Welcome to the first of a new semi-regular feature - the Aber Town Women Q&A! First in the hot seat is Amy Jenkins. Queen of the Twitter takeover, with a nice line in sizzling set pieces, find out what makes her angry, what you'll likely find on her Spotify Wrapped, and who she most admires. When were you happiest? That moment when Gareth Bale’s free kick went in against England in the 2016 Euros. The scenes! What is your greatest fear? Drowning. What is your earliest memory? My nan's pasta sauce (Italians do everything the best). Name your two favourite-ever footballers (one male, one female). Thierry Henry and Kim Little (I’m not even an Arsenal fan). Which living person do you most admire, and why? Cliche as it is but my dad. He’s one of the reasons I started playing football. He’s a warrior and he’s going through a pretty hard battle at the moment. I’m so proud of him. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? Sometimes I get too angry at refs Where would you like to live? Aber forever and always! What makes you unhappy? Those little black bits on the pitch on 3G that I find literally everywhere. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? ‘You’re having a laugh!’ Cat or dog? Both. To whom would you most like to say sorry? Sorry to everyone I have ever forced to listen to Paramore (best band in the world). Who is your best friend in football? Hmmm, hard question. All the girls are legends but right now I would most probably say big dog Becs [Rebecca Mathias] (but only when she gets on the bus to away matches with the rest of the squad!). All time, I would say two of the girls I used to play football in university with: Siân and Holly. They supported me through my bad injury. Where would you most like to be right now? Don’t care as long as it’s warm! Tell us a secret. Not really a secret but I’m ambidextrous Friday 16th December
JD Cymru Premier Aberystwyth Town v Penybont - Match Postponed Following a pitch inspection at Park Avenue this morning, Aber Town's JD Cymru Premier match at home to Penybont has been postponed due to a frozen pitch. The playing field at Park Avenue has been unplayable all week and remains completely frozen, and some areas (in front of Narks Corner and the Rhun Owens Stand) have not seen sunlight in four days. The pitch is not safe to play on and with no prospect of an improvement before this evening the match has been postponed. A rearranged date will be announced in due course. JD Cymru Premier
Friday 16th December (Ko 8pm) Aberystwyth Town vs Penybont Aberystwyth Town return home to Park Avenue for the first time in nearly a month this Friday, seeking what would be a hugely impressive sixth home win in a row, as former Seasider Rhys Griffiths brings his Penybont side to Ceredigion. Penybont currently sit in 4th position in the league, only two points behind Bala Town in third place. They come into this game on the back of a 2-1 defeat at Haverfordwest two weeks ago, only their fourth this season, and saw last weekend’s match at home to Airbus postponed. This Friday’s match has extra significance, as it will be the first time that Aber Town take to the field following the passing of club stalwart Ian Pugh, known to everyone as Sidelights. Sidelights was a constant and popular presence at Park Avenue. He made an immense contribution to the club over many decades, starting as a volunteer during his teenage years as Kit Man/Physio to Aber Town Youth and First Teams. He later extended these duties to also support Aber Town Academy and Womens' Teams and was a good friend to many at the club. His passing will leave a huge gap at Aberystwyth Town Football Club. Admission prices at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue Stadium this season are £8 for Adults, £5 for Concessions / Students, £2 for Secondary School age children and free entry for Primary School age children. Please note that admission at the gate is CASH ONLY. Ian, known to everyone as "Sidelights" was volunteering at the Club from his teenage years, as Kit Man/Physio to Aber Town Youth and First Teams. He later extended these duties to also support Aber Town Academy and Womens' Teams, and was an almost constant fixture at Park Avenue, where he set up a washing machine annex underneath the main stand to manage the ever increasing demands. Away from the Club Sidelights was also a regular traveller following Wales football team away matches, and was placed right behind the goal in Andorra when Gareth Bale's vital free kick went in to set up the Euro 2016 campaign. Sidelights was a popular character with a cutting wit and was an integral part of Aberystwyth Town Football Club. The Club are devastated to learn of his passing and we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ian's family and friends. Connahs Quay Nomads vs Aberystwyth Town
JD Cymru Premier Saturday 10th December 1pm KO After last weeks disappointing result at The New Saints, Aberystwyth Town have the chance for redemption with a visit to Deeside to face Connahs Quay Nomads. The Seasiders currently sit only 4 points behind 6th placed Caernarfon Town and with 7 games still to play before the league splits, Anthony Williams’ men are well in the hunt for a place in the Championship Conference come mid-January. The quest for that all-important top 6 place continues Saturday, with the game brought forward from Sunday and given a 1pm KO time. Neil Gibson’s Nomads will provide stern opposition, having gone 9 games unbeaten since mid-September, winning 8 of those. Their last defeat came at Park Avenue in the reverse fixture, when ATFC Captain Jack Thorn netted an 82nd minute winner after Harry Arnison had opened the scoring early in the 2nd half and former Seasider Paulo Mendes had equalised. Connahs Quay have also qualified for the final of the Nathaniel MG Cup, where they will face Bala Town as they look to retain the trophy, having beaten Cardiff Met on penalties to win last season’s competition. The Nomads top goalscorer this season is Mike Wilde, with the veteran goalscorer having netted 7 times since his return to Deeside following a season away at neighbours Flint Town United. Mike Hayes has netted 5 times, whilst Callum Morris has three goals to his name. The Green Army will be reacquainted with two familiar faces this weekend; both Paulo Mendes and Harry Franklin made big impacts during their spells in Black & Green. Mendes spent two years at Park Avenue, netting 9 times in 55 appearances before departing in 2020 for Caernarfon Town, moving onto Deeside a year later. Franklin netted 13 times in 50 appearances in all competitions having joined in January 2021 during the behind-closed-doors era, becoming a firm fans favourite the following season before moving onto Nomads in the summer. Deeside Stadium can be found on Kelsterton Road in Connahs Quay and the postcode for your sat-nav is CH5 4BR. The Green Army are needed to help the boys get back to winning ways, as the quest for the top six hots up! |
