Black and Green Supporters have no reason to feel deprived of their football fix this weekend, even though Aber's regular season finished last Saturday with a tremendous 4-0 thumping of Bangor City. Saturday 30th April (ko 2.30pm) Spar Mid Wales League Penrhyncoch v Hay St Mary's On Saturday afternoon near neighbours Penrhyncoch, managed by Aber Town Academy Head Gari Lewis, host Hay St Mary's at Cae Baker (ko 2.30pm), knowing that a win will secure the Spar Mid Wales Championship and promotion to the Cymru Alliance. Such a promotion would obviously be a major boost to football in North Ceredigion so we are sure a good contingent of Aber fans will turn up tomorrow to cheer on the Roosters to what we hope will be a memorable victory. Sunday 1st May (ko 11am) FAW Academy Finals at Latham Park, Newtown Aber Town Under 12s v Rhyl Gari Lewis will be a busy man this weekend as no sooner will the Penrhyn game be finished than his thoughts will turn to Aber Town Under 12s FAW Academy Cup Final on Sunday morning at Newtown FC. The Under 12s clinched their place in the Final with a brilliant 3-0 win over Pontardawe at Carmarthen two weeks ago and will be hoping for a similar result on Sunday. The Young Team would be grateful to receive your support, and the Under 12s game will be followed by National Under 14s and Under 16s Finals at Latham Park. Monday 2nd May (ko 4.15pm) JD Welsh Cup Final The New Saints v Airbus UK Broughton This year's Welsh Cup Final, between Champions TNS and sixth placed Airbus will have a huge bearing on the end of Aber's season. TNS go in as overwhelming favourites to earn the treble, and if they do so the Black and Greens' season will be over. If Airbus win however Aber will progress to the UEFA Europa League Play Offs where they will play Carmarthen Town at Richmond Park on Wednesday evening (ko 7.30pm). Come on the Wingmakers! Aberystwyth Town's record appearance holder Ken Williams will play in the Leave Your Mark game on Friday 13th May, and you could play alongside him! Ken, bottom left in the team photo from the mid 1980s (left), had an amazing 642 game career in Black and Green which is summarised in Dai Pugh's Updated History of the Club thus: "Ken Williams, equally excellent at full back and central midfield, was a regular in the first team between 1974/5 and 1991. The blonde bomber played a record 642 games for the Black and Greens, scored 45 goals, captained the team for four seasons and made two appearances for the Welsh non League team. A model of consistency on the field, marvellously two footed, strong in the tackle and a powerful runner with the ball, Ken Williams is regarded as one of Aber's outstanding post-war players." Last week we revealed Meirion Appleton and Tomi Morgan as our two Managers, and Green Legends Donald Kane, Kevin Morrison and Glyndwr Hughes are also in. We will be revealing further names this week. You can bid money to play in the Leave Your Mark game, and the highest 20 bidders will be eligible to play, irrespective of ability, on receipt of payment by Friday 6th May at the latest. The deadline for bids is 5pm on Friday 29th April, and they can be made by email to [email protected], with a contact name, address and phone number, or by text to Club Marketing Director Thomas Crockett on 07717 470301. Minimum bids will be £100, and in the event of a tie a draw will be made. Aberystwyth Town FC can reveal that Green Legend Glyndwr Hughes has agreed to play in the Leave Your Mark game on Friday 13th May, and you could play alongside him for £100! Glyndwr spent 17 years in Aber Town's midfield through the 1990s and 2000s through a succession of Managers and teams. He was in many ways a unique player, and a huge favourite with Aberystwyth Town Supporters who respected his one club WPL career. A winger with a thrilling greyhound like burst of pace, his flying mop of hair meant that he was recognised and admired throughout the country following 375 Welsh Premier League appearances and 105 goals for Aber between 1994 and 2013. Glyndwr, or "Paddy" as he was known, also played for Aber Town in the UEFA Inter Toto Cup in both 1999 and 2004 and scored when selected for Wales' Semi Professional side. After retiring for Aber in 2013, he went on to play for his beloved local club Bont FC and was recently nominated by the Daily Post as one of the WPL's 10 Best Ever Midfielders. Last week we revealed Meirion Appleton and Tomi Morgan as our two Managers, and Donald Kane and Kevin Morrison as the first two Green Legends. Aberystwyth Town FC Legends Donald "Jock" Kane and Kevin Morrison are the first two Green Legends to confirm for Aber Town's farewell event to the Park Avenue turf, Leave Your Mark on Friday 13th May - and you can bid to play alongside them for £100. Jock is a legendary character to any Black and Green supporter from the 1980s or 1990s, having played 503 games and scored 137 goals for Town between 1981-2001. After arriving in the University as a student from Glasgow Donald was the beating heart of Meirion Appleton's hugely successful side from the Mid 1980s which twice won the Central Wales League, and he also played for Town in the Abacus League and the League of Wales. Since retiring his influence has grown even further within the Club as he has played the roles of Chairman, Vice Chairman and countless others with distinction, overseeing three forays into European Football, as and helping to transform Aber Town off the field into one of the most respected Semi Professional clubs in Wales. Kevin is no less respected, having scored a truly remarkable 396 goals for the Club in 489 games between 1984 and 2000. A fearsome striker respected and coveted throughout Wales, Kevin's ability to jump like a salmon and hang in the air before heading the ball goalbound was uncanny. His period of success again coincided closely with Meirion Appleton and Tomi Morgan's spells in charge at the Club, and he famously scored Aber's first ever European goals at Park Avenue in front of a crowd of over 2,000 at home to Floriana in July 1999. Kev has remained with the Club behind the scenes and is now a Club Director, Treasurer, and last year he became a father too! Kev and Jock are fourth and sixth left in the back row in this rare photo of Aberystwyth Town's Championship Winning side of 1985. Last week we revealed Meirion Appleton and Tomi Morgan as our two Managers, and a host of Green Legends have agreed to play. We will be revealing the names this week. Congratulations from everyone at the Club to talismanic midfielder Chris Venables, whose thrilling fifteen minute hat trick at Park Avenue yesterday ensured a 20 goal haul for the season, and a third consecutive Welsh Premier League Golden Boot Award. Chris, who is now approaching 350 WPL games, has now scored a career total of 128 Goals in the Welsh Premier League, 73 of which have come in his three and a half seasons at Park Avenue. Since moving forward to the number ten role in January 2014 Chris has been unstoppable and his phenomenal achievements from Midfield have earned world wide acclaim. We hope to have an interview with Chris on our Youtube Channel in due course, and are sure our supporters will echo the message of congratulations from everyone at the Football Club. Dafabet Welsh Premier League
Aberystwyth Town 4-0 Bangor City Saturday 23rd April ATT: 751 A highly successful Family Fun Day at the club was followed by equal success on the pitch as Aberystwyth dispatched Bangor City 4-0 in the Welsh Premier League to keep them in contention for a European Play-Off place. An electric atmosphere at Park Avenue, boosted by an impressive away support, was not justified by the play as the two sides struggled to assert their dominance on the match. In a half of very few chances it was Bangor that came closest, speedy winger Christian Langos, causing all sorts of problems down the right flank and whipping the ball across the face of goal. Frustration led to a succession of shots from range, Bangor's Ashley Young going close from 25 yards. The home side's best chance fell to Stuart Jones but his powerful header was sent over the crossbar. Both teams trudged in at half time with the 751 in attendance hoping for a drastic improvement in proceedings. It was Bangor City who initially came out of the blocks quickest, Shaun Cavanagh forcing a double save from Mike Lewis before Langos again posed a threat, but a rather tame effort was not trouble for Lewis. This seemed to spark the Black and Greens into life and seven minutes later, Chris Venables broke clear on the counter attack from a Kane Owen flick and finished astutely to break the deadlock. Fast forward only four minutes and Venables is in on goal again, following a neat back heel clearance from Cledan Davies, the lead doubled with a calm finish into the corner. Aber really had the upper hand and pushed to increase their lead, Craig Williams' sublime free kick causing havoc in the box and eventually hacked clear by the Bangor defence. Ross Stephens then came close with a thundering left footed effort that sailed just wide and into the Dias Stand. Aberystwyth continued to press, and an unnerved Bangor defence let Chris Venables slip away again and the league's top scorer, played in by the league's top assister Craig Williams, rounded the keeper and placed the ball confidently past the defenders on the line to complete an impressive hat-trick. 3-0. The fourth came 5 minutes from time, Ross Stephens completing the rout tucking in from a well placed corner. The result leaves Aberystwyth in 8th place in the league, hoping for Airbus to win the cup so as to ensure a play-off place. The club would like to offer a massive thank you to the 200 or so who came to the family fun day event before the game. We hope a good time was had by one and all. The next time the Park Avenue turf sees action will be the last time as the Leave Your Mark match takes place on May 13th. Promises to be a good one! Report by Tomos Ings |
