Aberystwyth Town Women battled fiercely in blustery conditions at Park Avenue but were ultimately undone by a strong Swansea City side, falling 3–1 in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup.

Despite a difficult first half against the wind and a physically assertive Swansea team, Aber grew into the game and were rewarded late on through Millie Gardner’s composed finish.
Aberystwyth began against the worst of the wind, and Swansea used the gusts to their advantage early on, forcing the Seasiders deep inside their own half. The visitors opened the scoring in the 17th minute, Swansea’s Aimee Deacon, who struck low into the corner. Goalkeeper Sophie Steele produced a strong performance, making a few great saves to keep the deficit to one.
Just as Aber were settling, Swansea doubled their advantage in the 44th minute. A corner carried by the wind fell perfectly for Maddy Murray, who rose highest to nod into the net despite heavy defensive pressure. The timing was cruel, and Aber went into half-time 2–0 down but encouraged by their improved defensive structure.
With the wind now at their backs, Aberystwyth started the second half with more intent. However, Swansea struck again early, this time in the 51st minute, as Chloe Chivers unleashed a powerful long-range effort that flew into the top corner, leaving Steele with no chance. Despite the setback, Aberystwyth responded admirably, with the girls never giving up and working hard for each other. After multiple substitutions, Aber went at Swansea.
The Seasiders persistence finally paid off in the 81st minute. After Libby Isaac’s clever ball was brought down by Millie Gardner with her first touch and slotted confidently into the bottom corner, sparking deserved celebrations from the home crowd.
Despite the result, Aberystwyth can take pride in a spirited performance marked by resilience, adaptability, and a strong finish. The squad handled difficult weather, defended bravely, and produced encouraging attacking moments in the second period. Gardner’s goal was a well-earned reward for the team’s character and fight.
With league action returning next week, this performance, especially the second half, offers a solid platform to build on.
