Welsh Cup Semi: High Noon at Bala!

9/3/2018

Welsh Cup Semi Final
Sunday 8th April (ko 12pm)
Aberystwyth Town v Newtown
at Maes Tegid, Bala

The details of this season’s JD Welsh Cup Semi-Finals have been announced this afternoon by the Football Association of Wales.  Connah’s Quay Nomads and Bangor City will meet at the Corbett Sports Stadium in Rhyl on Saturday 7th April. Kick-off will be at 19:35, and the game will be televised live by broadcast partners S4C.

The sides, who met in the 1998 Final, have already clashed in cup action this season, Nomads knocking Bangor out of the Nathaniel MG Cup 2-0 thanks to two late goals from Michael Wilde and Callum Morris. It will be the first time the sides have met in the JD Welsh Cup since Bangor won 2-0 on Deeside in the Fourth Round back in 2013.

You have to go further back for the last time that Newtown and Aberystwyth met in the Cup, the Seasiders edging a Third Round Replay 1-0 back in 1995/96. The two will meet this year at Bala Town’s Maes Tegid on Sunday 8th April, in a Midday kick-off which will be streamed live on the Sgorio Facebook page, and on the S4C website.

The mid-Wales derby clash is sure to be highly competitive, as both teams chase a place in Welsh football’s showpiece game for the second time in recent years, Newtown having made the final in 2015, and Aberystwyth having done so the year before.

It is the first time that a Welsh Cup semi-final will have been held in Bala
, who won the competition for the first time
in their history last season with a 2-1 victory over The New Saints.

Stats
Bangor are the most decorated side still left in the competition, having won the trophy 8 times, including three times in a row from 2008-2010 under current Aberystwyth boss Neville Powell. Nomads’ only previous final appearance was that 1998 defeat to the Citizens, while Aber’s one and only Cup win was in 1900. Newtown are two-time JD Welsh Cup winners, winning the second ever playing of the competition in 1878/79, and also in 1894/95.
