Welsh Cup Semi Final Sunday 8th April (ko 12pm) Aberystwyth Town v Newtown at Maes Tegid, Bala The details of this season’s JD Welsh Cup Semi-Finals have been announced this afternoon by the Football Association of Wales. Connah’s Quay Nomads and Bangor City will meet at the Corbett Sports Stadium in Rhyl on Saturday 7th April. Kick-off will be at 19:35, and the game will be televised live by broadcast partners S4C. The sides, who met in the 1998 Final, have already clashed in cup action this season, Nomads knocking Bangor out of the Nathaniel MG Cup 2-0 thanks to two late goals from Michael Wilde and Callum Morris. It will be the first time the sides have met in the JD Welsh Cup since Bangor won 2-0 on Deeside in the Fourth Round back in 2013. You have to go further back for the last time that Newtown and Aberystwyth met in the Cup, the Seasiders edging a Third Round Replay 1-0 back in 1995/96. The two will meet this year at Bala Town’s Maes Tegid on Sunday 8th April, in a Midday kick-off which will be streamed live on the Sgorio Facebook page, and on the S4C website. The mid-Wales derby clash is sure to be highly competitive, as both teams chase a place in Welsh football’s showpiece game for the second time in recent years, Newtown having made the final in 2015, and Aberystwyth having done so the year before. It is the first time that a Welsh Cup semi-final will have been held in Bala, who won the competition for the first time in their history last season with a 2-1 victory over The New Saints. Stats Bangor are the most decorated side still left in the competition, having won the trophy 8 times, including three times in a row from 2008-2010 under current Aberystwyth boss Neville Powell. Nomads’ only previous final appearance was that 1998 defeat to the Citizens, while Aber’s one and only Cup win was in 1900. Newtown are two-time JD Welsh Cup winners, winning the second ever playing of the competition in 1878/79, and also in 1894/95. Article courtesy of www.faw.cymru JD Welsh Premier League
Saturday 10th March (2:30p.m Kick Off) Newtown v Aberystwyth Town Aberystwyth Town will look to continue their recent fine run of form as they travel to face Mid Wales rivals Newtown at Latham Park on Saturday afternoon. Aber are unbeaten in four games in all competitions, most recently booking a place in the JD Welsh Cup semi-finals after a brilliant 3-1 away victory at Carmarthen on Tuesday night. The black and greens will now look to close to within 3 points of the Robins in the league table with a victory on Saturday afternoon. Aber manager Nev Powell was ecstatic with his side's performance as they stormed into the Welsh cup semi-finals on Tuesday evening at Richmond Park. In an interview with Aber Town's YouTube channel, Powell commented "I'm thoroughly delighted with the lads, after a long trip down to Carmarthen they've shown what they can do, and they thoroughly deserve their place in the semi-finals". He went on to add, "going forward we were excellent, and we're scoring goals freely in most of our games at the moment". One man who deserves special praise after another superb performance in midweek is striker John Owen, who appears to be playing with supreme confidence following his selection for Wales' C Team squad to face England at Jenner Park in a few weeks' time. The Criccieth cracker netted another long range strike on Tuesday night and played a big part in assisting Town's third goal of the evening scored by Malcolm Melvin, and the Aber faithful will hope for more of the same from the front man this weekend. Saturday's hosts Newtown will also enter the game full of confidence, after defeating Llandudno in the Welsh cup on Tuesday night to set up a mouthwatering semi-final clash with Nev Powell's side in early April. Chris Hughes' team currently lie six points above Aber in the league table, having won two and lost two of their last four games in all competitions. The sides have already met twice this season, with Newtown running out 4-0 winners back in September, before Aber turned the tables by winning 3-0 at Park Avenue in November. In what promises to be a fantastic battle between the Mid Wales rivals, kick off at Latham Park is at 2:30 p.m. Aber's players will no doubt hope to be roared on by their vociferous away supporters as they look to climb up the JD Welsh Premier League table. JD Welsh Cup Quarter Final Tuesday 6th March Carmarthen Town 1 Aberystwyth Town 3 Goals from Joe Phillips (22), John Owen (68) and Malcolm Melvin (71 mins) eased the Black and Greens through to the Welsh Cup Semi Finals last night, ensuring an away win at Carmarthen who despite pulling one goal back through Liam Thomas (73 minutes) could not muster another great escape. Neville Powell's men now face the thrilling prospect of a Welsh Cup Semi Final against mid Wales rivals Newtown over the weekend of April 7th/8th. Following Saturday's postponement of the original date Manager Neville Powell's most pressing task which was to ensure that all his Players were available for the hastily rearranged date, and credit must be given to the First Team who made it to South West Wales en masse and ensured that Town could field an unchanged eleven. Carmarthen made a lively start with Clayton Green lobbing over the bar and Liam Thomas bringing a save out of Mullock: Aber responded when Declan Walker curled a shot over from Ashley Young's corner. Young made a superb defensive block to deny Ceri Morgan a clear chance but then the visitors made the breakthrough when another corner from Young was glanced home by Phillips for a crucial opener which put Aber's vocal tifosi into raptures. A rather cautious game ensued after the harem scarem of last week, with both sides struggling to find a rhythm, and chances were restricted to Ryan Wade finding the roof of the net with a cute lob, Tom Owens firing a shot just wide and Chris Mullock doing well to gather Green's cross, and Aber found themselves ahead at the break by 1-0. Into the second half, Dwayne Coultress' early shot glanced wide and Kieran Lewis lobbed over as the hosts tried to make a game of it, but once again Walker troubled the Carmarthen goal with a glancing header from Phillips' deep cross. With the home defence tiring John Owen started to display his dazzling skills and a backheel from the Criccieth cracker set up Matthew Jones for a low shot which Lewis deflected goalbound, and Lewis Thomas in the home goal pulled off a superb save. Then at the three quarter mark Owen turned his marker at the edge of the area and angled a low drive into the far corner for a stunning strike to double Aber's lead. Three minutes later the visiting fans were disco dancing in dreamland as Owen did brilliantly to feed Phillips and his crossfield ball was perfect for Melvin to fire a beautiful 30 yard drive into the net for 3-0. The hosts inevitably brought Aber right back to earth by getting a goal back two minutes later with Thomas firing home from close range, and with the Old Gold hitting incessant long high balls into box the pressure was on. Walker did head over for Town, and Melvin brought a diving save from Thomas, and with Craig Hobson's arrival as sub the Black and Greens had a strong header at both ends of the pitch. Aber were relieved to see a Carmarthen goal chalked off on 80 minutes for offside but from that point on they defended well and ensured that the ball spent most of the six minutes of injury time upfield, and David Morgan's final whistle ensured that Neville Powell's Aber had booked a Welsh Cup Semi Final place with something to spare. Aber's fifth Welsh Cup Semi Final of the Welsh Premier era (following previous appearances in 1997,2001, 2009 and 2014) gives the Club a huge end of season boost and the tie against Newtown, at a venue yet to be decided gives Neville Powell the chance to dream of an historic fourth Welsh Cup Final victory. Oh and who do Aber play next? Why, Newtown of course, at Latham Park on Saturday with a 2.30pm kick off. After last night's success the Black and Greens will be happy travellers at the weekend. JD Welsh Cup – Quarter Final
Tuesday 6th March (8p.m Kick Off) Carmarthen Town v Aberystwyth Town Aberystwyth Town will look to advance to their first Welsh Cup semi-final in four years, as they face Carmarthen Town for the second time in nine days at Richmond Park on Tuesday evening. Aber battled to a hard-earned point in their JD Welsh Premier League game against the Old Gold last Sunday, despite shipping two late goals to Neil Smothers’ side, and will now look to go one better as they eye a place in the JD Welsh Cup semi-finals. Aber manager Nev Powell has a fantastic Welsh Cup record, and will be looking to reach his sixth semi-final in nine seasons as a manager in the competition. Powell, who won the trophy as manager of Bangor City in three consecutive seasons between 2008 and 2010, has only failed to make the quarter final stage of the competition three times in ten years as a Welsh Premier League manager; an astounding record when considering the standard of competition for the trophy each season. Indeed, he recently admitted himself that he has a certain romance with the competition after his side’s brilliant victory away at Cardiff Met in the 4th round back in January. In an interview after that game, Powell commented “I just love the Welsh Cup, and I remember going 28 games undefeated in the competition as manager of Bangor, so I don’t see why we can’t go all the way with Aber”. Supporters of the black and greens can only hope that the manager sprinkles some of his Welsh Cup magic on Richmond Park Tuesday night as his side look to book their place in the last four of the competition. Aber will be hopeful that striker Craig Hobson has recovered from illness in time for Tuesday’s game, after missing last weekend’s league clash at Richmond Park. The side will also be boosted by the fact that both Chris Mullock and Declan Walker made Sgorio’s “5 yr wythnos” after their standout performances last week, and by the inclusion of front man John Owen in Wales’ C Team squad to face England in an international match on March 20th at Barry’s Jenner Park. Tuesday’s hosts Carmarthen will also be instilled with confidence after their late comeback stunned Nev Powell’s side to earn a draw in last Sunday’s league clash between the sides. However, manager Neil Smothers won’t have the luxury of being able to pick former seasiders Mark Jones and Luke Bowen due to the pair being cup-tied in the competition, which is undoubtedly a blow for the hosts. In what is sure to be another humdinger of a game between the two sides, kick off at Richmond Park on Tuesday is at 8 p.m. Don’t let the big freeze put you off what is sure to be a fiery affair in the West Wales derby!
