Avenue with a tie against Port Talbot Town who have recently appointed a new manager in the form of experienced campaigner Andy Dyer. “Port Talbot are a very good side, they work hard for one another. Yes it’ll be difficult. But I’m sure our lads can up our game and bring three points home.” The game against Port Talbot, Park Avenue's first Fab Friday game since November, is expected to attract a big crowd, and the game kicks off at 7.45pm.
