"WE'LL MOVE ON" SAYS WYN AFTER CUP EXIT to airbus uk

10/3/2015

For the second time in as many rounds, Aberystwyth Town’s Welsh Cup fate lay in the hands of the footballing Gods after ending 120 minutes of action with the scores level, writes Matthew Wallace. But there were to be no repeat of the heroics witnessed at Holywell as Town bowed out of the competition after losing 4-2 on penalties. The game had to be decided from 12 yards out after the sides ended extra time level 1-1 with both goals coming in the extra 30 minutes.

Despite the obvious disappointment in leaving the competition in such a manner, Assistant Manager Wyn Thomas told Aber Town's Youtube Channel that he was happy with the level of performance the side put in: “I think we did enough to win it, but it was a disappointment to lose. We did well up in Holywell with the penalties so we were confident enough going into it.”

After a somewhat drab 90 minutes, the game exploded into life in the added half an hour. The Seasiders grabbed the initiative in the 93rd minute when Craig Williams gave the hosts the lead, only to be immediately pegged back from the head of Ryan Wignall who received his marching orders moments later. There was yet more drama to come as Lewis again proved his penalty saving credentials with a top save against Tom Field.

“When we went 1-0 up with Craig Williams, I thought that was it and that we could shut up shop. Although it’s disappointing to give a goal away and get to penalties, we’ll move on.”

With the club out of the cup now, there is nothing to distract Ian Hughes men from completing a historic campaign and claiming that second place that all associated with the club are hoping they can achieve.

“We’ve got the league to concentrate on now, we’re fighting for that second place and that automatic European spot now. The team we’ve got here, we’ll push them on and drive them on. The few games we’ve got left now, hopefully we can win enough to get that place.”

Town move on when they return to action next Friday night at Park Avenue with a tie against Port Talbot Town who have recently appointed a new manager in the form of experienced campaigner Andy Dyer.

“Port Talbot are a very good side, they work hard for one another. Yes it’ll be difficult. But I’m sure our lads can up our game and bring three points home.”

The game against Port Talbot, Park Avenue's first Fab Friday game since November, is expected to attract a big crowd, and the game kicks off at 7.45pm.
