Welsh Women's League Cup Semi-Final
Sunday 31st March 2019 Caldicot Town Ladies 1 (R Jones 84') Aberystwyth Town Ladies 0 Aber Town Ladies' hopes of winning a treble came to a disappointing end at the hands of Caldicot Town Ladies when a late winner from Rianne Jones secured a cup final spot for the hosts, writes Steven Brookes. Aber travelled to South Wales with a very depleted squad but despite this the Black and Greens were arguably the more dangerous side in the first half. Ffiona Evans came closest for the visitors but the Aber captain was unable to get onto the end of a fantastic Tania Wylde cross. Caldicot Town Ladies' last match was a convincing 6-2 victory against Aber's title rivals Barry Town United and the team in blue looked a lot more threatening in the second half. Rianne Jones came close for the hosts when firing wide after managing to get behind the Aber defence, while at the other end Town were still creating chances which included an outstanding last-ditch challenge to deny Pippa Richards a clear-chance on goal. With six minutes remaining Caldicot broke the deadlock through Rianne Jones, who unleashed a fantastic first time strike beating Ffion Ashman before hitting the back of the net. The Black and Greens were unable to find a reply and were eliminated from the competition. Despite this defeat Aber will still be determined to end the season well and secure the double. Their league campaign will continue on Sunday 7th March as they travel back to Caldicot in the hope of picking up a huge three points. Comments are closed.
