Dafabet Welsh Premier League Sunday 18th September (ko 3pm) Gap Connah's Quay v Aberystwyth Town Tuesday 20th September (ko 7.45pm) Carmarthen Town v Aberystwyth Town Aberystwyth Town face two games in three days hoping that history will repeat itself. Last Season a disappointing start to 2015/6 was overcome with a 3-0 win at Carmarthen in mid September which spurred the team on to an Autumn recovery which included a 2-1 win at Gap Connah's Quay. Repeating those results presents Town Manager Matthew Bishop with an enormous challenge coming off the back of three consecutive Dafabet WPL defeats. His side need to rediscover the confidence created by two away wins in a week at Airbus and Llandudno a mere three weeks ago. Bishop told atfc.org.uk this week: "The players are hurting and they want to put things right. We have got a good group of players that I believe in, and they are good enough.” This year's topsy turvey WPL is a hard one to call but few pundits exclude Gap Connah's Quay from their tips for a podium finish. The appointment of Andy Morrison as Manager following that defeat to Aber at the Deesdide Stadium has been the catalyst to a turnaound in fortunes which lead the Club to the UEFA Europa League this summer. Bishop said: "They’ve got threats all over, and they are solid too. They are are one of the title contenders, so it is going to be difficult, and it’s another away match. We have got to crack on, and see if we can get something from it.” Carmarthen meanwhile showed what they are capable of last Saturday at Newtown and with onetime Town Striker Mark Jones in imperious form a win at the Waundew will be no mean feat. However Aber's Players have a point to prove and history shows that one or two good results away from home can make a major difference to a Club's run of form. The Supporters Coach to Connah's Quay leaves Park Avenue at 10.45am on Sunday, with a return trip costing just £10. Keep the Faith, and see you there. No Aberystwyth Town season would be complete without any highs and lows. Following a blistering start, Town have suffered consecutive defeats against Rhyl, Bangor and Carmarthen, writes Club Media Assistant Matthew Wallace. But there’s little time and place in football for self pity and it’s something that manager Matthew Bishop is keen to address.
“We’re disappointed after last week. There’s frustration in the dressing room. I was very disappointed with the three goals that we gave away. But we are also getting punished for some bad decision-making, and we’ve got to cut that out.” He told atfc.org.uk Despite the recent setbacks, the league is incredibly tight with just a few points separating the top 4 and the relegation zone during the infancy of this campaign. There is all still to play for in the coming weeks. “I know the players are hurting and they want to put things right. We have got a good group of players that I believe in, and I still think that they are good enough. We are having a spell where a bit of the luck is not on our side.” Thoughts turn to Sunday’s match against last year’s play off champions Connah’s Quay Nomads, a side that the Seasiders claimed four points from a maximum of six available last season. “They’ve got threats all over, and they are solid too. They are are one of the title contenders, so it is going to be difficult, and it’s another away match. We have got to crack on, and see if we can get something from it.” The Supporters Coach tpo Connah's Quay leaves Park Avenue at 10.45am on Sunday, and a full match preview will be published on atfc.org.uk tomorrow. Saturday 10th September Aberystwyth Town 0 Carmarthen Town 3 An own goal from Aber's Will Bell (12 minutes), and further strikes from Kieran Lewis (64 minutes) and Liam Thomas (71 minutes) consigned Aber to defeat at Latham Park this afternoon. Onm a sunny afternoon in Newtown, Aber started purposefully with Luke Borrelli threatening with an early strike off target. Joe Clarke tested Lee Idzi with a long range lob and at the other end Kieron Lewis' corner was headed wide by ex Aber striker Mark Jones. The visitors were then gifted an early lead when a cross from the right was headed into his own net by the unfortunate Bell, and the game swung in Carmarthen's favour. They went on to dominate the next period with Lewis Harling bringing a great save out of Dominic Richards, Dave Vincent testing his handiowork with a header and Declan Carroll going close. Geoff Kellaway was trying to create openings with his running but there was precious little room in midfield for Aber to develop more than half chances. A late rally from Aber saw Kurtis March sending a shot just wide, Sam Rodon heading wide from a Chris Jones corner, Kellaway flashing a shot wide and Rodon being denied by a goal line clearance, but for their disciplined performance Carmarthen deserved the lead at half time. The hosts threatened again early in the second half with cross after cross being fired into the Carmarthen box, but to no avail. Bell headed over from another Jones corner, as did Rodon from a subsequent set piece. Meanwhile at the other end a great save from Richards denied Carroll, then back came Aber with Kellaway setting up Blake Davies and Borrelli also threatening the visitors' keeper. However streetwise Carmarthen killed the game twenty minutes in when Mark Jones slid Lewis down the right flank ,and he finished confidently for 2-0. Aber were really up against it now but still they kept coming with Kellaway having a shot deflected for a corner, and Davies drawing a save from Idzi. Then came the killer blow as Jones ran to the touchline and pulled the ball back for Liam Thomas to score Carmarthen's third, and the Black and Greens' misery was complete. Late chances for Bell and Joe Clarke could not mask a very disappointing performance and result for Aberystwyth Town. Town Manager Matthew Bishop will be looking for a response next weekend as Aber travel North once more to face Gap Connah's Quay on Sunday 18th September, with a 3pm kick off. |
