Show Racism the Red Card’s Fortnight of Action takes place in Wales from 8th – 22nd October, 2016. Show Racism the Red Card is the UK’s leading anti-racism educational charity. The organisation utilises the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society. The campaign delivers educational workshops to young people and adults in their schools, workplaces and at events held in stadiums. This weekend will see Aberystwyth Town support the Fortnight of Action 16 in our fixture against Rhyl, both teams will be wearing anti-racism T-shirts prior to kick off to show their support for Show Racism the Red Card and its anti-racism work. The Fortnight of Action 16 forms part of the FARE Football People action weeks and is supported by the Football Association of Wales. This year’s Fortnight of Action will see clubs along with its players across Wales all unite to challenge discrimination and celebrate the contribution we all make to football, wherever we live, whatever our connection to the game and whatever our background. What started as a minor campaign in nine countries in 2001 has now become the largest series of anti-discrimination activities in sport In 2015, over 2,000 activities took place in 67 countries, including Mexico, Vietnam, the United States and South Africa, with some of Europe’s top stars lending support to the campaign such as Yaya Touré, Thiago Silva, Thomas Hitzlsperger and Edinson Cavani. All UEFA Europa League, Champions League and EURO 2016 Qualifying matches took part in the campaign, reaching fans directly at the matches and millions more through television. In 2015, 199 professional clubs participated in the campaign, joined by 17 European FAs, 12 leagues and three players’ unions. Our club ambassador this season is Geoff Kellaway who shared his thoughts saying: "Our Players are all behind this initiative and will be delighted to show our Support on Friday night." Manager Matthew Bishop also highlighted the clubs stance against racism: "As a Club we fully support the great work carried out by Show Racism The Red Card in their work to rid the game of all forms of discrimination." Football is a sport that is followed by all, and should be an enjoyable experience for all, whatever their background. During the Fortnight of Action the campaign are launching a new educational films titled “Wales Is My Home”. The film has been funded by Sport Wales and explores the issues of immigration and racism from the point of view of Wales’s migrant community. Nathaniel MG Cup Second Round Tuesday 4th October Haverfordwest County 1 Aberystwyth Town 0 History repeated itself last night at the Conygar Bridge Meadow as Haverfordwest County put injury ravaged Aber Town out of the Nathaniel MG Cup at the Second Round stage for the second season running. On a disappointing night for the Black and Greens Jamie Evans’ long range effort was the difference between the sides. The Seasiders started the game with Chris Mullock, Ricky Watts, Geoff Kellaway, Luke Sherbon and Kurtis March all missing from the squad due to injury or unavailability. However early signs were promising with both sides showing attacking intent. For County Steff Williams forced a save out of Dom Richards, then went close again soon after, while at the other end onetime Bluebird Greg Walters warmed James Gwilt’s gloves with a tester from 30 yards. Rhys Dalling went wide again for the hosts but then in the 22nd minute came the decisive moment, when Evans’ speculative effort bounced in front of Richards and squirmed into the net. Blake Davies fired over in response and a number of decent balls were delivered into the box by the likes of Luke Borrelli and Joe Clarke, but to no avail. The livewire Williams again threatened down the left before bringing a save out of Richards, and Aber’s onetime wunderkind Rhydian Davies, now playing for County, saw his free kick blocked by the visitors wall. After a poor half from Aber the hosts were good value for their lead at the break. After the break the visitors did up it for a while with Borrelli bringing a good save from Gwilt, but in open play it was just not happening for Town, and a double substitution on 56 minutes showed what Manager Matthew Bishop felt about proceedings. Sub Chris Jones sent a long range volley over the bar soon after coming on, and with Haverfordwest sitting back on their lead the scene was set for Aber to bring themselves back in. Sam Rodon sent a shot over the bar from close range but chances were few and far between, and when Borrelli hobbled off on 87 minutes hope was on the wane. Jones had two more goalbound efforts saved but in truth an equaliser would have been something of an injustice after a very disappointing performance from the Black and Greens, and Haverfordwest fully deserved their place in the Nathaniel MG Cup Quarter Finals. Town’s Players will have to play much better to get anything out of their next game in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League at home to Rhyl. A huge and curious crowd is expected to attend the game which coincides with the Opening of the new 3G Facility at Park Avenue a week on Friday, 14th October (ko 7.45pm). An event not to be missed! Aber Town Ladies welcomed current Welsh Premier Womens League Champions Cardiff Mets to a sunny Cae Piod in Bow Street on Sunday looking to keep their good start to the season going.
Cardiff Met fresh from their European adventure were first to force the pace when Jassie Vascon tested young Katie Christopher in the Aber goal who was more than a match to keep the effort out. Aber prompted by some good work in midfield by Kelly Thomas and Helen Evans forced a series of corners which had the Met defence defending desperately and a Wylde effort was headed off the line before she also bought out a good save from the visiting keeper Mureira after 20 minutes. Aber were holding their own but could sense that Met had a few more gears to up the tempo and after 34 minutes a deft back heel by Robyn Pinder from a Vascon corner broke the deadlock. The Aber ladies responded well and with Ffion Wyn Roberts and Hamman Pussey forcing the Met rear guard to give away possession it was Aber who were on the front foot going into the break. It was important that Aber did not concede a second goal but after 51 minutes a Erin Murray shot was parried by Christopher and Emily Allen pounced to give the Mets a two nil advantage. Aber did not let their heads go down and despite conceding a third on 58 minutes when Player of the Match Vascon went on a mazy run to slot home a brilliant solo effort – Aber dug deep and with Witts, Evans, Pugh and skipper Evans defending resiliently it was a cruel blow when on 93 minutes a good block by Evans fell into the path of Murray who slotted home the fourth . A well deserved victory by Mets but the Aber Ladies made them fight all the way for the points and with a bit of luck may well have forced a closer result than the score line suggests. With a break for International football next week the next game is on Sunday 0ctober 16th at 2.00pm on the new 3g surface at Park Avenue – the Ladies would welcome your support so why not pop down to see the girls in action. Nathaniel MG Cup Second Round
Tuesday 4th October (kick off 7.45pm) Haverfordwest County v Aberystwyth Town Certain Cup draws are utterly inevitable. Like the changing of the seasons, death and taxes and the inexorable march of time, it was written in the stars that Haverfordwest County would host Aberystwyth Town in this season's Nathaniel MG Cup - even before the draw was split into geographic regions, making the draw a 100% certainty. Last year's Bluebirds Manager moved North to Park Avenue in the summer taking Luke Borrelli, Greg Walters, Sam Rodon and Ricky Watts with him, while County are managed by onetime Black and Green Chris O'Sullivan, with ex Aber midfielder Rhydian Davies from Capel Bangor starring in Midfield. The two sides met at the same stage of the Competition last year at the same venue and the homesters won 4-1 on a poor night for the Black and Greens. Aber will be glad of a change of scene after a tough run of ten Dafabet WPL fixtures away from home, sandwiched around a 2-1 Nathaniel MG Cup victory at local rivals Penrhynoch's Cae Baker at the start of September. Manager Matthew Bishop has made it clear that the Nathaniel MG Cup is a Competition he wishes to do well in, and with Aber already in the last sixteen, three more wins would see the Black and Greens into a first ever League Cup Final in January. Luke Sherbon and Geoff Kellaway are sidelined with injury, and Kurtis March limped off at half time during Saturday's defeat to TNS, but a place in the Quarter Finals would be a big boost to the side before they resume League duties in eleven days time when the 3G Facility opens on October 14th. Haverfordwest are re-adjusting to life in the Welsh League and despite a mixed start to the season a 6-2 home victory over Port Talbot Town in the First Round of the Cup showed that they can be a forced to be reckoned with on their day. Kick off at the Conygar Bridge Meadow tomorrow night is at 7.45pm and a local derby feel should bring an exciting atmosphere to County's famous ground. See you there! |
