JD Cymru Premier Aberystwyth Town 0 Cardiff Met 1 Aber Town suffered last minute heartbreak for the second time in three league games as Emlyn Lewis’ 89th minute effort deflected past Man of the Match Gregor Zabret to earn all three points for Cardiff Met at an overcast Park Avenue yesterday evening. The Black and Greens came into the game in good heart following last weekend’s 9-0 Welsh Cup win over Aber Valley, and Jamie Veale sent a free kick past the post early on for the homesters. Zabret then parried a low shot by Adan Roscrow out for a corner. Jon Owen had to come off with a hamstring pull on nine minutes, before Zabret denied Tom Davies and Lewis Rees in quick succession. Harry Franklin headed wide from Matty Jones’ corner and as Aber’s prominent playmaker become more involved in the best of Town’s creative play he attracted repeated heavy challenges from the visitors, which resulted in Franklin being carried off with a nasty knee injury ten minutes before the break. Town’s Raul Correia had a shot blocked for a corner, then at the other end Rees sent in a great cross which evaded three Met players. Sub Alex Darlington warmed Alex Lang’s gloves with a twenty yard effort, Harry Owen had a shot blocked for Met, and Zabret made another good save to deny Roscrow, before palming Owen’s shot over, and in truth the home team were probably glad to reach half time goal less after a 45 when the visitors created more goalscoring chances. Owain Jones had an effort blocked, then sent another wide early into the second half, and a Jamie Veale 25 yard snapshot cannoned agonisingly off the post for Town with Aber inches away from taking the lead. Jack Rimmer sent in a useful cross gathered by Lang, and another Veale effort deflected for a goal kick with Aber looking good. Matt Chubb’s renowned long throw routine reared its head for Met with Aber clearing his repeated flings into the area, though Joe Evans did flash an effort past the post to show Met were also capable of creating chances from open play. Home defender Louis Bradford came desperately close to converting right on the goal line from Matty Jones’ free kick, then Correia created an opportunity for Sam Phillips to volley over. Roscrow then went on another fine run before drawing a great save from his nemesis Zabret, and Rees headed wide with the visitors finishing strongly. Zabret astonishingly touched another Met effort over the bar from point blank range, and Aber survived again. At the other end Owain Jones flicked over from Veale’s corner, then Zabret saved from Tom Price and Owen in quick succession, but the hosts’ pressure finally paid off when Lewis swivelled in the box to send in a shot which took a big deflection off a home defender to beat the heroic Zabret in goal. After a performance high on effort but low on goals Antonio Corbisiero’s men now have to pick themselves up for a mid Wales derby on Friday night, away to Newtown, and after the past few League results Black and Green supporters will be looking to Lady Luck to repay some debts at Latham Park. Kick off is at 7.45pm. Aberystwyth Town vs Cardiff Metropolitan University
JD Cymru Premier Saturday 11th September 5.15pm KO LIVE on Sgorio online The Seasiders return to league action on Saturday after last weekend’s exciting Welsh Cup match against Aber Valley FC. Although our visitors were on the wrong end of a 9-0 defeat (ATFC’s largest win in the Welsh Cup since 2003) their players and superb supporters were a credit to their club and all at Aberystwyth Town would like to wish them well for the rest of their season, and hope that we meet again sometime in the future! We are almost a quarter way through the first phase of league fixtures now, and although ATFC have suffered three successive narrow 1-0 defeats in the Cymru Premier, the results have not told the full story as performances have been encouraging. Cardiff Met will provide a stern test as always, and Christian Edwards’ side will arrive at Park Avenue in a confident mood as they are unbeaten in four games and progressed in the cup last weekend, dispatching Pontardawe Town away from home. Met currently sit 7th in a league table that is still taking shape; with 1 win, 2 draws and 1 defeat from their four games so far. They beat Penybont 3-2 in their last league outing following two successive 0-0 draws at Haverfordwest County & Bala Town. The return of Adam Roscrow was arguably one of the most significant moves of the summer – the prolific striker returning to the capital on loan from The New Saints having originally departed Cyncoed Campus in 2019 for AFC Wimbledon. Met’s squad also still includes stalwarts Emlyn Lewis, Chris Baker & Charlie Corsby, whilst former Aber loanee Tom Price arrived earlier this year from Swansea City. The two clubs have already met once this summer in a pre-season friendly back in July; Met taking a 2-0 victory on a day which also marked the return of supporters to Park Avenue following the relaxation of Covid restrictions. ATFC are back on the road after this game with Latham Park the venue next Friday (17th) for the much-anticipated Mid-Wales clash with Newtown! Saturday’s game will be broadcast on Sgorio’s Facebook page, but you can’t beat watching football live at Park Avenue so please come down and support the lads! Tickets are £7 for Adults / £4 for Concessions / Under 16’s free and please be aware that kick-off is at 5.15pm NOT the usual 2.30pm time. Aberystwyth Town Women 3 (E. Jones 1', A. Jenkins 26', L. Isaac 63') Barry Town United Ladies 1 (Trivett 46') On Matchday One in the all new Adran Premier season goals from Elin Jones (1 min), Amy Jenkins (26 mins) and Libby Isaac (63 mins) gave the Ceredigion the perfect start to what is sure to be an exciting season. Trivett did manage to pull a goal back for the South Wales side early in the second half but it was not enough to deny the hosts all three points. Aber started strong with an early goal from a corner, seeing newcomer Elin Jones score the first goal in the newly formed Adran Premier League. The Seasiders capitalised not long after with Amy Jenkins scoring from the penalty spot. Our visitors started the second half lively, putting the home side under a lot of pressure. Within just a few minutes, Barry reduced the score line with a well worked goal to make it 2-1. A flurry of substitutions for Aber added energy to the hosts side, which saw Libby Isaac set up for a 30 yd screamer to kill the game at 3-1. A fantastic performance from the Seasiders resulting in a much needed 3 points to start off the 2021-22 season. Thanks to all who came to support us today. We have missed you so much! We look ahead now to next weeks game, away to Cardiff City. Aber Line Up: F. Ashman (gk), L. Gwilt (B. Roberts 57'), E. Jones, K. Thomas (c), C. Copper, L. Isaac, H. Pusey (F. Evans 79'), F. Jenkins, J. Pugh, A. Jenkins (G. Jones 58'), R. Mathias Unused Subs: L. Walker, S. Evans by Steven Brookes Aberystwyth Town secured safe passage to the next round of the JD Welsh Cup with an emphatic 9-0 victory against the resilient and spirited Aber Valley side at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue. A hat-trick apiece from Harry Franklin and Owain Jones as well as goals from Raul Correia, Mathew Jones and Rhys Davies meant that the Seasiders avoided a potential upset against 5th tier opposition. Backed by the largest away following at Aberystwyth aside from cup finals, the visiting band of supporters nearly enjoyed the perfect start. Gregor Zabret denied the Abertridwr based side a with a low save inside his penalty area. Antonio Corbisiero’s men led with the game eight minutes old. A beautiful free flowing move, which started inside the black and green half, was well finished by Correia for his first goal in Aber colours following some great interplay between Franklin, Jack Rimmer and Jamie Veale The goal was harsh on the visitors who’d started the half well but the advantage galvanised the home side as they grew into the game. They fashioned a number of chances to increase the advantage with Franklin and Jones going close before Jon Owen was denied his first of the campaign by the offside flag. However, Aber didn’t have to wait long for their second. Franklin cut inside form the left and curled a low shot which wriggled under visiting stopper Aaron Brown. A third and fourth quickly followed before the interval and both efforts could feature heavily in the ‘Sgorio’ Goal of the Month competition come the end of September. Mathew Jones continued his early season free kick escapades as he curled a sumptuous free kick into the bottom corner in front of the raucous away support in the Dias Stand. And the fourth was as equally as spectacular. The ball broke across the edge of the penalty area to an onrushing Owain Jones who curled a shot into the top corner of the net to give the men from Ceredigion a four-goal advantage at the interval. The second half started in the same vein as the first finished with Aber on top. Jones and Rimmer went close before Franklin grabbed his second of the afternoon. The tireless Owen saw his shot well saved but the rebound fell to the grateful Northern Irish man. The South Walians began to tire and the Cymru Premier side dominated proceedings from there on. Substitute Sam Phillips was twice denied, firstly by a defender on the line before Brown pulled off a great stop. Franklin too was looking dangerous but could only a curl a shot over the bar from a narrow angle. Owain Jones increased the advantage further when he was able to finish cutely inside the penalty area following some fantastic exchanges between Franklin and Owen down the left flank with the latter putting it on a plate for the former Swansea City player. Richie Ricketts and Alex Pennock were introduced into the action and the former was immediately involved in the action. The winger delivered a delicious cross into the penalty area for Franklin who was able to head home to complete his hat-trick. Rhys Davies, who had an impressive afternoon, capped off a great defensive performance with a brilliant left footed volley inside the area before Owain Jones completed the scoring and his own trio of goals, dancing past the Valley defenders and putting the ball past Brown with a low finish. A fantastic afternoon for those in Black and Green and for those in orange who were backed magnificently throughout the afternoon by their band of travelling supporters. We hope that you enjoyed your day on the Seaside. Aber return to action next Saturday at home to Cardiff Met at 17:15 with the game being broadcast live on Sgorio’s Facebook page! Welsh Cup 2nd Round Saturday 4th September 2pm Kick-Off The Seasiders make a welcome return to Welsh Cup action for the first time in 18 months, as South Wales Alliance League side Aber Valley visit Park Avenue for this 2nd Round tie. To the disappointment of many, last year’s competition was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is a competition that ATFC have done well in in recent years – reaching the final in 2009, 2014 & 2018 – and one that always captures the interest of supporters. Antonio Corbisiero has added to his squad ahead of this match, with Louis Bradford returning to the club on loan from The New Saints until January. Supporters will have no doubt heard about the impressive partnership Louis formed with Lee Jenkins during last seasons behind closed doors matches and will be looking forward to seeing the pair reunited at the heart of the Seasiders defence. This weekends opponents, Aber Valley FC, play in the South Wales Alliance Premier League, which is at Tier 4 of the Welsh football pyramid. They were crowned Champions of Division One in 2020. The Premier Division offers direct entry into the newly formed Ardal Leagues and Aber Valley currently sit in mid table, with 2 wins from 4 league matches played this season. Although a club called Aber Valley played in the Welsh Football League as far back as the early 1960’s, the current club was formed in 2000. Originally called Aber Valley YMCA, they took on their current name in 2015, and play at Abertridwr Park. Aber Valley are jointly managed by Dean Wood and Neil Lloyd-Meek with Leigh Williams, Gareth Roberts and Jonathan Midgley making up their coaching team. Former Aberbargoed Buds stirker Scott Armitage is currently their top goalscorer with 6 goals, whilst Ben Thornton and Jacob James have three goals each. To set up this tie, they have already had seen off Tredegar Town, Treowen Stars, and Porthcawl Town Athletic, who were defeated 2-0 through goals by Shane Reynolds and Nathan Radzimierski. We are expecting at least 6 full coaches of fans from our visitors, which is some truly incredible support, and we sincerely hope all travelling fans enjoy the match and their day in Ceredigion. A warm welcome at Park Avenue will be guaranteed and hopefully with the Black & Green Army in good voice, the match will be played out to a terrific atmosphere. Tickets are £7 for Adults / £4 for Concessions / Under 16’s free - please be aware that kick-off is at 2pm NOT the usual 2.30pm time and that our gates accept only cash, apologies for any inconvenience!
