Match Preview: Penybont vs ATFC

20/1/2022

Penybont vs Aberystwyth Town
Friday 21st January
JD Cymru Premier
7.45pm KO

Aberystwyth Town return to JD Cymru Premier action for the first time in 5 weeks tonight for a visit to the SDM Glass Stadium in Bridgend to face Penybont FC.

The Black & Greens last match before the suspension of the league due to the rise of the Omicron variant of Covid was an entertaining 3-3 draw at Caernarfon Town which saw Harry Franklin & Matty Jones on the scoresheet – Jones scoring twice from the spot.

This result meant that Aber entered the enforced break in 10th position, with exactly 17 points from the opening 17 games. Antonio Corbisiero’s team also boast one of the meanest defences in the league as things stand, with only The New Saints, Newtown, Connahs Quay and tomorrow nights hosts Penybont having conceded less goals so far.

Penybont, led by former Seasider Rhys Griffiths, are having another excellent season in the JD Cymru Premier. They currently sit well placed in 4th position, and entered the break on a run of 3 wins in their last 5 matches. Overall, they have accumulated 27 points from 17 games.

There has already been some transfer activity at the SDM Glass Stadium this month, with midfielder Kai Whitmore joining from Ammanford and top scorer James Waite departing for Newport County. Waite had netted 8 goals in his 17 outings this season, but Penybont can still call on the services of Sam Snaith who has netted 7 in 15 himself and Lewis Harling, who has 5 in 17.

The clubs have already met twice this season, both at Park Avenue. The first meeting was in the Nathaniel MG Cup and saw Aber triumph 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, whilst the league meeting saw Penybont take all three points with a 3-0 victory in October.

This match kicks off a busy period for ATFC with Cefn Druids visiting Park Avenue next Friday evening (28th) before home and away ties against Haverfordwest County – the home match on 1st February being the clubs 1000th match in the Cymru Premier! This is followed by consecutive trips to Bala in the Welsh Cup and the League on the following two weekends.

Tickets are available on the gate at the SDM Glass Stadium tomorrow night, priced at £7 for Adults, £5 for Concessions and £2 for Under 16’s. The stadium can be found on Llangewydd Road, Bridgend and the postcode for your sat-nav is CF31 4JU. Cymru Premier Football is back!!
