The full time role will oversee the Club's Academy, develop players and community links, oversee Coach development and liase with the FAW Trust to deliver on their key strategic aims. Allen, who possesses an A-license Coaching Qualification, was appointed as First Team Assistant Manager in September 2018 and his experience was a welcome addition to the squad and coaching staff at Park Avenue. Gavin enjoyed a successful playing career with the Seasiders - joining Meirion Appleton's Aber side in 1996 after his release from Tranmere Rovers, and he made a huge impression with 53 Welsh Premier League goals in his first two seasons at the Club. A Wales Under 21 International and prolific striker who created a brilliant partnership with Ryan Nicholls up front, Gavin went on to make a total of 238 appearances, scoring 113 goals in three spells at the club over a nine year period, and also played for Bangor City, Barry Town and Carmarthen Town. After settling in the Town, Deiniolen born Gavin went on to serve as Assistant Manager with Penrhyncoch, before working as a coach with Aberystwyth University. He has also worked in coaching roles with Aber's Academy Squads, as well as Shrewsbury Town's Academy. The Club would like to thank the FA of Wales and FA Wales Trust for their support on the appointment. Aberystwyth Town start their 2019/20 JD Welsh Premier League Campaign with a Dyfed derby at home to Carmarthen Town, on Friday 16th August, with a 7.45pm kick off. Their first away match will be a trip to the Seaside on the Friday night preceding August Bank Holiday, to face Welsh Europa League representatives Barry Town United, also with a 7.45 start, before Town host another huge derby on Bank Holiday Monday against The New Saints. Aber’s first phase will end with another home game against newly promoted Penybont on Friday 17th January. The First Team’s JD Welsh Premier League fixtures will be announced at 1pm and later in the day Matthew Bishop’s First Team squad reassembles for their first training session of 2019/20.
The Black and Greens’ friendly schedule will kick off two weeks tomorrow on Tuesday 9th July, when Mid Wales League big hitters Llanidloes Town visit Park Avenue for a 7.30pm kick off. Four days later Championship North outfit Gresford Athletic will follow the Daffs down the A44. Aberystwyth Town can confirm that despite agreeing terms with the Club, Les Davies and Leo Riley have decided to sign elsewhere for Clubs lower down the pyramid. They will be replaced in the First Team squad and any new signings will be announced when, and only when their registrations have been confirmed by the Football Association of Wales! See you in two weeks! Third prodigal son returning to Park Avenue is Porya “Rio” Ahmadi! Iranian-born Rio is a clinical and mobile striker with previous Welsh Premier League experience after spending spells with Bangor City and Rhyl between 2015 and 2017. He was Bangor's top goal scorer in the 2015/16 season - netting 8 goals in 29 appearances, and started his footballing career with Sheffield United's Academy. Ahmadi has also spent time playing for Chorley, Droylsden, New Mills, and most notably Salford City, where he scored hat-tricks in consecutive games back in 2014. Rio was a top performer for the Black and Greens in Phase I last season, scoring five vital goals and proving himself to be an accomplished and skilful finisher at this level, as well as an excellent crosser of the ball. He left the Club to join Newtown in January 2019, but has now opted to rejoin Matthew Bishop’s men. Rio also boasts a rare accolade shared only with Cledan Davies, as being possibly the only two Aberystwyth Town keepers never to have conceded a goal. His 40 minute spell between the sticks in the opening game of 2018/9, which preserved a crucial three points for the Black and Greens at home to Llandudno still live long in the memory! Welcome back Rio! Second to return is Star Man Joe Phillips! He originally signed for Aberystwyth Town in July 2017 having played for the same Stourport Swifts side as Ryan Wollacott, for whom he scored 16 goals from 46 appearances in 2016/7. Joe made some prominent contributions to Town's pre-season of 2017, not least when he scored a terrific goal with a low drive against Hull City Under 23s in August. He became a permanent fixture in the First Team Squad of 2017/8, scoring a perfect hat trick against Connah's Quay in January 2018 (highlights here). Joe was part of the Town side which reached the Welsh Cup Final in 2018 and his thrilling performances down the wings and behind the strikers had the supporters singing his name with glee. Joe’s best moment last season was a stunning goal at home to TNS which was very unfortunately disallowed, and although he left Park Avenue for a brief spell at Alvechuch last season, he is back, with his attacking flair expected to thrill Black and Green supporters further in 2019/20. Welcome back Joe … and we are also delighted to retain Joe’s father Mark who remained a loyal supporter of the Club even after Joe’s departure. |
