Leave Your Mark: Two Legendary Managers, Eight Great Green Legends and a Local Charity To Benefit8/5/2016
Final details are emerging for Aberystwyth Town's Farewell Match to the Park Avenue turf, known as Leave Your Mark, this coming Friday (ko 7.30pm). The Managers will be the legendary figures of Meirion Appleton and Tomi Morgan, and Green Legends so far confirmed are Donald Kane, Kevin Morrison, Glyndwr Hughes, Ken Williams, Nigel Nicholas, Gavin Allen, Mark Devereux and Andy Evans. More will be announced in the week, and other old friends of the Club will also be playing. Admission on the night will cost £2, and half of the gate receipts will be donated to the Club's Chosen Charity, Hospice at Home Aberystwyth Volunteers. Any parties still interested in bidding to play are invited to contact Club Marketing Director Thomas Crockett on 07717 470301. Two more green Legends have signed up for the Club's Leave Your Mark game on Friday 13th May. Left winger Nigel Nicholas from Preseli signed for Meirion Appleton's side from Maesglas in 1987 and was a consistent performer for the next 15 years, making a total of 301 appearances for Aber, scoring 7 goals. His buccanneering runs down the flank and mesmerising dribbling skills created chance after chance in the days before Assists were counted, and his laid back and likebale nature made him a firm favourite with Black and Green supporters. Although he once had a trial at Chelsea, won a number of trophies at Aber and played in a Welsh Cup Final for Carmarthen he claimed his most memorable game was the Final of his home village Maenclochog's Five a Side Tournament! Gavin Allen joined Meirion Appleton's Aber side in 1996 after his release from Tranmere Rovers and made a huge impression with 53 WPL goals in his first two seasons at the Club. A Wales Under 21 International and prolific striker who created a brilliant partnership with Ryan Nicholls up front, Gavin went on to make a total of 238 appearances, scoring 113 goals in three spells at the Club over a nine year period, and also played for Bangor City, Barry Town and Carmarthen Town. After settling in the Town, Deiniolen born Gavin went on to serve as Assistant Manager with Penrhyncoch, and currently works at the University of Aberystwyth. Previously we revealed Meirion Appleton and Tomi Morgan as our two Managers, and Green Legends Donald Kane, Kevin Morrison and Glyndwr Hughes and Ken Williams are also in. We will be revealing further names this week. The bidding deadline to play in the Leave Your Mark game has now past, but late enquiries can still be made by email to abertownfc@live.co.uk, with a contact name, address and phone number, or by text to Club Marketing Director Thomas Crockett on 07717 470301. Minimum bids will be £100. Aberystwyth Town FC congratulate The New Saints on their victory in this afternoon's Welsh Cup Final, with a 2-0 win over Airbus which has earned The Saints a fully deserved domestic treble.
This result however has had a negative impact for Aber, as it has eliminated the Black and Greens from the UEFA Europa League Play Offs and brought their season to a close in a rather inocuous manner. We would also like to congratulate MBi Llandudno and their Manager Alan Morgan, who cut his teeth at Park Avenue of course, on their European Qualification, and wish TNS, Bala, Llandudno and the Play Off Winners all the best as they represent the Dafabet Welsh Premier League in Europe come July. Aberystwyth Town will announce some pre season fixtures in due course and we expect the Welsh Premier League fixtures for 2016/7 to be released towards the end of June. The new season is expected to kick off on Friday 12th August. |
