David Steeds RIP (1938-2020)

27/5/2020

Aberystwyth Town Football Club is deeply saddened to record the death of one of its previous Directors and friend, David Steeds.

David was an International Politics Lecturer at the University of Wales Aberystwyth, and he originally got involved in local football supporting his two boys William and Daniel when they played in the Mini Minor League. David served that League well and when both boys started playing for Aberystwyth Town’s Youth and Reserves his support of those teams was unflinching. He acted as Taxi Driver, Linesman etc and his wisdom was always of use to those who ran the Teams.

When Aberystwyth Town FC became a Company Limited by Guarantee David became a Director. Not only was he a Director, but he together with Rhun Owens, Anthony Evans, David Evans and Donald Kane would spent two or three mornings a week at the Club sorting out the various facets of administration which was increasing considerably year on year. He was also an ever present at Tuesday night Board meetings where his good sense, advice and wit made him a very popular Director.

David was a people’s person and a good mixer, so all who met him at the Club enjoyed his company, and the occasional drink. He had lectured Donald Kane when the Chairman was a fresher at the University, and their friendship thrived over the years. Brian Pugh Jones together with David Hides loved him complimenting them on the matchday pitch, which was a day that David enjoyed.

He was an integral part in getting the University on board in 2002, when a project was launched to involve the Economics Department in their running of the Club, with their expertise and advice. However he will also be remembered by those who worked with him when Aberystwyth Town FC were researching a project to commemorate Players lost during the two Great Wars. David was an exceptional historian in his field and his lecture at the Club prior to the inauguration of the Memorial was greatly enjoyed by all. You can enjoy a clip of his lecture on Aber Town’s Youtube Channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Xu0XP1iPpw.

David had been unwell for some three years and had battled hard. We will miss him greatly, a true friend and a true gent.

Everyone at the Club extends their deepest sympathies to David’s widow Rhiannon, his sons William and Daniel, and their extended family.

Written by David’s great friend Anthony Evans.

Club Statement: 2019/20 Cymru Premier Season Curtailed

19/5/2020

The FAW has today announced that the 2019/20 Cymru Premier season has been curtailed.

Aberystwyth Town Football Club fully support and endorse the FAW statement (reproduced below), and are proud to have taken part in a consultation which lead to a decision taken in the wider interests of society, at a time of an unprecedented public health pandemic.

“The Football Association of Wales Board of Directors (the FAW Board) have today (19 May) ratified the recommendation of the National League Board and agreed to curtail the 2019/20 season for Tiers 1 to 4. The decision has been taken as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and in accordance with Welsh Government’s lockdown guidelines and measures.

The FAW Board took into consideration the health and safety of all those involved with these leagues. Furthermore, the FAW Board also considered the specific economic and financial impact of attempting to finish the season during the pandemic and therefore felt it was imperative not to risk the long-term financial stability of the leagues and their clubs.

It was also recognised that the JD Cymru Premier could not be concluded prior to the deadline set by UEFA for European competition entry. Clubs in the JD Cymru Premier, JD Cymru North, JD Cymru South and the Orchard Welsh Premier Women’s League were consulted on how the season should be concluded. The views and information provided by the clubs were communicated to the FAW National League Board and the FAW Board of Directors.

The FAW Board agreed that Tier 1 to 4 leagues would be curtailed and that an unweighted points per game method be applied to determine the final standings. As a consequence, the European Play-Offs in the JD Cymru Premier will not take place. As a result, the JD Cymru Premier and Orchard Welsh Premier Women’s League European competition nominations were determined as follows:

UEFA Champions League – Connah’s Quay Nomads (1st Place)
UEFA Europa League – The New Saints (2nd Place)
UEFA Europa League – Bala Town (3rd Place)
UEFA Women’s Champions League – Swansea City Ladies (1st Place)

UEFA will be formally notified of these nominations prior to the 25 May deadline. Finally, the FAW Board decided that the prize money for the JD Cymru Premier, JD Cymru North, JD Cymru South and the Orchard Welsh Premier Women’s League would be distributed in accordance to the final league positions after the points per game method was applied.

The FAW Board are yet to decide on promotion and relegation between leagues with a decision to be made in due course, taking into account full consideration of the FAW’s Pyramid Regulations”.
