Aberystwyth Town are delighted to announce the signing of 27 year old Central defender Craig Rogers, who joins the Club after a spell playing with Norwegian Club Bergsoy-Idrettslag.

Chester-born Rogers, who at 6 foot 3 inches will dominate any defence, joins Aber having played 17 matches for the Norwegian side this season, scoring twice and making no fewer than 10 assists. He was previously with Warrington Town during their famous FA Cup run of 2014, and has also represented Denbigh Town, Icelandic side Dalvik/Reynir, and was with Jacksonville United while studying at Oral Roberts University in the USA between 2011-3.

Craig made an excellent impression in his first training session last night and everyone at Aberystwyth Town FC welcome him to the Club. He will wear squad number 4 for the Black and Greens. 

JD Welsh Cup – Fourth Round

Aberystwyth Town booked their place in the JD Welsh Cup quarter-finals after a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Cardiff Met on a wed and windy afternoon at Cyncoed Campus.  Malcolm Melvin scored the game’s only goal in the 37th minute, as Nev Powell’s side defended their lead admirably and battled their way into the quarter-final stage of the competition for the first time in 4 years.
 
Aber made two changes to the starting line-up from their victory against Connah’s Quay Nomads a fortnight ago, with Ryan Wollacott and new signing Damien Allen replacing the recently departed Jonny Spittle and John McKenna. With the winds at their backs in the first half, Cardiff Met started the game on the front foot, without being able to create any meaningful chances on goal. Aber’s defence looked solid from the first whistle, with Ashley Young slotting into the centre-back position seamlessly. The game’s first real opportunity came on 20 minutes, as Joe Phillips failed to keep his header down after Ryan Wade’s cross into the box. Soon after, the hosts found themselves in on goal, but former seasider Dylan Rees fired over the crossbar as it remained goalless. Met continued to dominate possession as the half went on, and began to threaten Aber’s goal, as Eliot Evans’ cross-come-shot was almost converted at the back post, before Chris Mullock produced a fine save from Will Evans’ deflected effort. However, it was the visitors who took the lead against the run of play on 37 minutes. Town striker John Owen was able to flick on Wade’s cross into the box and midfield maestro Malcolm Melvin nodded the ball over the head of Met goalkeeper Will Fuller into the net, to send the travelling supporters into raptures. With their tails up, Aber defended their lead superbly up until half time, despite the hosts’ best efforts to find an equaliser, and Nev Powell’s side entered the break with a slender advantage.
 
Town started the second half in much brighter fashion, with Allen and Tom Owens gaining some control in midfield and Joe Phillips and John Owen providing a pacey threat in behind. Nevertheless, it was Met who came closest with the first chance of the second half as Gwion Howell was denied by Chris Mullock, who produced an outstanding fingertip save to divert the ball on to the crossbar. Aber’s goal was living somewhat of a charmed life, but Nev Powell’s side were standing strong against everything that was thrown at them. The visitors continued to look threatening on the break, as John Owen dragged his shot wide after being played through on goal. On 70 minutes, with the game still in the balance, Allen was replaced by Luke Borrelli and soon after Geoff Kellaway was introduced in place of Joe Phillips. Cardiff Met continued to see plenty of the ball without creating any clear cut opportunities, as Ryan Wollacott and Ashley Young handled Gwion Howell and substitute Dan Spencer superbly. On 80 minutes, Aber made their third and final change as Craig Hobson replaced Ryan Wade, and soon after they very nearly wrapped up victory as Hobson played in Borrelli who sent his attempted lob just inches over the crossbar. Town’s vocal supporters lifted their voices a notch with the game entering it’s final stages, as the hosts huffed and puffed without being able to blow Aber’s house down. Hobson demonstrated some fantastic hold up play as Town saw out the four minutes of stoppage time in admirable fashion, and as the referee’s full-time whistle blew, it was evident how much the victory meant to the green army of players and supporters.
 
This was undoubtedly one of Aber’s finest away results of the season, defeating a Cardiff Met team who’d lost just one game in all competitions at Cyncoed Campus this season prior to the game. Nev Powell’s side now March on to the next round of the JD Welsh Cup, and will now await Monday night’s quarter-final draw with great anticipation.

JD Welsh Cup - Fourth Round

Aberystwyth Town will look to advance to the quarter-finals of the JD Welsh Cup on Saturday, as they travel south to face Cardiff Met for the fourth round clash at Cyncoed Campus.  Town advanced to the fourth round thanks to a thumping 4-0 home victory against current cup holders Bala Town back in November, and the Seasiders will now be looking to produce another big performance in order to advance to the quarter finals of the competition for the first time since 2015.
 
After a brief pause in JD Welsh Premier League action last weekend, Town have enjoyed two weeks to recover from their excellent 4-2 victory over high-flying Connah’s Quay Nomads at Park Avenue on January 13th.  During that time, Nev Powell’s squad has been buoyed by the additions of goalkeeper Adam Walters, midfielder Damien Allen and striker Kurt Sherlock, with all three signings expected to feature in Saturday’s squad. Despite the brief break in fixtures, manager Nev Powell will expect his side to be full of confidence after producing excellent performances in their last two JD Welsh Premier League matches, most notably two weeks ago against the Nomads. In an interview with Aber Town’s Youtube channel after the game, Powell commented; “That’s our biggest win of the season, without a shadow of a doubt, and we were exceptional going forwards with some of the goals we scored. The last two performances we’ve put in have been outstanding, and if we continue to work as hard as we have been recently with the attacking players we have, it’ll stand us in good stead”.  With the praises of their manager ringing in their ears, Town’s players will look to continue their fine form this weekend as they face Cardiff Met for the second time in just three weeks. Aber earned a thoroughly deserved point in the league fixture back in early January thanks to Ashley Young’s equaliser, and they will be hoping to produce similar performance levels again this weekend as they chase a place in the Welsh Cup quarter-finals.
 
Hosts Cardiff Met enter Saturday’s game on the back of a narrow defeat to The New Saints in the Nathaniel MG Cup Final at Park Avenue last weekend, and Christian Edwards’ side will be looking to shake off that disappointment as they aim for a place in another cup quarter-final. Despite securing their place in the league’s top six positions for the second half of the season, the Archers have won just twice in their last eight games in all competitions. Met ran out 2-0 victors at Park Avenue in the league fixture back in September, and the sides battled to a 1-1 draw in the corresponding league fixture at Cyncoed Campus just three weeks ago.
 
In what is sure to be a magnificent cup tie, Aber will again be relying on their vocal away supporters to help push them on to victory on Saturday afternoon. Kick off at Cyncoed Campus is at 2.30p.m, and Cardiff Met’s address is listed as Cyncoed Campus, Cyncoed Road, CF236XD, with the stadium located directly behind the NIAC Indoor Athletics Track. Welsh Cup weekends are hard to beat, so why not get over to Cyncoed Campus and cheer on Nev Powell’s side to the result they need!

Cardiff Met and The New Saints will face off in the first domestic cup final of the 2017/ 18 season as they battle for the Nathaniel MG Cup at Park Avenue.  Saturday’s final marks the students’ first appearance in the league cup final, whilst eight-time winners The New Saints will be looking to defend their title for the fourth consecutive season.
 
Both teams have enjoyed successful seasons thus far; securing top six finishes in the first half of the JD Welsh Premier League season and advancing into the fourth round of the JD Welsh Cup. However, both sides will now turn their attentions to Saturday’s cup final at Park Avenue and the chance to pick up the first piece of silverware on offer this year.
 
Cardiff Met’s road to the Nathaniel MG Cup final has come in the form of two home victories and two away victories in the competition. The students ran out 2-1 victors away at Goytre in the first round before defeating Pontypridd Town at Cyncoed Campus in the second round. Following on from that, they ran out 2-0 victors away at local rivals Barry Town before an Eliot Evans header secured a 1-0 win at home against Newtown in the semi-finals. Met will be hopeful that key trio Brad Woolridge, Emlyn Lewis and Adam Roscrow will be fit to play in Saturday’s final after missing recent fixtures due to injury.
 
Current cup holders The New Saints have enjoyed a slightly more straightforward path to Saturday’s final, after a second round victory away at Flint Town followed by a third round win at home against Caernarfon. The Saints then produced an excellent 1-0 victory away at Connah’s Quay Nomads in the semi-final thanks to a stunning strike by Ryan Brobbel, to book their place in the final.
 
Kick off at Park Avenue on Saturday evening is at 5:15p.m, and the game will be broadcast live on Sgorio from 5p.m. In what is sure to be a humdinger of a cup final, don’t miss out on the action as both teams battle to lift the Nathaniel MG Cup!

Aberystwyth Town are delighted to announce the signing of striker Kurt Sherlock, who like midfielder Tom Owens joins the Club from Radcliffe FC.

Kurt, 26, made 5 appearances for the Evo-Stick side earlier in the season, scoring 4 goals and earning a Man of the Match nomination against Bamber Bridge in the process. Liverpudlian Sherlock has previously played for Formby, Bootle, Runcorn Linnets, Stalybridge Celtic and Marine FC.

Kurt will wear number 15 in the Aber Town squad. Everyone at the Club welcomes him on board and we look forward to many goals in Black and Green.

SWWGL Women’s Alun Evans Cup Group Stage

Aber Town Ladies got 2018 off to a winning start as goals from Mared Jones, Amy Jenkins and Ffiona Evans secured victory for the Black & Greens who remain unbeaten in the League and League Cup so far, writes Steven Brookes.

After a long Christmas break Aber's first match of the New Year was away to Villa Dino Christchurch, near Newport. On a very cold day in South Wales the visitors made a disappointing start and were nowhere near their best. Despite this, Aber were still the team looking more likely to score the opening goal. Amy Jenkins and Kelly Thomas both headed over from a corner whilst Caroline Cooper's effort from the edge of the box was tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper. Town did eventually take the lead with 29 minutes gone when left Back Mared Jones's effort from out wide beat the keeper at her near post to put Aber one-nil up.

Cooper came close again 17 minutes into the second half when her low shot was well saved but three minutes later Aber doubled their lead. Amy Jenkins won a free kick on the edge of the area which she took and her excellent effort found the bottom corner of the net. Naomi Evans came agonisingly close to getting the third but was unable to convert Ffiona Evans's cross, then came the third goal with six minutes remaining. Captain Ffiona Evans found herself one on one with the keeper and calmly put the ball into the back of the net for her first of the season.

The Black and Greens may not have been at their best but they did deserve their 3-0 victory. Their next match is a tough league game against Cascade YC at Park Avenue next Sunday, with a 12pm kick off.
