Aber to face Brickfield Rangers in pre-season friendly

31/7/2018

Aberystwyth Town have added an away fixture to their pre-season schedule, as they travel to face Welsh National League Premier Division side Brickfield Rangers on Tuesday, July 31st in a 7p.m Kick Off.

The black and greens were due to host Brickfield at Park Avenue a fortnight ago, but the fixture was unable to be fulfilled.

The seasiders will now travel to the Wrexham area to face the Rangers a week on Tuesday, as they continue their preparations and build match fitness towards the start of the JD Welsh premier League season on August 10th.

Haverfordwest County 2-1 Aberystwyth Town: Match Report

30/7/2018

A youthful Aberystwyth Town side fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Welsh League contenders Haverfordwest County at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium on Saturday afternoon; less than 24 hours after the black and greens lost 1-0 in an entertaining game against National League North outfit AFC Telford United at Park Avenue on Friday evening. Danny Williams bagged a brace for Haverfordwest in a game where Geoff Kellaway's deflected goal had seen the seasiders pull level for a brief spell in the game.

Saturday's hosts started the brightest as former seasiders Elliot Scotcher and Ricky Watts dominated the early possession, and they were very nearly in front after 15 minutes when Tim Hicks' effort was cleared off the goal line. Soon after the hosts had another opportunity as Watts tested youngster Alex Pennock in goal. Despite seeing little of the ball, the young seasiders defended resolutely, with Lee Jenkins and Carwyn Morgan looking assured in the central defensive positions. Aber gradually worked their way into the game as Harri Rowe and Tom Evans both provided width on the flanks, linking up well with Geoff Kellaway and Nashawn Blake. But on 30 minutes, the hosts took a well deserved lead as Scotcher's rasping effort was well saved by Pennock, only for Danny Williams to reach the ball first and tap home the rebound to make it 1-0. The black and greens continued to try and play their way out of the back, with Liam Berner and Ben Davies showing excellent glimpses in central midfield, however it was the hosts who almost doubled their lead before the break as Scotcher saw his free kick rattle against the crossbar.

Aber started the second half in brighter fashion, with substitutes Steff Gittins and Harry Cottam having an instant impact on the side. On the stroke of the hour mark, the black and greens found an equaliser as Lee Jenkins strode into central midfield before seeing his shot deflect off Geoff Kellaway and into the back of the net to make it 1-1. But soon after, the hosts were back in control as Danny Williams played a one-two with Martin Carroll before unleashing an unstoppable effort into the top corner to make it 2-1. Try as they might, Aber were unable to find a way back into the game despite enjoying positive spells of possession, and the Bluebirds almost netted a third before the end as Steff Williams was denied by the offside flag.

It proved to be a stern test for many of Aber's most promising youngsters, but certainly an experience they will take plenty away from as they continue their progression and development ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Aberystwyth Town 0-1 AFc Telford United: Match Report

28/7/2018

Aberystwyth Town continued their pre-season preparations as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of National League North outfit AFC Telford United in a highly competitive friendly match at Park Avenue on Friday evening. James McQuilkin's 59th minute goal was enough to see the Bucks to victory, in a game where the black and greens gained themselves more quality game-time ahead of the start of the JD Welsh Premier League season on the 10th of August.

The visitors started the game the brightest, setting a high tempo from the word go with Henry Cowans and James McQuilkin both looking lively in the final third of the pitch. Abe slowly began to find their feet in the game, with midfield trio Declan Walker, Jack Rimmer and Paulo Mendes breaking through the lines to earn the home side a succession of corners that were well defended by the Bucks. The first meaningful chance of the game fell to former Newtown defender Shane Sutton (now captain of AFC Telford), who's powerful header was cleared off the line by Declan Walker. Soon after, Aber goalkeeper Leigh Jenkins was forced into action as he saved smartly with his right foot to deny Daniel Udoh's low strike. The visitors continued to enjoy the lion's share of possession, but Aber stood firm - looking organised and cohesive in defence with Ryan Wollacott standing out once more. On 27 minutes, Andre Brown saw his left-footed strike go inches wide of the far post for the visitors, before Aber created their first meaningful chance when Paulo Mendes' flicked header sailed narrowly wide of the Bucks' goal.

Aber started the second half in brighter fashion, with Chris Mullock and Lee Jenkins being introduced, and immediately carved themselves an opening after Paulo Mendes was tripped on the edge of the penalty area; only for the resulting free kick to be struck over the crossbar by Declan Walker. On 58 minutes, the visitors created their best chance of the game as Cowans cut into the penalty area before curling his effort narrowly over the crossbar. However, they were soon ahead in the game as James McQuilkin latched on to a loose ball in the penalty area before side footing the ball beyond Mullock to make it 0-1. As we so often see in friendly matches, a host of substitutions were to follow, with both sides making wholesale changes. The black and greens continued to search for an opening as Nashawn Blake threatened from the right flank whilst Joe Phillips began to see more of the ball after moving into the number 10 position. But the visitors stood strong, with goalkeeper Wycherley only being called into action once with a fine low save to his right hand side. Telford almost doubled their lead as the game entered additional time, with Cowley inches away from getting on the end of Morgan-Smith's cross, but McQuilkin's strike would remain the only one separating the sides in an entertaining match at Park Avenue.

It was a stern test for Aber's ever-progressing side against the National League North outfit, who certainly had more game sharpness than the black and greens; with their season starting in 7 days' time on 4th August. Town will be pleased to get more match fitness under their belts and will now turn their attentions to this afternoon's pre-season friendly with Haverfordwest County before facing Brickfield Rangers on Tuesday evening.

Aberystwyth Town v AFC Telford United: Match Preview

24/7/2018

Aberystwyth Town will continue their build up to the start of the JD Welsh Premier League season in three weeks' time as they face National League North outfit AFC Telford United in a pre-season friendly at Park Avenue on Friday evening.

The black and greens started their pre-season schedule last weekend with a 1-1 draw at home to Halesowen Town, with Rio Ahmadi grabbing a goal on his Park Avenue debut. There were a number of impressive performances during last weekend's friendly match, from both Aber's more experienced players and some of Town's fresher faces. The club have also been boosted by three pieces of transfer news this week, with the announcements that Ryan Wollacott, Joe Phillips and Lee Jenkins have all committed their futures at Park Avenue for the forthcoming season.

Friday night's opponents AFC Telford United are a National League North outfit, managed by Gavin Cowan and captained by former Newtown central defender Shane Sutton. Aber’s links with the Shropshire side go way back to the days when former black and greens manager Tomi Morgan used to play for the New Bucks. They also have a rich history as FA Cup giantkillers – beating Brentford and Crewe Alexandra back in 2003 to reach the fourth round of the competition! The New Bucks have already impressed in pre-season, beating Wrexham 3-1 in a friendly match last weekend.

In what is sure to be a stern test for the black and greens, kick off at Park Avenue on Friday night is at 8 pm. Admission costs £5 for adults, £3 concessions and £1 for u16's. Friday night football is back under the Park Avenue lights, so come on down and enjoy another competitive contest!

In addition to Friday evening's fixture, the black and greens will travel to face Haverfordwest County on Saturday afternoon for another pre-season friendly match. Kick off at Bridge Meadow is at 2:30pm as Aber come up against a familiar face in Wayne Jones (Wolvesy), who was Assistant Manager at Park Avenue between June 2016 and 2018, and is now First Team Coach with the Bluebirds.

Local starlet Lee Jenkins is latest to put pen to paper for 2018/19 season

22/7/2018

Picture
berystwyth Town Football Club are excited to announce that local starlet Lee Jenkins has re-signed with the club for the 2018/19 season.

Ceredigion-based Lee played a pivotal role in the success of Bari Morgan's u19's double-winning squad last season, and has produced a number of impressive performances for Aber's development sides in recent seasons. Despite being just 16 years old, he already stands at 6 foot tall, and is a no-nonsense defender with a physical presence who also possesses the technical ability to play the ball to feet.

Lee was selected to play for Wales' u18 School Boys side last season, where he excelled in the central defensive position against old enemy England. He was on the fringes of Aber's first team last season, and will undoubtedly be pushing for a place in the starting eleven this season should his excellent form continue.

Everyone at the club is excited to welcome Lee back to Park Avenue for the new season and look forward to seeing him play a part in Aber's pre-season friendly against AFC Telford United at Park Avenue on Friday evening.

Aber jubilant as starman Joe Phillips commits for 2018/19 season

22/7/2018

Aberystwyth Town Football Club are delighted to announce that attacking midfielder Joe Phillips has re-signed with the club for the 2018/19 season.

Joe joined the club last summer, having scored 16 goals in 46 appearances for Stourport Swifts the previous season, and made an instant impact at Park Avenue. He got off to a flying start with the black and greens, scoring against Hull City in a pre-season friendly and went on to make a total of 29 JD Welsh Premier League appearances during the 2017/18 season, scoring 5 goals in the process.

Joe's most memorable moment of his Aber career undoubtedly came last January, as he scored a perfect hat-trick (header, right foot, left foot) to help the seasiders thump second placed Connah's Quay Nomads 4-2 in the final game before the league split, which you can view again here.

Known for his pace and trickery, Aber's starman is most famous for playing on the right wing, but can fill a variety of roles along the front line due to his brilliant ability with both feet. In addition to his league contribution last season, Joe also scored three pivotal goals during Town's run to the JD Welsh Cup Final with a brace against Bala Town and a glancing header away at West Wales rivals Carmarthen Town at the Quarter Final stage.

Everyone at the club would like to extend a warm welcome back to Joe for the new season, and you can see him in action in Aber's next pre-season friendly match at home to AFC Telford United on Friday evening at Park Avenue.
