Tuesday 28th August (7:45p.m Kick Off)
Welshpool Town v Aberystwyth Town
Aberystwyth Town will kick off their 2018/19 Nathaniel MG Cup campaign with an away tie at Spar Mid Wales League outfit Welshpool Town on Tuesday evening. Aber enter the game having fallen to a narrow 2-1 defeat away at JD Welsh Premier League leaders Connah's Quay Nomads on Friday evening, in a game where they could easily have snatched a late point. The black and greens will now look to get back to winning ways with a tough fixture at Maes y Dre Recreation Ground.
Despite a late wonder strike from Wes Baynes at the Deeside Stadium, Aber weren't quite able to snatch a late point that they arguably deserved against Connah's Quay Nomads last Friday evening. In a frantic finale, Aber peppered the Nomads goal with John Danby producing a fine save from Declan Walker's penalty and despite falling to defeat, there were many positives for the black and greens to take forward into tomorrow night's fixture with Welshpool Town.
After Friday's defeat, Director of Football Nev Powell commented; "For an away performance it was really good, we were the better side for large parts and we should have got a point out of the game in the end. I couldn't have asked for any more from the lads, and we'll get their heads up and focus on a big week with the league cup game and home fixture against Llanelli next Friday". Indeed, there were many positives to be taken from Friday's defeat that Aber can look to build on ahead of a week in which they face two fixtures in three days - starting on Tuesday at the Recreation Ground.
Tuesday nights hosts Welshpool Town are a familiar name to many Aber fans, spending many years in the Welsh Premier League before slipping down to the Cymru Alliance and Spar Mid Wales League. Nevertheless, they will provide the black and greens with another stern test in Tuesday's Nathaniel MG Cup, with players like Sam Evans and Ricky Litchfield posing a goal threat. They've picked up 7 points from their opening 5 games in the Spar Mid Wales League including a 1-1 draw away at Bow Street 10 days ago.
In what is sure to be a challenging tie for Aber, kick off at the Recreation Ground is at 7:45p.m, and Welshpool Town's address is listed as SY21 7SU. Come along and see if Aber can can kick start another classic cup run similar to that in the JD Welsh Cup last year!
