Aberystwyth Town FC can provide its supporters with the following squad update, with Pre Season training having commenced this week.
Lee Jenkins and Harry Franklin have rejected improved offers and decided to leave the Club, as will Gregor Zabret, Alex Pennock and Owen Orford. The Club would like to thank these Players for their service and wish them all the best in the future. Further recruits to the First Team Squad will be announced in due course. Aberystwyth Town this morning discovered their JD Cymru Premier Phase 1 fixture list for the upcoming season, opening away at The Airfield against JD Cymru North champions, Airbus UK, on the 12th August for a Friday night kick-off!
Town then welcome Cardiff Met to Park Avenue - a quick reunion for new manager Anthony Williams against his former team of five seasons - before the Black & Greens travel to the second newcomers for this season, Pontypridd United. Looking ahead to the back end of Phase 1, Town's festive double-header will come against Europa Conference League participants Newtown before we close out against Huw Griffiths' Cofis at Park Avenue. Just 17-years-old, Cam broke onto the scene during the 2021/22 season, scoring an immense 38 goals across all competitions for the club's development U19 side, earning himself a consistent spot on the First Team bench and a number of appearances from the bench. Making his debut away at Penybont in Phase 1, Cam went on to make three further appearances thereafter - including on the final day of the season, where his deft header secured a point for Town against Connah's Quay Nomads, earning Town an 8th place finish in the Playoff Conference. Cameron also received international honours, receiving several call-ups to the Welsh Schools U18 squad at just 16-years-old, including an unforgettable trip to Italy for the Roma Caput Mundi tournament - joined by fellow Seasider Jamie Jones. Cam told us: "Last season it was a bit of whirlwind for me - starting out with the U19 and then breaking through to the First Team Squad was fantastic. The last six weeks of the season are a bit of a blur! Playing for Wales, scoring my first goal for the First Team and then visiting/gaining experience with some professional clubs….life was hectic, but a good hectic! I’m currently in my second year of A Levels at Penglais School and my main focus is to complete my education there. When I spoke to the manager he assured me that opportunities will come my way, and he believes in developing young, hungry players. I’m looking forward to pre season and giving my all and doing what I love…scoring goals. I’m hopeful that I can impress and give the manager some difficult choices to make in terms of selection." First Team Manager Anthony Williams commented: "I'm delighted to have Cameron with us this season having shown glimpses of his ability toward the end of last season. As a young player, he has shown immense potential and the opportunity for consistent exposure to senior football will only develop him further." Croeso nol, Cam! / Welcome back, Cam! New Aber Manager Anthony “Taff” Williams gave his first interview this week to Club Media Officer Matthew Wallace, broadcast exclusively via Aberystwyth Town’s Youtube Channel here.
In a wide ranging interview Taff discussed his fascinating playing career as a professional goalkeeper, and spells playing under Graham Souness, Kenny Dalglish, Roy Hodgson and Chris Coleman. He also revealed that pre season training starts this week, the Players are already on a training plan and some of last season’s Under 19s team will join training with the First team squad. Also, Williams is targeting some loan deals from Football League Clubs so that the team will be competitive, and striving for the Top Six. On his journey in football Anthony said: “I’ve had a long Coaching career and it came to a point where it’s my turn, my time and hopefully we’ll have a successful future. (Aberystwyth Town) has been traditionally a big club in the Welsh League. It’s a football town – you can see there’s a passion there, a willingness to do well within the Club and hopefully we can move forward together.” Having already secured the retention of seven of last year’s contracted squad Players, plus five new signings, Williams is happy with his business so far: “We’re building a squad ready to start training next week. They all seem in good spirits and ready to go, so I am really keen to get started. I have sent out a training plan, because of where we are logistically. It started last week and it’s programmed session to session through pre season and into the season. I spoke with Appy (Meirion Appleton) about the Under 19s, and a couple of those boys will come in to show what they can do – because it’s a Club which wants local talent in there as well. We want to thrive with people from the local area.” Town’s new Manager is also looking to bolster the squad with some loan signings from Football League Clubs: “I have also spoken with a number of Clubs from the Premier League and Championship (about taking players on loan). We are some way down the line in the process of bringing in one or two players, so I am using my contacts in the game to strengthen certain positions and even out the squad.” Finally, Williams detailed his ambitions for the coming season: “We’ve all got to strive for the Top Six and then build from there. I don’t see why we can’t be there or thereabouts. Starting the season well is massively important and then who knows. It’s an exciting season, there’s a number of boys I am really looking forward to working with. We are going to strengthen a little bit more, then we are going to be very competitive and hopefully be in the Top Six come January 7th”. You can watch the interview in its entirety on Aberystwyth Town’s Youtube Channel here. Aberystwyth Town’s pre season campaign begins a week on Saturday, 9th July at home to Porthmadog, with a 2pm kick off. Aberystwyth Town are delighted to announce the return of goalkeeper Leigh Jenkins from Penrhyncoch FC - four years since his return to Cae Baker after a previous spell with Town.
Local lad Leigh is a well-known face within local and regional football having represented both Penrhyncoch and previously Bow St over extended periods. Ahead of the 2018/19 season, Leigh joined Town under Neville Powell and impressed enough in pre-season to earn the starting job for the season opener against Llandudno at Park Avenue - however, a fractured shin 60 minutes into the match halted his momentum and saw his Black and Green journey cut cruelly short. Leigh re-joined Penrhyn thereafter and last season made 28 appearances in all competitions as The Roosters achieved a 9th place finish in the JD Cymru North. Leigh told us: "After a decent pre-season under Nev Powell in 18/19 I was delighted to get the start for the season, but I was gutted to be stretchered off after 60 mins. Despite that, I hugely enjoyed my time at the club and can't wait to get going again! I've been with Penrhyn for most of my career from juniors to senior team, so that club has played a huge role in my life growing up. Having played with some great players and under great managers, I know how tough a league the Cymru North is and how desperate those those teams at the top are to gain promotion, so I'm proud of what we were able to achieve in holding our position for many years. When I spoke with Taff and he outlined his plans, I was very interested in returning as I feel like I have unfinished business at the club. I'll be giving my all to be ready for the season ahead and do my bit for this great club." First Team Manager Anthony Williams said: "Leigh is a very experienced goalkeeper who is coming off a good season with Penrhyncoch. Having been at the club previously, and being a local, he's very familiar with many of our squad and it was clear to me from our conversations how much this club means to him - so I'm delighted to add him to our group." Croeso nol, Jenks! / Welcome back, Jenks! The support we receive from our sponsors is vital to the day-to-day running of the club and our ongoing role within the wider community, so we're delighted to be representing them with these fantastic new kits for the next 3-year period. We extend our thanks to Acerbis, Aberystwyth University, Cambrian Tyres and Continental for their fantastic ongoing support as we look forward to another JD Cymru Premier campaign...
