Academy Product Jack Rimmer Steps Up to Black and Greens First Team Squad

28/6/2015

Picture
Aberystwyth Town FC are delighted to announce that Academy Product Jack Rimmer is joining the First Team Squad for 2015/16.

Jack is a Sixth Former at Ysgol Gyfun Penweddig and has an impeccable sporting background, having been invited to join Liverpool's Academy at age 10, Birmingham City's Academy at 11, and having trials at Stoke City at 14. He started playing for Padarn United before joining the very successful Aber United team, winning the Ian Rush Super Cup Under 11 age group in 2009, and finishing as runners up in 2010. Jack represented Central Wales in the Cymru Cup of 2013 and the Welsh National/Regional Development Squads in 2012 and 2013. He has also played for Penweddig and Ceredigion Schools throughout his School Years, and played for Central Wales Boys 2014 and again in 2015 where Jack captained the side.

Jack, a Centre Back or Midfielder by trade, has been with Bow Street since 2011 but importantly has also been part of Aberystwyth Town's Academy sides from the Under 12 Age Group onwards and was in the side that reached the Welsh Final in 2012.

He is also an accomplished golfer, as part of the Dyfed team that won Welsh schools championship 2014, and has represented Ceredigion Schools Athletics Squads several times in the 100m and 400m sprints.

Club Chairman Tony Bates said: "As a Club we are delighted to have signed Jack up on Contract. We are keen to retain a local cadre of Players in our First Team Squad, and this signing shows that our renowned Academy Structure is doing a superb job developing young talent, and providing a pathway for promising Footballers like Jack to access the Welsh Premier League."

Manager Ian Hughes added: 'It's been great to promote Jack to the First Team squad, he took part in numerous training sessions last season and impressed us every time. Having said that it's now the hard work starts with the challenge to first compete then cement his place in the first team.

In recent years we have seen many youngsters make their debuts. Alex Samuel has recently signed an extension to his professional contract with Swansea City and of course Tom Bradshaw has continued to create a good reputation in the Football League. Dafydd Carruthers and Liam Jacques both played last season for the Welsh Academies Squad and without Aberystwyth Town they wouldn't have been able to do this, so I'm sure they appreciate the importance of the Club in their development. Any aspiring young player should seriously consider us as their best option in developing their career."

Griff and Surms Can't Wait to Get Going

23/6/2015

Picture
Ian Hughes will go into the next campaign knowing that he has an excellent squad at his disposal and one of the best in the league, writes Matthew Wallace.

With the majority of the players that came within minutes of qualifying for European football last year resigning including top goalscorer Chris Venables and players’ player Luke Sherborn, Town last week added the reputable names of Rhys Griffiths and Lee Surman who between them have made over 600 appearances in the Welsh top flight.

Neither need much introduction to supporters of the Welsh Premier League. Rhys Griffiths is a goal scoring legend who has found the net 262 times in 368 appearances. He has won the Welsh Golden Boot in seven consecutive seasons and is a six time member of the Welsh Premier League team of the season.

Discussing the move, he stated. "There are plenty of things that made me want to sign. It's a club that I've had a lot of respect for over the years. It's a well run club run by good honest people. I've got history with some of the players and some good friends here. As a group of players even the ones I don't know come across as a good set of lads.”

Griffiths’ move sees him team up once again with Venables which looks set to become a partnership that has the potential to terrorise defences up and down the country. But speaking of any potential golden boot rivalry, Griffiths is certain there won’t be anything on that score.

“If I didn’t know him so well, I’d be a bit worried that I’d have to take over but I don’t feel like that at all. I just hope that between us we can get to the 45/50 goals a season mark. I don’t care if he gets 25 of them and I get 20, my main focus is on contributing to the team. The last thing I want to do is to stop Chris doing what he’s been doing but hopefully I can add to it and lay a couple on from him.”

The second of Town’s signings is defender Lee Surman. Having started his career at Swansea City, Surman has become one of the most established defenders in the league, amassing over 300 hundred appearances for both Llanelli and Port Talbot over the years. At 29 years old, he offers the club experience in an area of the field that Hughes looked to strengthen in order to improve on last year’s promise.

"I had a look at the squad and it wasn't too far off last season so we're looking to kick on this season and get some silverware.” Surman stated to ATFC.org.uk “I like to think that I’ve got plenty of experience and that can be a positive for the squad. I’m not one to rant and rave on the pitch and prefer to lead by example in a playing sense. If we tighten up a little at the back and keep the attacking philosophy that you had going forward last season, we could turn those draws and losses into wins. “

Both men join the club having played together at Port Talbot Town and previous to that Llanelli alongside a number of the club’s senior players including skipper Stuart Jones, Venables, Antonio Corbisiero and assistant manager Wyn Thomas. This previous experience was a big draw for both men in signing for the Seasiders.

“They are winners. They’ve got a winning mentality. They’ve won so much. I’ve played with Stuart in my early days with Swansea and at Llanelli so I’m hoping that’ll be a transition made with relative ease. Wyn has been involved in the league for a long time. I’ve enjoyed being around someone and a character like that as he’s always honest with his opinions. It doesn’t matter if he’s talking to a senior player or a youngster which is something I’m keen to pick up.”  was Surman’s response when quizzed on his new teammates.

Both players join Town with the same burning ambition as all around the club. After the bitter disappointment of final day heartbreak in consecutive seasons, the aim for both players this year is to propel Aber back to where they belong.

“I want to add some trophies and Aberystwyth is a good place to do it. Without sounding big headed but I've won enough individual but I'd like to add more team awards and team merits. I see no reason why we can’t get second place this year” Griffiths stated

Surman added, “We've got a great opportunity to get some silverware. I've been in two cup finals in this league and lost both of them so ultimately I haven't won anything yet so I want to change that. I'm really looking forward to get going."

All at atfc.org.uk would like to welcome both players to the club and thank them for their time after completing the signing.

Hughsey Chuffed to Sign Thomas

19/6/2015

Picture
Aberystwyth Town FC can reveal that Ian Hughes' latest signing is the legendary North Wales goalscorer Darren Thomas, also known as "Darren Bach" who joins from Caernarfon Town.

Manager Ian Hughes said: "Darren is a player I've worked with at Llangefni Town. He has Welsh Premier League experience, however that was a while ago. I am delighted to have signed him as he will give us options and flexibility this season. He's been the best player for the last three seasons in the Cymru Alliance and now Darren wants to prove that he is capable of playing at the highest level of domestic football in Wales. He has shown great loyalty to Caernarfon Town as other Welsh Premier League clubs have shown an interest in the past, so it's great to have him on board."

Darren, 28, is probably best known for his astonishing Welsh Cup goal for Caernarfon Town against The New Saints last December, which pipped Chris Venables to win Sgorio's Goal of the Month Award. The goal showcased Thomas's superb ball skills, pace and finishing prowess which Black and Green Supporters will be looking forward to seeing at Park Avenue next season.

Less well known is that Thomas, a Welsh speaker from Caernarfon, has twice played against Aber, with devastating results. In March 2008 he created the opener, then scored two more in Llangefni's 3-0 win at Cae Bob Parry. Last summer he notched two more for Caernarfon in a Pre Season Friendly at the Oval, giving him a total of four goals in two games against the Black and Greens.

Operating as an attacking midfielder or striker, Darren joined Caernarfon from Porthmadog in January 2013 and became a Cult Hero at the Oval scoring 31 Huw Gray Alliance goals from 52 appearances. He also scored two WPL hat tricks in a total of 13 goals in 30 games for Llangefni in 2007/8, to add to one solitary sub appearance for the Cofis on 2005/6.

Rhys Griffiths and Lee Surman Sign for Aber

18/6/2015

Picture
Aberystwyth Town are delighted to announce the double signing of Rhys Griffiths and Lee Surman, who both join from Port Talbot Town.

Rhys and Lee both signed Contracts with Club Chairman Tony Bates and Assistant Manager Wyn Thomas in Swansea this evening.

Manager Ian Hughes said: "I am delighted to bring Rhys to the club, his record speaks for itself and I am looking forward to working with him. His infectious winning attitude will be priceless in the dressing room as we push to sustain and improve on what has been a good two seasons. He offers a goal threat and will fit in well to the system we play."

"The defence has been somewhere I have needed to address, we conceded too many goals last season. However in Lee I believe we've got one of the best centre halves in the League, which will mean we will be in a better position to defend our box next season. He is a left footed Centre Half who will give us balance. Lee along with Rhys will give us a more physically capable team, which is another area I've wanted to address.

We look forward to welcoming them both for Pre Season training which starts in a couple of weeks."

Rhys is probably the best known Welsh Premier League Player, due to his astonishing strike rate. He is second in the all-time list of WPL scorers, having netted 262 goals from 368 appearances. He finished as top scorer in seven consecutive seasons and was included in the Welsh Premier League's team of the season six times. A three-time winner of the league's Player of the Year award, Griffiths was capped six times by Wales at semi-professional level.

Griffiths combines his role as a part-time footballer with being a firefighter in the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. A Welsh speaker from North Cardiff, Rhys played for Cwmbrân Town, Haverfordwest County, Carmarthen Town, Port Talbot Town and Llanelli before joining Football League club Plymouth Argyle in 2012 on a one-year contract to become a professional footballer for the first time at the age of 32. Griffiths made 17 appearances in league and cup competitions for Argyle scoring 3 goals, then moved to Newport County in February 2013, where he made a further ten appearances before leaving the Exiles to return to Port Talbot Town.

Lee Surman is another key signing for the Black and Greens. An influential and inspirational Central Defender, he is sure to strengthen Town's defensive unit next season. A major figure at the Genquip, Lee re-joined Port Talbot Town in January 2013 after 18-months away from the club with Llanelli. He had joined Llanelli from Port Talbot Town in June 2011 after seven seasons at the GenQuip Stadium, and in his previous spell at Town, Surman became a leading figure in helping the club achieve European qualification and finish runner-up in the Welsh Cup.

He is widely regarded as one of the league's finest defenders and brings with him a wealth of experience and leadership skills. A former Swansea City apprentice , he is a Wales Under-23 and full semi-professional international, who skippered the Welsh team on several occasions. Aged 29, Lee has already made 304 WPL Appearances, scoring 9 times.

On behalf of everyone at Aberystwyth Town, Atfc.org.uk extends a very warm welcome to Rhys and Lee to Park Avenue.
