Aberystwyth Town return to JD Cymru South action this weekend as they welcome Newport City to Park Avenue for what promises to be an exciting encounter.

Callum McKenzie’s men head into the fixture aiming to secure a fourth consecutive league victory, following an impressive run of form that has lifted confidence throughout the squad. However, the Black and Greens will face a stern test against a strong Newport City side managed by Sam Houldsworth.
The visitors, who finished third in their debut JD Cymru South campaign last season, currently sit eighth in the table with four wins from their opening ten fixtures. Newport have proven to be a competitive outfit at this level and will be eager to bounce back after a dramatic midweek defeat.
Aberystwyth are expected to welcome back captain Desean Martin and influential forward Jonathan Evans to the matchday squad. Their return comes at a crucial stage in the season, as Town embark on a demanding run of fixtures against five of the league’s current top eight sides.
While this will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, Newport City bring with them over half a century of footballing history. Originally formed as Spencer Works AFC in 1963, the club became Llanwern AFC in 1988 before adopting their current name in 2016.
Newport earned promotion to the JD Cymru South via the 2024 Ardal South play-off victory over Cefn Cribwr, and following last season’s strong performance, they further strengthened their ranks in the summer. Among their arrivals are experienced Cymru Premier players Nat Jarvis, Rhys Kavanagh, and Barry Town United legend Kayne McLaggon – the team’s current top scorer with four goals.
Last weekend, Newport progressed in the JD Welsh Cup before being involved in a seven-goal thriller against Caerau Ely on Tuesday night, narrowly losing 4–3.
