Joe Clarke has left Aberystwyth Town and transferred to a Club closer to his South Wales home Midfielder Clarke was one of four players to join the Black and Greens from Port Talbot in the summer and made a good impression from the start for his technical play and excellent footwork. A virtual ever present for Aber this season with 19 Dafabet WPL starts, Joe made a big impact for Town in December setting up Geoff Kellaway's winner at Cefn Druids with a deft touch, before scoring two absolute stunners at Newtown last Saturday to gain Aber a point which could still prove to be so crucial come January 15th. After Saturday's performance Joe was picked for Sgorio's 5 a side Team of the Week (see, left) and his goal was nominated for Gol y Mis, which you can view here. Unfortunately the lengthy travelling commitments have been difficult to balance with Joe's work and family life, and with a young child on the way, he and the Club have mutually agreed that a move is in his family's best interests. Joe can be proud of his time at Aberystwyth Town FC and leaves with a glowing CV. We wish him all the best for the future and believe that he will be a real star for his new Club. Aberystwyth Town are delighted to announce the signing of talented midfielder Elliot Scotcher from Merthyr Tydfil. Highly rated Scotcher, aged 22, is originally from Pembrokeshire and spent time with Ipswich Town and Cardiff City as a youngster, before enrolling at UWIC and becoming a key figure in the monumental ascent of Christian Edwards's side from Welsh League Division Three to the Welsh Premier League. Upon graduation Elliot trialled at Newport County before signing for Merthyr Tydfil in the summer of 2015, but the creative and skillful midfielder has now transferred to the Black and Greens to showcase his undoubted talents to a Dafabet Welsh Premier League audience for the first time. We would like to thank Merthyr Tydfil FC for their impeccable professionalism in processing the transfer. Everyone at Park Avenue welcomes Elliot to Park Avenue and we wish him a long and successful career with the Club. Aberystwyth Town are pleased to announce that young Central Defender Ryan Wollacott has signed a Contract to remain at the Club until the end of the 2017/8 season. Ryan, in his debut Dafabet WPL season, has impressed through his consistently strong performances at the back for Aber over the past six months. He has been Town's only ever present player over the first 20 Dafabet WPL Matches of 2016/7 and the offer of a longer term contract was a recognition of his performances and potential going forward. Wollacott and his loyal family have travelled from the Worcester area to every game this season and the Club is delighted that they will be with us for hopefully a long time to come! The news will be a boost to Matthew Bishop's squad ahead of Saturday's big game against Cefn Druids, following on from last week's news that striker Luke Borrelli has also agreed an 18 month deal. Aberystwyth Town FC extends its best wishes to striker to Blake Davies who returned to his host club from a loan period at Park Avenue yesterday. Blake made 14 Dafabet WPL appearances for Town, scoring once. His brilliant goal at Rhyl was shortlisted for Sgorio's Goal of the Month competition for August 2016. Watch the full list here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXOxDiOpq1s The Club thanks Blake and his father Tony for their efforts and we wish Blake all the best in his future career. Dafabet Welsh Premier League
Saturday 31st December Newtown 2 Aberystwyth Town 2 Joe Clarke's 93rd minute equaliser at Newtown yesterday gained the Black and Greens a crucial point which keeps their Dafabet WPL destiny in their own hands. Clarke had opened the scoring for Aber with a tremendously hit volley on 41 minutes, but back came Newtown after the break with Neil Mitchell and Luke Boundford both netting for the Robins. The points seemed set to stay with the hosts until Clarke unleashed another volley in injury time and gain a result which means that if Aber win their last two matches before the split, at home to Cefn Druids and Cardiff Met, they will make the elite of the Top Six. A crucial afternoon for the Black and Greens started with a somewhat low key start if truth be told. Newtown looked the more threatening in the early stages with Steff Edwards overlapping well to create a headed chance for Boundford which Mullock saved comfortably. Aber responded as Luke Borrelli brought a save out of Dave Jones at his near post. Clear cut chances were few and far between with Kurtis March and Craig Williams both missing the target. Luke Sherbon then brought a save from Jones with a strong header from Chris Jones’ corner, then Mullock made a brilliant save low down to deny Neil Mitchell. Kostya Georgievsky was denied by a last minute challenge but then four minutes before the break the ball dropped perfectly for Clarke to score with a rasping volley and Aber ended the first half a goal to the good. Newtown started the second half well and Ryan Wollacott had to head Williams’ free kick back to safety and his own keeper. Then on 52 minutes the Robins were level as Williams’ corner was headed home by the unchallenged Neil Mitchell. Ryan Kershaw his the crossbar and although Georgievsky almost scored after a great move involving surging sub Jack Rimmer and March, the hosts were on top. This was underlined on 61 minutes when Kershaw crossed from the right to Luke Boundford who smashed the ball high into the net for the lead. With Aber looking despondent their Top Six hopes were hanging by a thread but credit the Black and Greens for an onslaught on Newtown’s goal in the final quarter which finally paid dividend. Home defender Andy Jones headed March’s goalbound effort over, Borrelli’s shot was parried to safety and Dave Jones tipped over Wollacott’s headed – agonising! Defender Sam Rodon headed wide and was then sent forward to add some arial power to Aber’s attack. Wollacott fired wide from Georgievsky’s left wing cross and Cledan Davies sent a free kick just wide as the incessant pressure continued. When Borrelli’s shot was blocked deep into injury time all hope seemed lost but then Cledan Davies sent in a last gasp cross which Rodon knocked on for Clarke to smash home a decisive volley, with visiting fans rejoicing a draw which felt like a win. The resilence and determination shown by Aber today bodes well for their final two games before the split at home to Cefn Druids this Saturday (ko 1.30pm) and Cardiff Met on January 14th (ko 5.15pm). Two wins would seal a truly remarkable achievement for Matthew Bishop and his squad. |
