Aberystwyth Town congratulate their wonderful youth side, the Black and Green Under 19s, on winning the Welsh Premier Development League (South) for the second season running. The side, expertly managed by Bari Morgan and his Assistant Stefano Antoniazzi, secured the championship with a game to spare following a 1-0 win at Haverfordwest County last night.
The side has earned 42 points from 17 matches to date, scoring 57 goals whilst conceding only 11, and are five points ahead of Cardiff Met with a single game remaining. Town have also reached the Central Wales FA Youth Cup Final and Harri Rowe and Alex Pennock were selected for the Welsh Schools squad, along with Lee Jenkins who captained the side away to England and at home to Northern Ireland at Park Avenue. Bari Morgan said last night: “I am very proud of the entire Aberystwyth Town under 19s Squad. They have been rewarded for all their hard work throughout the season. Securing back-to-back titles is a great achievement: Da Iawn bechgyn. We now have two Finals to look forward to so the hard work continues!” The team will be presented with their Trophy and medals prior to Friday’s vital JD Welsh Premier League match at Park Avenue between Aber Town and Cefn Druids, and supporters are encouraged to take their places early to celebrate a remarkable achievement for the side. They now progress to the National Final to defend the trophy they won at Latham Park, Newtown last season with a 1-0 win over The New Saints. The same venue will host this year’s Final, where Northern Champions Cefn Druids await on Monday 6th May with a 6.30pm kick off. A good following of Town supporters are certain to travel to cheer on Aber’s all conquering youth side. JD Welsh Premier League
Friday 5th April Aberystwyth Town 3 Llanelli 2 Aberystwyth Town took another huge step towards the UEFA Europa League Play Offs with a crucial 3-2 win over Llanelli at Park Avenue on Friday night, a victory which returns them to the top of the Play Off Conference with three matches remaining, pending Cardiff Met's result at Cefn Druids tomorrow. A stunning strike from Wes Baynes on 29 minutes gave the Black and Greens the lead, and quickfire goals from Ash Ruane (49 minutes) and Marc Williams (53 minutes) seemed to have the hosts cruising, but Llanelli, who were relegated last night by a Club announcement that they will not appeal their Licence failure, hit back through Lee Bevan (63) and Joe Clarke (83) to set up a thrilling ending, which ended with Aber's fourth consecutive win. Kick off at a chilly and damp Park Avenue was preceded by a minute’s silence to commemorate Club Stalwart Leighton Wall, who sadly passed away after Aber’s last home game. Aber’s unchanged team started fairly confidently, taking the initiative and soon evergreen Geoff Kellaway was flashing a shot wide of the goal set up by the peerless Marc Williams. The visitors however were showing signs of life themselves: Michael George sent an early effort wide, then home keeper Terry McCormick came out brilliantly to deny stand in striker Joe Clarke what seemed like a certain goal. The chances kept coming and Kellaway was adjudged to have been offside, while scoring from Mattie Jones ball in – and the goal was disallowed. Williams saw a shot saved by Scott Coughlin, then a Mattie Jones humdinger screamed past the post. Jones then had a free kick tipped over the bar by Coughlin, and then finally a super move around the box saw Williams lay the ball back to Baynes who smashed the ball into the net for a super opener. Steff Edwards then attempted a Cantona-esque effort from the edge of the area which dropped wide, and Llanelli were hanging on. McCormick pulled off another super close range save to deny Clarke at the other end, and headers from Declan Walker and Williams missed the target for Aber to ensure that a very entertaining first half ended 1-0 to the hosts. Into the second half and the hosts started on fire. Four minutes in Kellaway delivered a perfect ball in from the left wing which fell perfectly for Ruane to score his second headed goal in two games. Sub Emile Ngoy tapped in at the other end for Llanelli but his goal, like Kellaway’s earlier, was disallowed for offside, and then a simple ball up the park from the hosts was terribly misjudged by Coughlin and Williams nipped in behind him to score a third, and surely seal the game for Aber. Ryan Edwards and Jones both curled further efforts wide for Town but credit to already relegated Llanelli, they finished the game strongly. When Lee Bevan headed home from a right wing corner to reduce the arrears there was still 27 minutes to go, and with the Reds flooding forward Ngoy headed over soon after. Clarke sent a shot over the bar and Aber’s fans in the Dias started signing to encourage their side to hold out. With seven minutes remaining a tricky run from George down the right saw the ball fall for Clarke who rolled his man and finally got his goal from close range for 3-2. Ruane played a great 1-2 with Marc Williams before sending a wild shot into the new netting in front of the Dias Stand, and after a series of free kicks around Aber’s box Chris Jones’ set piece was headed over by the industrious Ngoy. Back at the other end in injury time Marc Williams then held the ball in the corner, only to roll round a gaggle of visiting players and tickle the ball just past the post, and the job was done. In the face of a spirited comeback Aberystwyth Town held on for what could be a priceless three points. It was probably not a vintage performance in truth but such complaints are churlish in the face of four straight wins which have put Aber back on top of the Play Off Conference, and their UEFA Europa League dream continues next Friday night, at home to Cefn Druids (ko 7.45pm). Don’t miss it! Aberystwyth Town Football Club are delighted to announce that the club has been awarded UEFA European and Tier One Domestic Licences for the upcoming 2019/20 season. The Domestic, or Tier 1 Licence is a prerequisite for admittance into the JD Welsh Premier League in 2019/20, while the UEFA Licence is needed by Clubs who have qualified for European Competitions in 2018/9. This avenue remains open for the Black and Greens should they finish in seventh place in the Welsh Premier League, thereby earning a UEFA Europa League Play Off spot. Club Licensing Officer Thomas Crockett said: "These awards accredit hundreds of hours of sterling work carried out by Club Volunteers and I would like to publicly thank Donald Kane, Tony Bates, David Evans, Dr Richard Edwards and Jimmy Edwards in particular for their significant contributions to the process this season." JD Welsh Premier League Friday 5th April (ko 7.45pm) Aberystwyth Town v Llanelli Aberystwyth Town look to continue their superb recent form on Friday night as they host Llanelli in their penultimate home match of 2018/19 (ko 7.45pm). Four wins from their last five games, starting with three points at Llanelli's Stebonheath Ground back in February have helped the Black and Greens surge towards a potential UEFA Europa League Play Off at the end of the season, and victory against the Reds would put Aber back in pole position with three matches still to come. Goals from Ash Ruane and yet another stunner from Geoff Kellaway earned the Black and Greens a valuable 2-1 away win at Llandudno last time round, leaving Assistant Manager Gavin Allen delighted: "Brilliant, absolutely fantastic: we've ground out a result tonight. I'm not really fussed with the performances these days, it's about getting the three points." Friday night gives Aber another big opportunity to make a huge stride towards a remarkable end of the season, and Allen added: "We're just trying to put ourselves in the mix (for the European Play Off spot). If we keep going, with Llanelli next time, we'll aim for three points again and let's see what goes on." In a further boost to the Black and Greens, since the Llandudno game Matthew Bishop has returned to fill the vacancy of First Team Manager, ensuring the Club has a strong cohort on its Management Team. Visitors Llanelli have had a difficult season and will be relegated unless they win at Park Avenue. Town have won all three matches between the two sides to date but will be aware that the Reds have quality players in their roster who can cause problems for any club in the WPL, including onetime Black and Greens Joe Clarke, Chris Jones, Anthony Finselbach and Dan Alfei. As Aber continue to chase their European dream, come on down and see if they can secure another positive result on Friday evening. Kick off at Park Avenue is at 7:45 pm, and admission costs £8 adults, £5 concessions and £2 for u16's. Please note that as part of our Sponsorship deal we will be offering FREE ENTRY to all Aberystwyth University Students on Friday evening. Welsh Women's League Cup Semi-Final
Sunday 31st March 2019 Caldicot Town Ladies 1 (R Jones 84') Aberystwyth Town Ladies 0 Aber Town Ladies' hopes of winning a treble came to a disappointing end at the hands of Caldicot Town Ladies when a late winner from Rianne Jones secured a cup final spot for the hosts, writes Steven Brookes. Aber travelled to South Wales with a very depleted squad but despite this the Black and Greens were arguably the more dangerous side in the first half. Ffiona Evans came closest for the visitors but the Aber captain was unable to get onto the end of a fantastic Tania Wylde cross. Caldicot Town Ladies' last match was a convincing 6-2 victory against Aber's title rivals Barry Town United and the team in blue looked a lot more threatening in the second half. Rianne Jones came close for the hosts when firing wide after managing to get behind the Aber defence, while at the other end Town were still creating chances which included an outstanding last-ditch challenge to deny Pippa Richards a clear-chance on goal. With six minutes remaining Caldicot broke the deadlock through Rianne Jones, who unleashed a fantastic first time strike beating Ffion Ashman before hitting the back of the net. The Black and Greens were unable to find a reply and were eliminated from the competition. Despite this defeat Aber will still be determined to end the season well and secure the double. Their league campaign will continue on Sunday 7th March as they travel back to Caldicot in the hope of picking up a huge three points. Four games, three wins and eight goals scored and once again time to vote for your favourite Goal of the Month. This time the three possible winners have been chosen by Everton and Wales forward, Elise Hughes. (All the goals are available to view below. After coming through their Regional Talent Centre, Elise made her senior Everton debut against Arsenal in February 2018 and later that year made her international debut for Wales in the 2018 Cyprus Cup against Switzerland. Hughes' first professional goal for the WSL side came against Merseyside rivals Liverpool in a cup game aged just 17! The Everton youngster has watched all eight Aber Town Ladies goals that were scored in March and here are the three goals the Wales International has chosen as well as her reasons why:
