PREVIEW: CAERPHILLY ATHLETIC (A)

After a week without a fixture, Aberystwyth Town return to action this Saturday looking to pick up where they left off on Bank Holiday Monday, when an impressive 4-0 victory over Llanelli Town secured a third consecutive win for the Seasiders.

Craig Williams’ side currently sit fourth in the league table, just one point behind the three teams who are tied on 13 points at the top of the table. Aber have also played two games fewer than Baglan Dragons, who sit immediately above them.

Interestingly, the Seasiders’ next league fixture after Saturday’s game will see them host current league leaders Pure Swansea at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue on Friday 25th September.

Saturday’s hosts are a relatively young club, having been formed in 2007 under the name Dynamo Aber. The club initially competed in Sunday league football and local five-a-side competitions before progressing into the Taff Ely & Rhymney Valley Alliance League.

After winning the league in 2013–14, they were promoted to the South Wales Amateur League. The competition was renamed the South Wales Alliance League in 2015, with the club earning promotion to Division One in 2016. A year later, in 2017, the club changed its name to Caerphilly Athletic.

In 2025, Caerphilly secured promotion to the Ardal South East, finishing as runners-up in the South Wales Alliance Premier League. They went one better in their first season at Tier 3, winning the division and securing promotion to the Cymru South.

The club is managed by Ian Butterworth, who has retained several key players from last season, including Drew Perrett, Fin Skiverton and Troy Greening. Top scorer Iwan John, however, departed for Merthyr Town during the summer.

Among the club’s new arrivals are Izaac Follon from Caerau Ely, Liam Reed and Tom Walbeoff, who joined from Carmarthen Town and Llantwit Major respectively.

Caerphilly have adapted well to life in Tier 2 and currently sit ninth in the Cymru South, having collected eight points from their opening six matches. Their record so far includes two wins and two draws.

They come into Saturday’s fixture following a 2-2 draw with Trethomas Bluebirds, who share the CBB Centre for Sport Excellence stadium with Caerphilly. Drew Perrett was the star of the show, scoring both of Caerphilly’s goals.
