Connah’s Quay Nomads vs ATFC: Match Preview

Wednesday 30th September
MATCH BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

The Black & Greens go into Wednesday’s match against the reigning Cymru Premier champions on the back of a three match unbeaten run.

Friday’s 1-1 draw with Newtown, where Aber were only denied victory in the final five minutes of the game, continued the Seasiders impressive start to the season. Fielding an unchanged starting 11, including no less than five players 21 years of age and under and six locally based players, the team sheet was once again very much to the blueprint of what Gavin Allen is trying to achieve at the club.

The emphasis on youthful and local players is no more apparent than in defence, with 19 and 18 year old central defensive partners Lee Jenkins & Louis Bradford outstanding over the course of the last three games, showing composure that players 10 years their senior would be proud of. They have been complimented by Jack Rimmer & Harri Rowe in their modern fullback roles, both showcasing their attacking as well as defensive talents on Friday night by combining to force Newtown’s David Jones into a stunning save just before the break.

Friday’s match also saw Jamie Veale’s memorable first goal for the club; a powerful strike from the edge of the box that gave Newtown keeper Jones no chance whatsoever, following good build up play from Jack Rimmer & Jonathan Evans.

The blend of Aber’s exciting attacking talent and defensive durability should give the Black & Green Army plenty of reasons to be optimistic going into Wednesday’s mouthwatering clash.

Connahs Quay themselves have started the season brightly, with two wins and draw to their name so far. They also did the whole of the Cymru Premier proud with their performances in Europe; limiting experienced Bosnian outfit Sarajevo to a 2-0 victory in their Champions League qualifier, before almost taking Europa League regulars Dinamo Tblisi to extra time – losing out only to a heartbreaking 97th minute goal.

Manager Andy Morrison has added Aaron Edwards and Danny Davies to his title winning squad and the Nomads will once again be a formidable opponent, with only Michael Bakare having departed from the squad that denied The New Saints the title for the first time in nearly a decade last season.

They come into Wednesday’s match on the back of a 4-1 win at Haverfordwest County, which followed a 1-0 home victory against Penybont and a 1-1 home draw against Bala on Matchday One. Craig Curran is the Nomads’ top goalscorer so far this campaign after his double against Haverfordwest; whilst Kris Owens, Declan Poole & Aaron Edwards have all registered single strikes along with Sameron Dool – whose wonder strike in added time sealed the draw against Bala in Sgorio’s first televised game of the season.

Looking ahead to the game, Aber Manager Gavin Allen commented “We know its going to be tough. We’re not expecting an easy game at Connahs Quay. We know it’s going to be physical – but we’ve got to concentrate on our own game, match them physically and keep the ball better. We are going there to try and get something from the game – hopefully all three points!”

Our media team will once again be bringing you comprehensive coverage of the game on our Twitter feed @AberystwythTown, as Covid-19 regulations continue to dictate that matches must be played behind closed doors for the foreseeable future. You will, however, be able to see the Black & Greens in action on S4C twice next month as our away fixtures at Bala (now 10th Oct) and Caernarfon (now 24th Oct) have both been selected as live games in front of the Sgorio cameras, as well as our home fixture versus Penybont on Facebook Live.
