Saturday 23rd April (ko 5.15pm) Aberystwyth Town v Bangor City Aberystwyth Town First Team's last ever game on the green turf of Park Avenue on Saturday evening is a must win game if the Black and Greens wish to keep their unlikely European dream alive. Nothing less than three points at home to Bangor City will guarantee 8th place for Aber, who will then sneak into the Play Offs if Airbus beat TNS in the Welsh Cup Final on May 2nd. Last Saturday's 94th minute defeat at Carmarthen was a gut wrenching blow to Interim Manager Wyn Thomas' side, and they know they will have to up their game on Saturday if they are to have any chance of prolonging the season. However they do have a good record against the Citizens this season, having won 3-2 at Bangor in September, 4-0 at Park Avenue in December and drawn 0-0 back up at Nantporth in February. Aber have no suspensions and their only injury worry Luke Sherbon is approaching match fitness. Seventeen goal Chris Venables will be looking for more as he chases a third successive WPL Golden Boot, while Craig Williams will be attempting to improve on his record as the WPL's joint Best Assister, with ten. Bangor meanwhile have Steve Lewis suspended. The game also marks Manager Ian Hughes' last game in charge following his resignation in the week and we are sure supporters will wish to take the opportunity to show their appreciation for a memorable and exciting three seasons in charge. The Main Event will be preceded by a free Family Fun Day from 2pm, and admission to the game is also free courtesy of Club Sponsors Cambrian Tyres. It's never dull at Park Avenue - we'll see you there for Kick off! Aberystwyth Town FC is sad to announce to resignation of Manager Ian Hughes. Ian informed Club Chairman Tony Bates of his intention to step down this afternoon, after a period on sick leave, and the Club has reluctantly accepted his decision. He told atfc.org.uk this evening: "I have had six fantastic years with Aberystwyth Town, three as an Assistant and three as a Manager – however with the Club about to begin a new chapter in its history the First Team needs to be training twice if not three times a week to challenge the other teams who are currently training this amount on their 3G surfaces. With a five hour round trip from my current home it would be impossible for me to offer the required commitment due to the travelling and locality of the club. I would like to thank the President, Chairman, Vice Chairman and all the other directors and committee members at the club who have been unwavering in their support throughout my tenure. The club were brave to give a 29 year old the Managers job however I would like to think I have repaid the faith they showed in me. I am proud to have transformed a club which had finished near the bottom the two previous seasons, resulting in one of the most successful periods in the clubs recent history. Reaching the Welsh Cup Final and qualifying for Europe in my first season was a highlight, as was finishing in Fourth place the following season and coming ever so close to qualifying for Europe once again. This season has been hampered with me having an operation however I believe I leave the club in a much better place than when I took over. Thank you to the Players and Staff past and present who I have worked with, and I wish them all the very best in the future. A final special thank you to the fans who I hope enjoyed my attacking style of football which meant we scored 72 league goals in the first season and a similar amount in the second. Having been part of a management team in the Welsh Premier League for near 200 games already, at the age of 32 I look forward to my next chapter wherever it may be." The Board of Directors would like to thank Ian for his hard work and dedication during his six years at the Club and genuinely wish him all the best for what we are sure will be a hugely successful career in football. Chairman Tony Bates commented “Ian is a man of the utmost integrity and unfailingly has always acted in the best interests of the Club. Suffice to say he will always be incredibly welcome at Park Avenue.” Ian will be in the dug out for one final game as Aber host Bangor City in their Dafabet Welsh Premier League Play Off Decider on Saturday evening (kick off 5.15pm). Football is a game of contrasting emotions, writes Club Media Assistant Matthew Wallace. Despair can turn to ecstasy in the blink of an eye. Hope, optimism and despair play in parallel alongside one another in a cruel sycophantic land. With seconds of the game to go on Saturday Aber looked as if they would secure a point that would have made life difficult but not insurmountable ahead of the final game of the season against Bangor. But bad luck struck at the most cruel of moments. Kieran Lewis' shot struck the heel of Lee Surman to loop over a helpless Mike Lewis to leave the Seasiders' European hopes hanging by the most slender of threads.
"I'm not sure we've done enough to win the game. We're bitterly disappointed. We didn't start the game the best but we came and grew into the game well" Interim manager Wyn Thomas told Sgorio following the completion of the game. After a slow start, Aber grew into the game and created the better of the chances during the first stanza. Following the break, tension filled the air. With so much at stake, both sides were afraid of making the mistake. Local winger Geoff Kellaway, who was a constant menace for the Old Gold defence all day, had Thomas' men's best chance of the match. "The improvement came from Geoff Kellaway and he's had a great chance in the second half which he was incredibly unlucky not to take." Unfortunately, football is a game of fine margins and Aber are now left to lament two defeats against Carmarthen as this year's hopes of finishing 7th are over. "We're bitterly disappointed. Since the split we've done well and I've got an incredibly disappointed squad in the dressing room right now." Aber now have to beat Bangor to secure an 8th spot and hope that Airbus repeat their own result against TNS in the Welsh Cup final in order to secure a playoff spot. Should TNS win, then this Saturday's game marks the end of the season for the Black and Greens. Now more than ever, the club and the side need a big crowd to get behind them to ensure the last ever game to be played on grass at Park Avenue is one to remember and yields the right result. Saturday 16th April Carmarthen Town 1 Aberystwyth Town 0 A tense and tight match which seemed destined to end all square was settled by a 94th minute deflected strike from the impressive Kieron Lewis, which cost Aber Town a vital point at Parc Waundew this afternoon, and put seventh place out of reach for the Black and Green this season. On a sunny afternoon Aber did start the game with purpose, snapping at their opponents heels, and although Geoff Kellaway's pace was a threat for Town, the hosts created most of the early chances. Lewis Harling lobbed a soft effort into keeper Mike Lewis’ hands, before Mark Jones set up Harling, but his effort was deflected to safety. Luke Cummings then set up Kieran Lewis who flashed an attempt wide, but then the visitors started to find their feet. Kellaway’s cross found Rhys Griffiths’ head but the effort squeaked past the post, and Kellaway next crossed for Chris Venables but his attempt was blocked for a corner. Craig Williams then twice found Griffiths’ head with corners, but the first was deflected over and the second whooshed wide. Kellaway then burst down the left and his brilliant left footed strike was deflected wide by Lee Idzi. Griffiths had another header gathered safely and despite a strong finish to the half Aber went in, probably deservedly at 0-0. With both sides’ fates for the season hanging in the balance, and tension rising, the second half developed into a rather scrappy affair. Kellaway sent another effort wide, before Kieron Lewis was stopped in his tracks on the edge of the area, but Carmarthen’s free kick was cleared. Griffiths set up Ross Stephens but his lob was gathered by Idzi, and then Harling saw a lob touched to safety by Mike Lewis. Idzi made further comfortable saves from Stephens and Griffiths, and a Craig Williams free kick squeaked past the far post. Venables then played in Kellaway with a great touch, and his instinctive volley went narrowly wide before at the other end Kieron Lewis then hit the crossbar with an excellent drive. Venables had a goalbound free kick deflected to safety, and then with the game heading towards a draw which would have kept Aber in contention for a seventh placed finish, good work from Mark Jones on the edge of the visitors’ box created the space for Lewis to send in a drive from the right hand of the area, and the ball looped up off Lee Surman and over Mike Lewis to notch a winner which created consternation and devastation in the Black and Green ranks. In truth neither side really played well enough to deserve winning this game, and although Aber did create opportunities going forward it was Carmarthen who got lucky right at the death. The victory means Town must now beat Bangor City at home next week to finish in eight place in the Dafabet WPL, and then hope Airbus beat TNS in the Welsh Cup Final. Those two results will give the Black and Greens the chance to revenge today’s result in a UEFA Europa League Play Off Quarter Final back at Carmarthen on Wednesday May 4th. Hope springs eternal! Aberystwyth Town FC are delighted to confirm that Legendary Black and Green managers Meirion Appleton and Tomi Morgan have agreed to take charge of the respective sides for our Leave Your Mark match on Friday 13th May (ko 7.30pm). Meirion first took charge of Aber in 1982, and enjoyed two separate spells in charge over the subsequent 17 years. He presided over possibly the most successful period in the Clubs history in the mid 1980s, managing a side which picked up two Welsh Intermediate Cups, two Central Wales League Championships, not to mention Central Wales Cups, League Cups and Summer Cups. There were also two never to be forgotten Welsh Cup Quarter Finals against Newport County in 1986, the initial 3-3 draw at Park Avenue attracting an incredible crowd of 2717. He later had a spell managing the Club in the Welsh Premier League, went on to win the Welsh Cup Final with Bangor City and is still heavily involved in local football. Tomi succeeded Meirion Appleton as Manager in the late 1980s and oversaw a period of huge growth in the Club's prestige as they progressed to be a major force in Welsh non league football. His sides twice finished runners up in the Welsh League (South) and earned a third placed finish in the first season of the League of Wales which has to this day never been beaten. After going on to manage Carmarthen, Welshpool and Porthmadog Tomi returned for a second spell in 2012/3 and saved the Club from relegation on the last day of the season. He is currently well known throughout Welsh Football for his unique English language commentaries on S4C's Sgorio programme with Mark Jones. Supporters can bid money to play in the Leave Your Mark game, and the highest 20 bidders will be eligible to play, irrespective of ability, on receipt of payment by Friday 6th May at the latest. The deadline for bids is 5pm on Friday 29th April, and they can be made by email to [email protected], with a contact name, address and phone number. Minimum bids will be £100, and in the event of a tie a draw will be made. A series of Black and Green Legends have also agreed to play and further details will be revealed in due course. |
