Penybont Ladies 1 Aberystwyth Town Ladies 1
Welsh Women’s League (WWL) Sunday 10th September 2017 A late equaliser from midfielder Steph Land meant Aber took a point from their opening league fixture of the season but manager Kevin Jenkins admitted after the match “It should have been three,” writes Steven Brookes. After a long wait, the Black and Greens headed down to South Wales to get their league campaign underway. In the difficult weather conditions, it was the home team that started the better of the two sides and it was them that broke the deadlock early on. Bethan Davies’s free kick from out wide managed to beat Katie Christopher in the Aber goal with a little help from the wind which seemed to carry the ball in to the far corner of the net. Both teams struggled to create any clear-cut chances and a frustrating half for the away team ended with the home side ahead. Aber played a lot better in the second half and looked the most likely to score next. After a few off-target attempts and a few shots that were comfortably saved it by the Penybont goalkeeper, it was forward, Naomi Evans who came closest to levelling the scores. An excellent strike from the edge of the area hit the underside of the bar but unfortunately for her and Aber the ball bounced out and was cleared. It was starting to look like Aber were going to start the season with a defeat but the hard work did eventually pay off and the Black and Greens finally got the goal they deserved when Steph Land’s curling shot hit the inside of the post and rolled over the line to level the scores. Aber didn’t want just a draw and pushed forward for the winner, dominating the final stages but time wasn’t on their side and the match ended level. Aberystwyth Town Ladies’ next match is away to Briton Ferry who have played a match more than Aber and in those two games have scored a massive total of 22 goals. Sunday 10th September Welsh Premier Development League (South) Haverfordwest U19s 0 Aberystwyth U19s 3 Aberystwyth U19’s continued their fine start to the season with an excellent 3-0 victory away to Haverfordwest, writes Assistant Manager Iwan Roberts. The first half was a tight affair with both teams knocking on the door trying to get a break through, Aber did however have the best of the chances, Tom Evans starting in a more attacking role proved to be a real thorn in the Haverfordwest defence as his relentless desire to keep running created numerous problems all afternoon. The second half saw the Aber midfield of Matthew Jones, Jack Rimmer and Niall Coleridge get a firm hold of the game, and their dominance in a physical game paid off as Jack Rimmer coolly slotted home when his was put one on one with the keeper. Aber’s superior fitness really did start to show in the last quarter when Matthew Jones increased the lead with a lovely turn on the right hand side and delivered a lovely cross come shot which caught out the home keeper, Jones completed his man of the match performance with a driving run into the Haverfordwest box and drilled a powerful left foot shot into the bottom hand corner of the net. Aber boss Bari Morgan was pleased with the result and the performance “the boys again as a group have put in an excellent performance, plus a first clean sheet was an added bonus. We have had some very good individual performances, but what impressed me most was how we are performing as a team and a squad. There are still things to improve on and we mustn’t get carried away as the next two games will be a real test for us, but we are full of confidence and belief”. Aber have three homes games to come, starting with reigning champions Cambrian & Clydach on Sunday 17th followed by Swansea on 24th and then the First Round of the Welsh Cup against Ffostrasol on October 1st. Bolstered by the return of strikers Craig Hobson, John Owen and Luke Borrelli, Aber looked to make a positive start, but Manager Neville Powell's plans were thrown into disarray when Culshaw's reckless tackle on Kyle McCarthy earned the left back a straight red card with barely five minutes on the clock. Chris Baker fired over for the visitors but a tactical switch to move Kellaway and Owen up front improved Aber's game immensely and they went on to enjoy a purple patch from the quarter hour mark. Kellaway surged down the left but his cross just eluded Owen, before the selfsame Kellaway saw a near range lob tipped over by Will Fuller. Ryan Wollacott then headed just wide from Cledan Davies' corner, before Kellaway again surged to feed Owen who narrowly missed the target, ruffling the side netting instead. With Met's passing going astray Aber looked to be on top and Fuller again had to punch a rasping shot from Declan Walker wide, before palming on Owen cross to safety. As in previous games however the hosts were punished for failing to convert, as Met came back into things. Adam Roscrow curled a shot wide, Elliot Evans sent a free kick straight at Chris Mullock, and then disaster struck as impressive left back Edwards surged into the Aber box and his left wing cross was deflected past Mullock for a soft opener which was harsh on the hosts. The goal changed the game with Jordan Lam dancing past two home defenders before finding the side netting, Evans hitting the post and McCarthy missing from close range, and the Black and Greens were probably glad to hear the half time whistle having battled hard with ten men to make a game of it. The hosts created the first chance of the second half as Ashley Young released Kellaway, who burst forward before sending a low effort past the post. With Aber imposing a high press on the visitors defence things were looking hopeful and an even period ensued, with Evans twice denied by Mullock before Kellaway's goalbound back header drew an amazing tip over from Fuller, with home supporters howling for a penalty after an Aber player appeared to be hauled to the ground in the box. With the match in the balance the hosts were again punished as another soft cross from the right wing was deflected past Mullock by McKenna to double Met's advantage and kill the game. Borrelli brought yet another save from Fuller with a sweet volley, but back came Met with Adam Roscrow twice going close. Having made three subs Aber's nightmare day was completed as John Owen hobbled off to reduce Town to nine men, and from here they did well not to concede further, with Mullock denying Charlie Corsby and Evans again in injury time. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Aber this afternoon, and they will be hoping for better luck in front of goal, and elsewhere on the pitch, next week as they travel to Latham Park to face Newtown on Saturday 16th September (ko 2.30pm). Keep the faith! Aberystwyth Town FC can confirm the departure of midfielder Christian Langos. Christian joined the Club in August 2017, appeared as a trialist in pre-season, and became Aberystwyth Town's first Congolese player in his one WPL appearance, as a sub at Barry Town in the Black and Greens' WPL opener. He has previously represented Bangor City and Rhyl, having started out with Marine FC before joining Nev Powell at Bangor in 2015/6. The 23 year old winger has already made 48 WPL appearances. The Club thanks Christian for his service and wishes him all the best for the future. Nathaniel MG Cup Second Round Tuesday October 3rd (ko 8pm) Aberystwyth Town v Airbus UK Broughton Aberystwyth Town can confirm that their Nathaniel MG Cup Second Round Tie at home to Airbus UK Broughton will be held on Tuesday, October 3rd with an 8pm kick off. The Black and Greens won through to the Second Round with a 2-0 win at Caersws last Tuesday evening, while Airbus shocked JD Welsh Premier League side Cefn Druids with a 3-2 win after extra time at the Airfield. JD Welsh Premier League Saturday 9th September (ko 2.30pm) Aberystwyth Town v Cardiff Met Aber Town are looking forward to their first Saturday home game of 2017/8 with Cardiff Met the visitors to Park Avenue in 48 hours time. The Seasiders will be hoping for an improvement in fortunes after two consecutive 2-0 defeats in WPL games at home to Llandudno and away to Cefn Druids. Black and Green shoots of recovery were however apparent in last week's 2-0 League Cup win at Caersws, with midfielders Ashley Young and Jack Rimmer on target, and with three strikers back in contention Manager Neville Powell will have many more options at his disposal on Saturday afternoon. Forwards Craig Hobson, John Owen and Luke Borrelli were all ruled out of Town's last match, and although Malcolm Melvin is sidelined for a weeks with a cheekbone injury it is good to report that Town's injury crisis up front has passed. Cardiff Met go into the game as favourites after two wins from three have elevated them to third place in the Welsh Premier League, but Town will be looking for revenge after Met denied them a Top Six place with a victory on their last visit to Park Avenue last January, a result which had massive ramifications for both Clubs as 2016/7 progressed. Aber Town's Under 19s side showed their Senior counterparts the way last weekend with a 4-2 win away to Cardiff Met, so the scene is set for an intriguing tussle at Park Avenue. Kick off is at 2.30pm and admission will cost £7 for Adults, £4 for Concessions and £1 for Children. It's the place to be on a Saturday afternoon! |
