Aberystwyth Town are delighted to retain local fan-favourite forward Steff Davies for the 2023/24 season!
First joining Town ahead of the 2020/21 season, Headteacher Steff has amassed 59 appearances and 8 goals in his three seasons in Black & Green - a number of those remaining long in the hearts and minds of the Green Army faithful well after the fact! No more true is this than in the case of Steff's 4th minute diving header against Barry Town United on the final day of the 2021/22 season with both teams threatened by relegation. Town went on to hold onto the 0-1 victory and assure safety - a feat repeated one year later, an effort to which Steff contributed once again (pictured). A spate of injuries limited Steff's involvement through last term's Phase 2 campaign - however his role as a leader was unwavering and his affinity for the club on show always. Steff told us: "I'm delighted to be signing back for the club. As a proud local player, I feel honoured to be representing the club. Last year was a battle from start to finish and I was thrilled that we managed to survive on the last day of the season. On a personal level, I had to fight against a number of injuries but always gave my all for the cause. I hope this season that I’ll be able to stay fit and help the club and team kick on. It will be another challenge this season but I’m looking forward to getting going. I know Taff is working on getting a few boys in who will hopefully help us build on last season. A big thank you to the fans who were and who have always been amazing to me on a personal level and more importantly to the team. We are going to need the Aber Town faithful more than ever this season. So make sure you get behind the team… we go again!" Manager Anthony Williams commented: "Steff is a leader both on and off the pitch who gives everything for the club and is passionate to see us do well. He's very experienced and players look up to him in the dressing room. You know what you're getting with Steff each time he puts the shirt on - a true warrior who will play through knocks and injuries to help the team. He's also been invaluable to me off the pitch last season and will be again this upcoming season." Croeso nol i ti, Steff! Aberystwyth Town are delighted to announce the retention of Club Captain Jack Thorn for the 2023/24 JD Cymru Premier season - his 4th consecutive season at Park Avenue!
After starting his career at Wrexham at the age of seven as a left-back, he progressed through the ranks at The Racecourse and was often deployed as a left winger, sometimes playing centrally. Son of former Wimbledon Crazy Gang FA Cup winner Andy, Jack was named as an unused substitute for The Dragons in the FA Cup against Newport and FA Trophy against Boston in December 2018. He made his first senior National League appearance during the 2018/19 campaign against Harrogate Town coming on as a late substitute. Jack joined Town in September 2020 after his release from Wrexham AFC, following a spell on loan with Newtown during the 2019/20 campaign. Making 23 first-team appearances in his first season in Black & Green, Jack was handed the armband for the 2021/22 season and was an ever-present in the line-up, making 35 appearances, missing only 1 game all season due to suspension. Jack returned for the 2022/23 campaign and history repeated itself as he made 35 appearances in all competitions, missing a single game to suspension. He also pitched in with two vital goals - each in 2-1 home victories against Deeside opposition, first against eventual runners-up Connah's Quay and then to Flint Town during Phase 1. Jack told us: "Last season was very up-and-down, going from 6 unbeaten at home to being 4/5 points adrift in the relegation zone with only a handful of games left. I really enjoyed the season and especially the way the lads stuck together and kept going to the end - it has been an honour to captain this team for the past two seasons. I hope this continues into next season and the lads continue to stick together. I thought Taff had a very good first season, bringing in the players we needed and getting along with everyone straight away. He always was on our side and stuck up for the lads in post-match interviews. This season, I'm looking forward to pushing on and fighting for that Top 6, especially with the group we've built and continue to build, our form toward the end showed we are more than capable of competing at a high level. I think the Gaffer can keep the core of the team together and add a few more to form a competitive squad from the start. I hope the fans continue to support us like they did at the last game against Caernarfon, as that really drove our performance to ensure the win. Can't wait to get going again!" Taff commented: "Jack is very influential in our squad and is a young player with an old head on his shoulders. He reads the game very well as is proven by his performances last season - achieving the highest number of free ball pick ups in the league, 2nd most ball recoveries in opposition half, and 2nd most interceptions. He epitomises the team spirit and togetherness we've built. There have been several other clubs after his signature, so we're delighted he's chosen to stay with us." Croeso nôl, Skipper! / Welcome back, Skipper! Aberystwyth Town are delighted to confirm the return of ever-present midfielder Iwan Lewis for the 2023/24 JD Cymru Premier season! Joining Town last summer from JD Cymru North side Guilsfield, Iwan featured in 3,238 of Town's 3,240 competitive minutes last term!
With experience across the Cymru Leagues, namely at Caersws, Porthmadog and Guilsfield, 29-year-old Iwan starred for the Guils in 2021/22 making 29 appearances and scoring 5 on his way to a spot in the JD Cymru North Team of the Season. Deciding to make the jump to the JD Cymru Premier following contact from then-newly-appointed Town manager Anthony Williams, Iwan more than proved himself in the division as he made 36 competitive starts out of a possible 36 games, only missing 2 whole minutes of action - being a late substitute vs Flint Town in March. Many would agree that Iwan's most notable moment came in the biggest (and final) game of the season against Caernarfon Town - with Aber needing to better Flint Town's result to assure Cymru Premier survival. With 50 minutes on the clock and trailing 1-2, the Cofis' Darren Thomas found himself behind the defence, bearing down on keeper Matt Turner with a golden opportunity to extend the visitor lead and require a 3-goal swing for Town... only for Iwan to recover impeccably and snatch the ball from the feet of Thomas to deny an open goal! And the rest is history... Deservedly receiving plaudits for this and his efforts throughout the season post-match, Iwan now returns for a second term in Black & Green looking to build on an impressive first top-flight campaign. Iwan told us: "Last season was full of highs and lows. Despite picking up several good results, particularly at home, we struggled to find any real consistency until late on in the season. This left us in the precarious position on the final day, but it was testament to the group as a collective to stick together and manage to drag ourselves to survival. The club has a real tight knit feel with a core group of individuals who work so hard to ensure that everything is in place for us on a match day. The support we received from the fans in both home and away games throughout the season, despite at times being on poor runs of form was tremendous and very much appreciated by us all. Taking over as manager relatively late on last year, I think Taff had a tremendously hard task of effectively re-building a squad due to several significant departures. With a full pre-season to work in, I’m sure he is looking forward to the opportunity to build on the current squad which will hopefully allow us to progress in the coming season. I'm delighted to be back and hoping to kick on from last year. In terms of ambitions, I think if we apply ourselves and prepare right each week, taking one game at a time the rest will take care of itself." Manager Anthony Williams commented: "Iwan played the most minutes of any player in the league last season for good reason - his performances are always consistent and he is one of the fittest players I've seen in a long time. He is the ultimate professional and was an ever-present in our very strong midfield unit. Having made the step up to the top division, he has proven his quality and we are delighted to have him with us again this season as a number of clubs were after his signature." Croeso nôl, Iwan! Aberystwyth Town are delighted to confirm the retention of 7-time Cymru Premier winner and centurion goalscorer Alex Darlington for the 2023/24 season!
34-year-old Alex began his footballing career with Wrexham as a seven-year-old before completing a 2-year youth scholarship with The Dragons and spending a season on professional terms at The Racecourse - joined at the time by Town manager Anthony Williams. Alex joined The New Saints as a nineteen-year-old, spending nine-and-a-half-years at Park Hall, amassing 234 total appearances and 94 league goals as TNS lifted seven league titles, four Welsh Cups and five League Cups during his spell. Alex was also on target in Europe for The Saints, netting twice against Midtjylland and once against Cliftonville to aid the Oswestry side’s continental efforts. Alex was also capped at international level in 2011 and 2012, making two appearances for Wales’ U23 Semi-Pro side against Estonia U23 and Norway U23. Alex joined Bangor City for a 12-month spell in January 2018 before joining Maltese First Tier side Mosta FC for a six-month spell in January 2019. Alex returned to Wales for the 2019/20 season with Airbus UK before joining Cefn Druids for the 2020/21 campaign. Alex joined Town ahead of the 2021/22 season and predominantly featured in a holding midfield position making 17 total starts and 8 appearances from the bench, finding the net once against his former side Cefn Druids as Town ran out 6-0 winners at Park Avenue. Last season, Alex was returned further up the pitch where he made 24 appearances across all competitions and notching 5 goals - including the winner on the opening day away at Airbus UK Broughton. Darlo told us: "I'm delighted to sign for a 3rd season at Aber. I feel we finished the season really well, so hopefully we're able to keep the squad together and add a bit more quality and experience to help us going forward. I'm looking forward to working with Taff again and hope to chip in with a few goals again with the fans behind us as ever" Taff commented: "Darlo has masses of experience and is a natural goalscorer. He has a hugely positive influence in the dressing room and is a valuable person for us both on and off the pitch." Croeso nol Darlo! / Welcome back Darlo! Niall Flint has been awarded the JD Cymru Premier Player of the Month award for April. Flint netted twice in April, firstly from the spot against Airbus UK Broughton before famously nodding home Sam Litchfield’s cross in the dying embers against Caernarfon Town to confirm top flight status for the Seasiders for another season in a thrilling 3-2 victory. Speaking about the prize, Flint stated, “Recognition and support is much appreciated in what was an entertaining end to the season. Thank you” Congratulations Niall from everyone at the club! ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Mae Clwb Pêl-Droed Aberystwyth yn hapus i gyhoeddi bod Niall Flint wedi ennill tlws Chwaraewr y Mis ar gyfer mis Ebrill yn Uwch Gynghrair Cymru JD.
